After a long break of about three months, the thunder of thoroughbreds returns to the Kolkata track at the Royal Calcutta Turf Club on Tuesday. The 18-day Calcutta Monsoon  meeting has a total of 126 scheduled races, of which 25 are Cup events.  The meeting is slated to conclude on October 13 with the running of the Monsoon Cup.

The advertised stake money for the meet including the value of cups and trophies, is about Rs 5.68 crore, which is about one crore less than last year. As many as  442 thoroughbreds (which includes 95 two-year-olds)  under the charge of 22 ‘A’ licensed trainers are stationed here. Six ‘B’ licenses have also been issued thus far.  Of the eight apprentices, Nikhil Naidu and RS Bhati are the duo whose mounts spell danger. Regular showers over the past couple of weeks have left the monsoon track well watered and it should run true from day one.

The handicapper has dropped the scale by 3kg (barring three-year-olds) and this should aid the winners of last winter to have a toe in it against upcoming youngsters in the early part of the rainy season. Other than champion trainer Vijay Singh, trainers Arti Doctor, Bharath Singh, Javed Khan, Bath, Vikash Jaiswal and Raunak Banerji may be the saddlers to follow this monsoon. The Monsoon Derby is scheduled to be run on September 30.
