MASTER OF UNIVERSE SPRINGS A SURPRISE

By Mahendra Mallya | 15 Feb 2019 | MUMBAI

Trainer Vinesh leading (for deputizing trainer Bipin V Salvi) Master of Universe (T S Jodha Up), winner of The Sir Charles Forbes Trophy

The faith that the trainer from down south, Bipin Salvi, showed in his ward Master of Universe (Dancing Forever - Yamuna, Hazara Stud) was completely justified as the friendless contender galloped resolutely to win a good until convincingly. This was Salvi's first success on the Mahalaxmi turf and provided him a moment to savor. Salvi however, missed out on leading-in Master of Universe and local trainer Vinesh stood in for Salvi.

Excellent Gold's take-jump-hit-front tactic, despite giving chunks of weight to his rivals, seemed a ploy to bring in the surprise element. However, he  himself ended up being surprised in not finding a place in the top three as was largely expected. Excellent Gold led them into the straight with Gazino in close second; Pure Zinc, who was quick at the start, rushed in with his bid and was gaining on the pair in front. Jockey Nirmal Jodha alerted Master of Universe past the 400 and the 'master started to pick up speed at a good clip. Excellent Gold slackened as Gazino and Pure Zinc got past him without difficulty and just as these two were fighting for supremacy, Master of Universe arrived with a scintillating burst to surge past and score an emphatic victory with a length to spare. Pure Zinc looked good while beating Gazino for the runner-up berth.

Sanjay Kolse trained Sagittarius (Arazan - Glorious Breaker, Villoo's Greenfield Farm) galloped on from the word go and pulled off a neat start to finish victory over the 2400m trip, the opening race of the day, Jockey A Sandesh set his own pace and led them all the way into the straight. Lucky Luciano showed a bit of spunk as he drew closer with less than two furlongs to go. Gdansk made his move from the outside, while Sussex Pride was ridden out hard along the inner rails. None of them made much impact on Sagittarius as the bay gelding rolled on to keep the rest at bay, Gandsk covered good ground in the final 50 meters to peg back Lucky Luciano for the second slot, ending only half a length behind the winner.

Western Front - (Strong Suit - Koh Samui, Manjri Stud) provided an encore with an even better performance. Jockey S Zervan had the Dallas Todywalla ward settle nicely in the fourth spot, not too far away from the front runners. Rouge One led them into the straight, with I am the Way in second and Primum Non Nocere close behind, On turning for home, Western Front quickened well and pounced on Rouge One knocking down the other two along the way, Excellent Sorrento and Kimberella moved up from the outside. However, Western Front by then, had built a handy lead and was speeding towards the winning post, shaping well in the final furlong to kick on and win by close to two lengths eventually. Kimberella did well to edge out Rouge One for the runner-up slot. Excellent Sorrento ran a good fourth and should benefit from this run.

Silver Flames (Leitir Mor - First and Only One, Villoo's Greenfield Farm) had an ominous start and he lagged behind in the early part of the race, but then recovered brilliantly to make a sensational rally towards the all important end to shock the field and make his debut memorable.

As mentioned above, it was not all smooth sailing for the Altaf Hussain ward as Silver Flames was a tad slowly off and raced alongside Hats Off an the rear. Gallant Star darted into the lead and had Powerful Star on his heels, with Black Cherry settling in third, with tote favourite Track Star close behind. Gallant Star had a good lead coming into the straight but could not sustain the advantage despite enjoying a handy lead past the distance post. Powerful Star faded out as did Black Cherry. Warrior Clan made good progress and closed in quickly to surge past Gallant Star. Track Star had a good chance and a clear passage ahead, but failed to quicken and deliver a final flourish. Silver Flames, with jockey Akshay Gaikwad in the saddle, who was improving all the while, didn't look that sharp as he was running green and hanging inwards as well. Jockey Akshay Gaikwad did a wonderful job in ensuring that his mount did not slip up and gathered the gelding and started to get him going inside the final furlong. Silver Flames responded with a crisp burst of speed and overwhelmed Warrior Clan with a late dash to pick up the Purple Lifestyle trophy in a dramatic manner. Warrior Clan ran a good second, while Track Star saved the blushes ending a close third. Celestia had an educative outing while finishing in the frame.

Rehanullah Khan trained Highland Empress (Excellent Art - Meohmy, Villoo's Greenfield Farm) picked up her second victory with a sustained effort in the latter half of the straight. Fire Flame led them into the straight and soon gave way to Bonafide who led briefly. Highland Empress shifted gears and made a serious bid for the lead approaching the distance post. Lord Commander too stuck close by and was gearing up for a battle. Highland Empress held the upper hand and Lord Commander was probably feeling the weight as he was not able to muster well enough. Chosen One was the one who arrived with a big gallop late in the day and while he trounced the rest, the timing of his run proved to be too late to collar the winner. Chosen One certainly squandered an opportunity that could have given him a much needed maiden victory. He fell short by a neck and found one better yet again, in fact for the fifth time in his twelve-run career and that could be frustrating indeed.

Poco Azul (Mull of Kintyre - Kalimanka, Sohna Stud) was another one in the day to score an encore. The SN Joshi trainee had it easy this time as well as he readily collared the front running Ustad Pedro soon on turning for home. Poco Azul, with jockey Akshay in the saddle, cruised past Ustad Pedro and then accelerated well to storm further ahead without having to really fire on all cylinders. Akshay eased him into a fine rhythm and the momentum made him look far superior to the lot. He won easing up by a healthy margin and the ease with which he won this race should see him achieve another one next time out. Ustad Pedro held on gamely to finish runner up. Harmony of the Sea edged out Gentillesse for the place money.

Ms Nazak Chenoy's Pleiades (Dean's Kitten - Six Stars, Sohna Stud) was made to work hard to earn his maiden win and this was his sixth outing. Isinit led them into the straight and surged ahead to built a handy lead. Pleiades started to chase the older mare down but encountered a tough challenge. Pleiades had to work his way closer with jockey Ayyar toiling hard to cover the leeway. They inched closer with every stride, but Isinit was now showing any signs of slowing down. The pair battled stride for stride until Pleiades eventually wore Isinit down to win in the last couple of strides. Allegria ended third a good five-and-half lengths behind the top two.
