FANCIED CONTESTANTS FAIL TO DISPLAY TRUE POTENTIAL

Trainer M Bobby leading Korol (K Sai Kiran Up), winner of The M K Srinivas Memorial Trophy

Not every day you get to see four winners making every post a winning one in the first four races. This happened at the Mysore races on Wednesday and considering the fact that none of the four were favourites, the punters were all cleaned out before the two favourites Korol and Chandini came through in the next two events. And when Wild Wild Angels `nosed’ out the public rage Optimistic Approach in the final event, railbirds hit hard by the shock results returned home with a big hole in the pocket.

The Azhar Ali-trained She’s Stylish garnered the maximum support in the opening event, the lower division of the Autumn Blue Plate run over a sprint. The public choice found the lesser fancied Desert Gold from trainer M R Singh’s yard too hot to handle, the moment the winner streaked ahead and held on gamely to thwart the belated effort of the favourite. Miss Bolt who had her fair share of supporters finished third ahead of Santa Fe who raced in patches.

Next in the lower division of the Belur Plate, Kerazano from trainer Padmanabhan’s yard made every post a winning one in the hands of Neeraj Rawal fresh from his Derby success in Kolkata. The second in demand at the betting ring looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring and he readily justified the confidence of his yard proving too good at the end. The seven to one shot Triggar gained the runner-up berth ahead of the Mysore hopeful Towering Star, while the favourite Kashkha from Sulaiman Attaollahi’s yard piloted by leading pro Trevor Patel plodded home fourth. Kaashkha, it appears needs time and space before he gains the desired maturity to make his presence felt against decent rivals.

After the lower division of the Autumn Blue Plate was claimed by the six to one shot Desert Gold, another winner from M R Singh’s yard Ramon dropped the biggest bombshell in the upper division, edging out the favourite Brave Admiral much to the chagrin of the followers of form. The 20 to one outsider piloted by Sai Kiran hit the front after the field of 11 runners came under the starter’s flag and never let the initiative slip despite coming under pressure and shifting out a trifle at the end. Three Wishes finished third ahead of another strongly fancied contestant Touch Your Destiny saddled by Sirajuddin.

In the K Thammanna Gowda Memorial Cup, Ganapathy-trained Turf Hawk piloted by Imran Khan was fancied most along with Louisiana from Faraz Arshad’s yard. Both the top two fancies bit the dust, Nirmal Jodha winning from the word go on the eight to one shot Star Atrium from Bipin Salvi’s yard. The winner, who won a thriller from Louisiana and Turf Magic is in good form and is set to provide an encore if his connections place him right again next time out. Nazerul Alam astride Louisiana failed to time his final challenge to a nicety and this cost the followers of the four-year-old dear, losing out a race he should have won.

The Bobby-trained Korol was expected to have it easy in the M K Srinivas Memorial Trophy and it panned out that way, the public choice making it a no contest after storming through to assume command at the distance post. The winner is in great heart and it will pay to follow this Bobby ward who has touched peak form this season. Another in-form runner El Tycoon finished a game second ahead of Oceanic Storm who did well to save place money after attempting to make every post a winning one.

The two stablemates Kaguya Himei and Chandini from Rakesh’s yard opened joint favourites in the J Tyrrell Memorial Plate before the insiders and the right connections chose to go with Chandini piloted by Umesh and to their delight the favourite romped home in resplendent style. Kaguya Himei after making all the running in the mile long trip held on to take the second spot ahead of Kir Royale while Counter Point came home fourth.

Many considered the Gregory sandhu schooled Optimistic Approach a `moral bet’ in the final event, the upper division of the Belur Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. But the even-money favourite after failing to gain a favourable position at the top of the straight unleashed a good gallop only to lose out by the shortest of margins at end. Rankoutsider Wild Wild Angels from trainer Dheeraj’s yard partnered by Surya won the event resulting in most followers of form returning home after tearing the book of form inside out.
