LA MAGNIFIQUE WINS KAILASHPATH SINGHANIA TROPHY

By Mahendra Mallya | 13 Dec 2018 | MUMBAI

Mr S M Ruia, Mr Berjis Minoo Desai leading La Magnifique (Neeraj Rawal Up), winner of The Kailashpat Singhania Trophy

La Magnifique (Shamardal – Ajaweed, Equus Stud) smartly ridden by jockey Neeraj Rawal, outfoxed her rivals with a quick rails run to win in a close battle and clinch the Kailashpath Singhania Trophy in an exciting finish.
Odessa darted to the front with favourite Iron Age in second, La Magnifique made her way to the inner railings while the others followed close behind.

Into the straight, they all bunched up together with Iron Age wresting the issue from Odessa and La Magnifique, not waiting for a second invitation moved along the rails the moment she saw the gap and quickened aptly to emerge through and tackle Iron Age. Not far behind, Gazino started to inch closer to the action with Angels Touch breathing fire and Excellent Gold trying hard to remain in contention. La Magnifique sustained her gallop and the Altamash Ahmed trainee kept it going to hold on well from the fast finishing Gazino. Angels Touch ended a good third while Excellent Gold ran on to beat Iron Age for a spot in the frame.

Vintage (Phoenix Tower – Krasnaya, Manjri Stud) was an interesting prospect as he became the shortest priced runner on the in only his first outing. Not many debutantes have commanded that short a price and most were keen to see his paddock looks. He looked fit for the fray and boy did he justify the cramped odds!

Vintage settled beautifully as he stayed behind Chezza and Lambretta all the way until into the straight. Jockey Zervan urged the Pesi Shroff trained gelding and he responded with a big gallop the moment he was asked to speed up. Vintage accelerated fluently and within a matter of strides was galloping away from the rest. Western Front had too much to cover in the final furlong, however, he did finish on well to take the second spot well ahead of Lambretta.

Shroff struck again in the very next race with Barack (Multidimensional – Fond Fantasy, Usha Stud) who did extremely well considering her had given the Pune season a miss and was racing after a longish gap. Barack, with the high-flying jockey Leigh Roche in the saddle, settled nicely in the mid-bunch along the rails as Silver Edge led them into the straight, with Perpetual Winning, the on-money favourite ready to take charge.

Tar Heel (Varenar – Charlotte Point, Equus Stud) found his winning touch with a well-timed run that got the better of the small field of six runners. Tar Heel, ridden by Robbie Dawney, was in third, but about ten lengths behind leader Cavarozzi and Baby Face who was in faraway second, progressed nice around the turn to be in box seat for the final run. Cavarozzi led them into the straight, but was tiring. Star Aligned moved along the rails, but faded out just as quickly.  Tar Heel produced a good gallop approaching the 300 m mark and soon got past those in front to lead them into the final furlong. Brazos put in some resistance, but never looked like dislodging Tar Heel from the lead. Tar Heel did lurk inwards forcing Brazos to switch lanes, but the Imtiaz Sait ward was easily finishing on better of the two. Tar Heel notched up his second career win; he had last won in February over 1600m. Brazos was a deserving second as none of the others truly stayed the distance.

Perpetual Winning grabbed the lead soon on turning for home, but had Barack closing in on him and coming at a good clip. Perpetual Winning was fighting a losing battle as Barack simply shot past him and sailed away finishing on a lot better than the hot favourite. Barack won with a good measure of comfort and he is bound to improve further which would enhance his chances for an encore. Perpetual Winning went down tamely and will either need to up his game or seek a slightly weaker field. Rogue One kicked on gamely to finish in the money.

Bonafide (Excellent Art – Bolt, Poonawalla stud) galloped to her maiden win with a neat start to finish essay. The bay filly, trained by young Deepesh Narredu and ridden by his younger brother Yash, took a good jump and galloped at a good clip to lead them homewards. Once into the straight, Bonafide stepped up momentum and was always a head by over a length and Good Thing who was nearest behind failed to quicken and make a race of it. Bee Quirky tried hard too but could not produce anything worthwhile. Bonafide won unchallenged, while favourite Night Watch arrived when all was over only to land the runner up berth. Good Thing saved the place money.

Bluebell (Paco Boy – Well Hidden, Nanoli Stud) another one who was appearing on the race track after a layoff, showed out while scoring a comprehensive maiden victory in the last race of he day. Jockey Leigh Roche had the Vishal Gaikwad ward in a handy third until the turn. Double Down had led them into the straight and faded away. Savage Garden who chased the leader all the way, could not find anything and squandered a good chance to make an impact. However, Bluebell warmed up nicely to take charge at about 300 and stretched out fluently to draw away from them all and pile up a huge lead notching up an impressive victory with a big margin. Retained Asset ran on to take the second spot a length ahead of Gold Medalist.

For the professionals, trainer Pesi Shroff and jockey Leigh Roche scored a double each.
