BLUEBELL WINS GOLCONDA OAKS (GR2) WITH EASE

By Mahendra Mallya | 07 Jan 2019 | HYDERABAD

Trainer Vishal Gaikwad leading Bluebell (Leigh Roche Up), winner of The Golconda Oaks (Gr.2)

Western India raider Bluebell (Paco Boy – Well Hidden, Nanoli Stud) owned by the Shirke-Dhunjibhoy combine, blew away the small field while annexing the Golconda Oaks (Gr2) at Hyderabad. Jockey Leigh Roche judged the pace to perfection and timed his run to a nicety, leaving the chief rival Nimble Mind far behind in what was expected to be a close fight between the two.

Once More darted to the front to set a decent pace for the 2400m journey with Miss Lily in second; Bluebell settled early in third while Nimble Mind raced off the pace at the rear end of the field of four.

They raced in the same order right until into the straight. Once More ran out of steam and soon fell apart. Miss Lily too struggled and caved in the moment Bluebell came alongside. Leigh Roche relied on his hands and heels as Blue Bell stormed ahead to take charge midway up the straight and galloped majestically, leaping towards the winning post at a good clip. Nimble Mind gave her best in trying to make a fight of it, but it was just not enough to even get close to the Vishal Gaikwad ward. Bluebell was toying with Nimble Mind and sealed her victory long way from home with a lot left in the tank. Considering this was only her third career start, Bluebell showcased exception staying prowess and with temperament to match. She clocked a decent timing of 2:34:49 while sparing two and half lengths to Nimble Mind at the wire. Nimble Mind, though, was not disgraced in defeat as she fought hard and lost to a better filly on the day.

Dance Oh Dance (Lord Admiral – Dance N Celebrate) won the T Chandrashekhar Reddy Memorial Cup with a determined run lasting all through the long homestretch.  Jockey SS Tanwar was quick to settled down just behind the leader as Paprika darted to the front soon on start.

Entering the straight, Dance Oh Dance strode out well and got past the leader with ease. The Laxman Singh trainee had his work cut out as the others were rallying behind him, with That’s My Class making rapid progress among others. Jockey Tanwar was focused to the task and rode out Dance Oh Dance relentlessly even as That’s My Class was getting closer with every stride. Dance Oh Dance sustained the momentum well and managed to ward off That’s My Class and stay ahead to score by half a length. Leading Legend did well to improve in the final furlong and save place money, while Meritocracy ended a good fourth.

La Mer (Green Coast – Supreme Discovery) made ample amends for her last start loss and proved a point in the higher class with a superlative effort, flourishing under the astute handling of current sensation Akshay Kumar. La Mer got off to an electric start dashed into the lead in a flash. Rapid Fire worked his way up steadily to join La Mer and they stuck together as they turned for home.

La Mer and Rapid fire were going for each other matching strides and had pulled ahead of the rest. Shiloh was about two lengths adrift. La Mer and Rapid Fire however, continued the battle into the final furlong, both giving it their best shot. La Mer produced that extra bit in the last few strides and drew away from Rapid Fire to assert herself in the final moments, winning the Bonzer Trophy with a length to spare. Blue Empress made steady progress to earn the place stakes.

Tetra Rama (Mount Nelson – La Surama) made a stylish debut winning the upper division of the Trade Fair Plate. The Laxman Singh trainee looked fit and well and took a good jump and swung into the lead straight away. Once into the straight, Tetra Rama, ridden by Akshay Kumar, quickened well and stretched out fluently. In the final furlong, Tetra Rama increased the lead and with closest rival Monte Rei found wanting, there was no threat lurking around. Tetra Rama was well in front and was eased up past the post. Magnetosphere and Royal Ruby both managed to speed past Monte Rei, the tote favourite not living up to expectations and disappointed his large number of supporters for the second time.
The lower division of the race saw an amazing rally where Sporting Smile surrendered the lead to the short-priced favourite Yours Forever and then re-ran to finish with a flourish that shocked the favourite as much as it confounded those in the stands.

Sporting Smile (Net Whizz – Darayka), trained by K Sateesh, led the field into the straight with Yours Forever close behind. The latter drew closer approaching the distance post and soon surged past to establish what looked like a decisive lead. Just as the crowd began cheering and hailing the popular favourite, jockey Nakhat Singh, with a never-say-die attitude, got Sporting Smile to pick up speed again and shot past Yours Forever to wrest back the initiative and pull off a sensation victory on the post. Yours Forever was caught unawares and will rue the lost opportunity, but will live to fight another day. Ice Warrior caught the eye too as he finished on well to finish a neck behind, arriving with a good final blaze.

D Netto trained Holy Healer (Tazahum – Alexandra) was the highest priced winner on the day. Holy Healer was never prominent until into the final furlong. Man Apart and Palsy Walsy were out in front with favourite Kamyar along with them. Entering the straight, Kamyar surged into the lead and was shaping well. Palsy Walsy was ridden all out to stay in contention. It was in the final 100 meters or thereabouts that Holy Healer produced a good burst of speed and came crashing down on the front-runners. Apprentice jockey RS Jodha arrived with gale force to zip past the pair in front and land the spoils in the nick of time. Palsy Walsy rallied on to pip Kamyar for the runner-up berth.

One One One (Abbeyside – Missoni) from the stables of RH Sequeira, covered a lot of ground in the homestretch and showed tremendous acceleration at the finish to thrill her supporters at the business end. She was a good ten lengths in deficit as they turned in for home. Shakesphere had a good lead over Baywatch Babe, but he weakened and fell back. Baywatch Babe looked good once she took charge. She was going all out towards the winning post when One One One, with Koushik in the saddle came hurtling down and simply trounced Baywatch Babe in the final stages to win handsomely by a healthy margin. Baywatch bay looked good until beaten in the last couple of strides. Latest News ended a tame third.

Royal Style (Tazahum – Nasheela) trained by N Ravindra Singh and ridden by jockey Uday Kiran, held on grimly to win the concluding race of the day. The 10 to 1 shot progressed well in the straight to collar Vallee Ikon in the straight and surged ahead to work up a handy lead. Silver Dollar tried hard, but failed to quicken. Nazariya wasted crucial time to get going and had to switch lanes too before she unleashed a good burst. However, she had given too much leeway and although she was fastest of the lot in the final 100m, there was never enough ground for Nazariya to get past Royal Style. The winning post arrived well in time for Royal Style to notch up his maiden win on his ninth start. Nazariya ended a close second. Dhool Ka Phool improved to finish a length behind to save place money.

For the professionals, trainer Laxman Singh and jockey Akshay Kumar scored a double each.
