WAR HAMMER PROVES HIS METTLE

By Ikram Khan | 22 Feb 2019 | BANGALORE

Trainer Prasanna Kumar leading War Hammer (Y S Srinath Up), winner of The Bangalore Juvenile Million (Gr.3)

Form played true. Four firm favourites and two well supported public choices nailing bold colours to the mast in the nine-event card saw punters returning home satisfied, gaining a lot of purple and green currency at the end of the action on Friday.

Leading saddle artiste Y S Srinath bagged top honours among the professionals recording a double through the half-money favourite War Hammer and the second in demand at the betting ring, Piper Regina. The former proved too good in the Bangalore Juvenile Million, the plum event, donkey-licking his four rivals to register his second straight success while sending out a strong message that he has the required quality to test the best in the months ahead.

After his smashing debut win, War Hammer from Prasanna Kumar's yard was touted a `moral certainty' in the feature and he proved that right cantering past the opposition at the distance post and zooming to the finish line in effortless style. Srinath didn't really need to move a muscle on War Hammer. The leading pro just guided him all along the seven furlongs trip and the progeny of Air Support from the Kunigal Stud Farm did the rest without braking  sweat. War Hammer appears to be a classic prospect and is set to complete a hat-trick if his connections choose to field him again this winter. Star Appearance who did all the early running held on to gain the runner-up berth ahead of Kirkwood, while Star Cavalry, who was expected to run War Hammer close, disappointed his supporters finishing only ahead of Desert Rose.

Srinath later booted home Piper Regina from Parvati Byramji's yard in the upper division of the Haveri Plate. The winner streaked ahead in the final furlong and gamely held on to score from Brooklyn Supreme and Blue Jack. The favourite Reczai from Sharath Kumar's yard failed to make the frame. It is clear that all the favourites emerging from Sharath Kumar's yard are falling like pins in a bowling alley and it is time the stipes and stewards at this centre seek a fair explanation before the punters decide to take a call which could lead to a law and order problem. And if that happens it will further dent the image of the club which is striving hard to keep the show going on.

The principal added attraction, the Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar Memorial Trophy was claimed by Star Carnation from trainer Ganapathy's yard. The four to one shot, who had impressed most while finishing an impressive third in his last essay over a sprint which actually does not suit his style  produced his best in the seven furlongs trip to romp home a deserving winner in the hands of Imran Khan. After tracking the speedy Saint Petersburg for most part of the journey, Imran pushed Star Carnation ahead approaching the distance post and the Ganapathy ward powered through to score in convincing fashion. Fire Glow did well to `nose' out Sagrada for the runner-up berth while the public choice Saint Petersburg performed below par and eventually finished in the ruck.

Another Air Support progeny who brought the smile on the face of the URBB managing director Zeyn Mirza was Impavid.from trainer Arjun Manglorkar's yard. The good looking debutant competing in the Black Caviar Stakes displayed good turn of foot galloping home in resplendent style to make a smashing impression in his first start. Oh Pada who has improved most after his maiden essay finished second ahead of the top fancy Corona Del Corsa from Sulaiman Attaollahi's yard.

Sulaiman earlier led in Kashkha who justified the confidence of his supporters in the Gaganachukki Plate run over a distance of 2000 metres. The winner who had failed to live upto the expectations of his owners in his last two lackadaisical efforts after registering a win produced his best over a trip which he appeared to relish and this made the task of his pilot Trevor simple at end. Memoriter again finished second ahead of Ekalavya while Proudprince made the frame.

The Praveen Jesu-trained Duty Call was the favourite in the opening event, the lower division of the Flashing Star Plate run over a sprint. But the grey met a tartar in Bold Move from Irfan Ghatala's yard who had failed to display his true potential in his last essay. Island Perarl in her attempt to make every post a winning one ran home second ahead of Capstone while Duty Call had to rest content with the fourth spot.

Back after going down fighting to Tarini in her last essay, Call Me Maybe from Imtiaz Khan's yard entered the winners' circle coming up tops in the lower division of the Haveri Plate. T S Jodha produced a copybook effort on the winner while snuffing out the challenge of Amazonite in the final furlong. Ultimate Power did well to save place money finishing ahead of the moody Royal Rein.

Blue Blazer was the lone outsider in the nine-event card. The Kishan Thomas ward who was strongly fancied in place by his connections produced his best to earn a winning bracket pegging back Miniver Rose and Madame Sultana. The top two fancies in the event, Castaway from Dominic's yard and Venus Bay from the stables of Prasanna Kumar performed like duds and this surprised most old hats in the game who were of the opinion that the race was strictly between the two. But that is racing and that's how the cookie crumbles.
