TURNING POINT POCKETS EBDO LIVSMART MILLION

By Mahendra Mallya | 02 Feb 2019 | MUMBAI

Trianer S K Sunderji leading urning Point (P Trevor Up), winner of The Ebco Livsmart Million

SK Sunderji trained Turning Point (Surf Rider – Avec Plaisir, Ruia Stud) completely turned around the order of running, coming from the rear and detached at that, two lengths behind the bunch at the turn and finishing on like a dream to win the Ebdo Livsmart Million, the feature event of the day. One would have been forgiven to strike Turning Point out of it, if one was given a chance to spot the winner with two furlongs to go! Turning Point produced a sensation rally to time his run to a nicety and spoil the party for the better fancied Brainstorm, who had done nothing wrong until the last stride.

The eight-horse field was fairly closely huddled with Pure Zinc and Angels Touch at the helm and the rest close behind, only Turning Point was at the tail end of the field until they turned into the straight.

Brainstorm made the early run to tackle the front running pair and went into the lead. Excellent slipped in through the rails, while La Rondine was not making much ground. Even Excellent Gold got past La Rondine and it was curtains for her there and then. At the distance post, Brainstorm looked firmly on his way with Excellent trying hard to tag alongside Brainstorm. Just as these two were going all out at one another, Turning Point, with jockey P Trevor in the saddle, arrived with a scorching gallop to floor the fighting duo with a terrific burst of speed. Turning Point, at 12 to 1, shocked the fancied lot and pulled off a remarkable victory that would have left even the rails birds stunned!

Imtiaz Sait’s Flying Visit (China Visit – Ooh Aah Camera, Usha Stud) showed tremendous fighting qualities and refused to give up even when he surrendered the lead for a brief while. Going for it start to finish, Flying Visit galloped at a moderate pace and had Snowden right by his tail until into the straight. Snowden drew level with about 400m to go and even surged ahead to take charge. Flying Visit tagged along on the inside and clawed his way back, picking up momentum to recover quickly. Truly Epic and Kingsman were catching up as well but Flying Visit fought them all off gritty to score in a close finish.

Oui Sauvage (Sedgefield – Kanthara, Jai Govind Stud) and Storm Breaker stuck together from the start and remained so until past the wire. The battle raged on as they entered the straight, eyeball to eyeball, matching stride for stride and two top jockeys Sandesh and Suraj Narredu were in their elements. The bob of the heads was going to settle the issues and that’s the way it culminated in a nail-biting finish for the Dr MAM Ramaswamy Juvenile Sprint. To add to the thriller Enid Blyton arrived with a scintillating burst of speed, surfacing from the rear to finish the fastest of them all. However, she was a tad too late on the scene and that cost her dearly but nonetheless, Enid Blyton caught the eye and should make amends in her next. Up ahead, Oui Sauvage just managed to pip Storm Breaker in the nick of time to leave the racing patrons thrilled to bits and forget their own tote investments and stand up to applaud a well-fought-finish that’s horseracing is all about.

Shroff trained Momentum (Mull of Kintyre – Cockayne, Sohna Stud) picked up his maiden victory with a fluent run over the Derby trip (2400m) living up to the expectations he had raised in his last run. Settling comfortably behind leader Rospomare right until into the straight, Momentum soon flexed his muscles as he drew level and surged past Rospomare. Brazos was also putting up a good gallop as they dashed past the 400m mark. However, Momentum galloped on gamely and left the others to fight for the minor placing while winning the Thumbelina Millon with ease. Jockey Akshay had little trouble in the second half of the homestretch and Momentum won easing up. Brazos got the better of Rospomare, but only just to knock the runner-up berth.

El Comandante (Excellent Art – Yomalo, Viloo’s Greenfield Farm) scored a facile win to clinch the Amazing Mauritius Cup and jockey A Sandesh had an easy ride here. He was way back in the mid-pack as Faldo led them into the straight with Red Carnation breathing down his neck. Steppenwolf was struggling to catch up as was Night Hunt. El Comandante worked up nice speed and when Sandesh got him going, the Altaf Hussain trainee responded with telling strides and soon caught up with the front runners and sailed away in a trice. There was no threat brewing whatsoever, as El Comandante stretched away leaving them far behind. Run Forest Run improved well to finish second, while Red Carnation did well to finish in the money.

Gold Medalist (Dean’s Kitten – Mamborina, Sohna Stud) achieved his maiden success on his eleventh start getting the better of Rouge One. Grand Chieftain led them into the straight and soon Rouge One took over. Gold Medalist started to make good progress and joined Rouge One with about 300m to go. Rouge One offered a fight but not for long. Gold Medalist in the hands of jockey P Trevor finished on strongly to leave Rouge One behind and pick up the Kingfisher Max Mile in style.

Debutante Tasch (Phoenix Tower – Karakorum Splendour, Manjri Stud) scored a sensational victory and her effort was even more commendable as she was making her debut. The Faisal Abbas ward was strongly fancied on the strength of her steady preparation and was second in demand after Unimaginable. She was way too far behind and considering it was a five-furlong scurry it looked as though she had lost the plot early in the race.

Unimaginable on the other hand,  looked solid as entered the straight with a sizable lead. Furiosa was gathering momentum but with 300m to go, unimaginable still looked on course. However, Unimaginable looked vulnerable when Furiosa started to catch up rapidly with the winning post fast approaching. Jockey S Zervan came through gaps and switched to the inner rails and slipped through and Tasch produced a terrific burst of speed to shock the opposition to nail them close home. Furiosa held on to the second spot from the fast finishing She’s a Spy, who ended a good third. Unimaginable was overwhelmed and ended a close fourth.

For the professionals, trainer SK Sunderji saddled a double, while jockeys P Trevor, A Sandesh and S Zervan scored a double each.
