WARRIOR SUPREME BATTLES HARD TO WIN FALAKNUMA CUP

By Mahendra Mallya | 19 Dec 2018 | HYDERABAD

Trainer D Netto leading Warrior Supreme (R Ajay Kumar Up), winner of The Falaknuma Cup

Warrior Supreme (Diffident – Encouragement) fought true to his name and wore down Sweetie pie first and then battled on to ward off the late challenge from Celtic Queen to carve out a narrow win to claim the Falaknuma Cup.

Sitting well up behind leader Sweetie Pie with Digger in second, Warrior Supreme made quick progress to be on the tail of Sweetie Pie as they straightened up for home. Sweetie Pie kicked away in the straight, however, D Netto trained Warrior Supreme, with jockey Ajay Kumar in the saddle, started to chase her down. Sweetie Pie, to her credit, gave a tough fight but was overpowered by Warrior Supreme in the final furlong. Celtic Queen warmed up too past the distance post and made a late dash. However, Warrior Supreme galloped on gamely to hold on by a neck. Celtic Queen had to be content with the second spot. Sweetie Pie saved the place money, while Sea Castle did well to finish a close fourth considering he was detached last entering the homestretch.

RH Sequeira’s ward Long Range (Surfrider – Outtostealthescene) put in a fine effort to win the other Cup race of the day, beating the field comfortably to bag the Sikander-E-Azam Cup. Long Range was, well, within range from the start as he settled close behind the early leader Amazing Script until into the straight. Jockey Koushik did not linger around too long and surged ahead with Long Range soon on turning for home. Long Range galloped resolutely to skip away approaching the distance post, but there were Dunkirk and Shiloh who were gearing up well too. Dunkirk moved up under whip but Long Range was again, out of range by then, and Dunkirk ran on to finish second - a clear length behind Long Range. Shiloh ended a ‘head’ behind Dunkirk, while Nayadeep improved positions and did well to finish fourth, only half length behind Shiloh.

Sequeira had a race earlier saddled Trump Girl, the first of his two winners on the day. Trump Girl (Pinson – Premier Perception) stamped her superiority making it a no-contest as early as in the first half of the homestretch. Crimson Fire had stolen a march coming into the straight, but it came to a naught as Trump Girl zipped past him with ease and then stretched out fluently all the way to the winning post. Trump Girl triumphed without really having to fire on all cylinders. Yet managed to pile up almost six lengths on Crimson Fire and also clocking a decent time. Yogastha was a faraway third.

Trainer M Satyanarayana’s ward Desert Moon (Rebuttal – Moonlit Mistress) provided an armchair ride to victory to jockey Kuldeep Singh. Although he had shown poor results in his assignments last season, Desert Moon was backed with confidence and was installed the favourite, possibly because he was down a class and confronting a weak looking set of opponents. Even the fact that he was carrying the top weight did not deter his backers one bit.

Desert Moon amply justified that faith. He seemed in no hurry as he fell back after leading briefly at the early stages. Reach the Heights took over from Platinum Claasz and led them into the straight with Desert Moon dropping back to fifth until then. Reach The Heights kicked on hoping for the best; Platinum Claasz too was looking hopeful as he drew closer to the leader, but soon Desert Moon arrived and shut out all those hopes.

Desert Moon, with Kuldeep Singh in the saddle, galloped strongly to dismiss the duo in front with disdain and then marched on ahead to outpace them all and post a fine victory with a healthy margin of just under six lengths. Reach the Heights ran on to finish second keeping Platinum Claasz at bay.

Satyanarayana picked up the last race of the day with the shortest priced runner on the day – Vega Cassandra (Gaswar – My Fantasy). The half-money favourite did cause anxiety to her supporters and she was taking a while finding her rhythm and unleashed a powerful burst well inside the final furlong.

Bombastic led them into the straight with Loch Stella looking good on the outside; jockey G Naresh astride Vega Cassandra made a smart move to move to the inside rails, fortunately finding a clear passage. Loch Stella, Smarty, Bombastic and Royal Style were close together, scrambling towards the distance post. Loch Stella had a slight advantage over Vega Cassandra as they went for the wire, but in the last few strides, Vega Cassandra came to grips and darted ahead to brush off the good effort of Loch Stella. Vega Cassandra won by half a length from Loch Stella with Royal Style grabbing the third spot.

Midnight Dream (Midnight Interlude – Cordoba) from the stables of L D’Silva, came from a long way back to score a sensational victory producing a terrific burst of speed in the final furlong. He was detached from the front bunch by a good margin and one would not been blamed if one were to write him off at the turn, particularly since Versallies and the prime favourite Exclusive Blue were well into the straight even as Midnight Dream was still taking the turn.

Versallies led them into the straight and galloped on and had Exclusive Blue trying hard to get closer. While the others were not matching up to the contest, Midnight Dream, with jockey Ajit Singh firmly confident, started to work his way into the thick of things. They were noticed only in the last 100 meters as Midnight Dream started closing in on Versallies and Exclusive Blue, with Sporting Smile also putting in a good effort. Midnight Dream swooped down on the trio and pegged them all back to wrest the initiative just in time to carve out a neck verdict in his favour. Versallies was unfortunate to have encountered this somewhat freakish last minute shock which cruelly snatched away the race which she should have won. Exclusive Blue and Sporting Smile should improve with the benefit of this hard run race.

Long-shot Aarohi (Stern Opinion – Charlwood) pulled off an upset to secure her maiden victory after seventeen previous failures. She had given a hint though in her last start fourth place finish, however, there were few takers to back her for win and was freely available in the double digits.

Aarohi was a bit tardy at the start too and was never prominent until it mattered. Meanwhile, Red Bullet was well in front coming into the straight with Southern Meteor and Moka in hot pursuit. When Moka joined Red Bullet approaching the distance post, Aarohi was just beginning to warm up. Jockey Ajit Singh, showed a never-say-die attitude and got Aarohi going. With a 100 to go, Moka was still being hailed as the winner, when Aarohi arrived with a dazzling finish to spoil the party for Moka on the final stride with a blinding finish. Aarohi pulled it off with a magnificent effort in the dying moments of the race and looked good to add to her solitary win soon. Moka was unlucky to see all his hard work go in vain, so close to the wire. Southern Meteor ran on to save place money.

For the professionals, trainers Satyanarayana and RH Sequeira saddled a double each, while jockeys Ajit Singh and Koushik scored a double apiece as well.
