Trainer S Padmanabhan leading Big Sur (A Sandesh Up), winner of The Tippu Sultan Cup

Padmanabhan-trained Big Sur delighted the followers of form with his gutsy effort in the Tippu Sultan Cup run over a mile. The top fancy gallantly snuffed out the challenge of arch rival Capricious who was bidding for the fourth straight win.

Big Sur, who started his career in Mumbai had impressed most in the morning trials. On the strength of his showing on the trial track he garnered the maximum support despite the fact that he was pitted against the in-form Capricious who had not tasted defeat. St Pauli Girl led the field into the straight but after promising much flattered to deceive before holding on to take the third spot ahead of Royal Sceptre.

Nithyanand schooled New Moon who was a medium of a good gamble, backed down from (5\1) to 2/1 won the principal added attraction, the B Mohan Das Baliga Memorial Trophy in emphatic fashion. Before the start the race looked open, New Moon, favourite Psychic Force and Cerise Noir, all having their fair share of supporters. However, New Moon with Arshad Alam to guide his fortunes proved too good. Psychic Force finished second ahead of Cerise Noir who lacked the experience and will benefit most after this fighting essay.

Prasanna Kumar-trained Gerontocrat surprised most in the Snow Dew Plate for Juveniles. After the fancied Winning Heart looked set to enter the winners’ circle at the distance post. Gerontocrat stormed into contention and edged out  Winning Heart close home. The fancied Invader came home third.

Prithviraj- trained Andhra King who was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the Galilee Plate justified the confidence of his supporters in style. The three-year-old who was taking on jaded older horses looked a winner the moment  Sai Kiran reminded him of the task ahead. Prazsky finished second ahead of Odyssey.

Concept Win from Arjun Manglorkar’s yard came up trumps in the upper division of the Royal Tern Plate. Concept Win had the first run on her opponents and the fancied runner kicked on merrily and easily held off the late-rallying favourite Dazzling Beauty who had to rest  content  with the runner-up berth despite breaking level from the gates. Hidayat Khan-trained Zala Princess won the lower division of the race at lucrative odds. After tracking Bold Runner into the straight, Zala Princess was pushed to take over the running by apprentice jockey Darshan. Zala Princess broke clear and had no problem comfortably finishing ahead of late-finishing As Good As It Gets and Girl With Pearl. Favourite Shamsadas Girl from Darius Byramji’s yard who was strongly fancied flopped badly and finished a poor fourth.

The lesser fancied White Snowdrops from the stables of Samar Singh, produced a good gallop in the hands of apprentice jockey Nazerul Alam and got the better of front-running favourite Arya Stark in the final stages of the race to clinch the Amazing Grace Plate. Arya Stark shaped to win as the favourite had established a winning lead in the final furlong, but she tired out in the final furlong and this helped White Snowdrops gallop home to the delight of Samar.  Santa Fe saved place money.
