MISSING YOU WINS POONAWALLA BREEDERS' MULTI-MILLION (GR1)

By Mahendra Mallya | 24 Feb 2019 | MUMBAI

Dr Cyrus S Poonawalla, Mr Adar C Poonawalla, Mrs Natasha A Poonawalla and trainer Dallas Todywalla leading Missing You (David Allan Up), winner of The Poonawalla Breeders' Multi-Million (Gr.1)

Dr Cyrus Poonawalla, who has given so much to Indian racing and Chaired the Asian Racing Conference as well, perhaps enjoyed one of his most memorable and joyful days at the Mahalaxmi racecourse, may I add... ever! Of course he has won every Classic and other big races a number of times. One might feel that racing is more of a hobby and relaxing option of the industrialist and popular philanthropist, but there are times that can choke even a Dr Cyrus emotionally and that is the beauty of life!

The success of his filly Missing You (Arazan - Change of Luck, Villoo's Greenfield Farm) struck deep in Dr Cyrus' heart and revealed his sentimental side and that does not happen too often. his choking voice and moist eyes moved everyone in the racecourse as he said - "The name 'Missing You' was an expression of how much I really miss my wife Villoo and when the filly won it struck a very emotional chord.' It is moments like these that brings out those divine feelings and that pronounces the greatness of being humane.

Well, minutes before those beautiful moments, jockey David Allan was tactfully positioning his filly Missing You steering clear of the pack and racing with the front bunch, craftily keeping her on the outside and out of the melee. Makhtoom strode out as they settled down to get past his rivals to go into the lead with Dragon Mountain a close second; Marinetti was up in third while Missing You made steady progress all along to be in striking third at the turn. The rest were not too far behind and were huddled close to one another.

David Allan was confident as it showed as he swung into action soon on straightening up for home. he dashed ahead without waiting and Missing You, unlike in her previous runs, straight away surged ahead, getting into a good rhythm, accelerating beautifully and stretching away from those close behind. That impulsive ploy paid rich dividends as Missing You galloped on gamely leaving the rest to chase her down. There was an element of risk involved without doubt, but David Allan backed himself and the filly and sustained the momentum all the way to notch up a comfortable victory although the anxious moments lasted almost all the way. Hunt For Gold, the prime fancy, did shape well around the distance post and then there was Trouvaille who was covering ground briskly inside the final furlong with a good late dash. However, Missing You was far superior on the day and the Dallas Todywalla trained filly dazzled all the way to script a beautiful story for her esteemed owners.

Young trainer Deepesh Narredu saddled Awesome One (Dean's Kitten - Aim to Achieve, Sohna Stud) to an emphatic victory to claim the Sir Victor Sasoon Gold Trophy in the hands of jockey Yash Narredu. After taking a good jump, Yash settled Awesome One in third as Mozart first and then Celestial Light got past him.
Celestial Light led them into the straight with Mozart on her haunches; Awesome One moved up steadily to join these two, while favourite Intense Stylist moved up to make his bid from the outside.

Mozart stuck by as Awesome One drew level and nosed ahead. Mozart tried hard to stay in contention, but Awesome One quickened well and it was all over. Awesome One bounded forward with a spirited finishing run and won drawing away. Intense Stylist tried hard but could not pip Mozart for the runner up berth and had to settle for the third spot. Awesome One was clearly superior on the day and can be placed to win again.

Turning Point (Surfrider - Avec Plaisir, Ruia Stud) picked up his first win in the top class with a fiery gallop at the business end that simply shut out the opponents including B Fifty Two who was at the helm until Turning Point came with his late dash.

B Fifty Two was comfortably in from approaching the 600 meter mark but as they turned for home, Turning point had already covered a lot of ground and was turning on the heat on B Fifty Two. B Fifty put up some resistance early in the straight, however, he failed to sustain and soon Turning point surged ahead and eventually sped away from B Fifty Two to win comfortably. Gloriosus was throwing his head around in the early part and gave his jockey a tough time, but in the straight he covered a lot of ground to finish a notable third, just failing to peg back B Fifty Two.

Pesi Shroff trained Across The Sea ( Phoenix Tower -  Symi, Manjri Stud) notched up his maiden victory on his fourth start. Settled in fourth for most part of the journey, Across the Sea switched lanes in the straight and accelerated gradually to pounce on the front runners. Celestia led them into the straight and was soon challenged by the favourite Turmeric Tower who shaped well as he got past the leader. Across The Sea, with jockey Trevor in the saddle, loomed large and soon the pair battled hard for a brief while. Across the Sea got stronger at the finish and managed to beat Turmeric Tower by a narrow margin. Daddy's Pride finished on fastest to finish a notable third.

Shroff struck again in the very next race with Momentum (Mull of Kintyre - Cockayne, Sohna Stud) winning the Intervalve Poonawalla Ltd Trophy. Momentum improved both timing wise and margin wise against Brazos over his last victory.

Momentum got the lead earlier than planned as Mount Olympus went wayward midway through the backstretch. Momentum galloped on smoothly all the way into the straight and jockey Akshay kept the 'momentum' going all the way home. Brazos improved in the straight and even looked like putting up a challenge as he closed in approaching the distance post, however, the Shroff trained gelding kept churning on and outlasted Brazos easily in the end.

Jockey A Sandesh had to dig deep and use all his riding skills to catch up and pip hot favourite Dazzling Star on the last stride. Dazzling Star opened throttle soon on turning for home and shaped like a winner too inside the final furlong. Sandesh got Divine Power going and had to handle a lot of dead weight too. he wore down Dazzling Star, gaining with every stride to wipe off the deficit and in the final surge managed to pip Dazzling Star on the post. Bounty Queen came with a rush and added pep to the finish as she just failed to nail the two in front, finishing just a head behind Dazzling Star.

Apprentice jockey AS Peter rode a confident race astride Asad Siddique's Gandalf (Sussex - Never Say Goodbye, Pratap Stud) to win the concluding race of the day. Gandalf was nowhere in the picture when the lead was changing rapidly in the straight. Hi Ho Silver got past the front runners and just as she was hailed as the possible winner, Dragonmoss arrived with a strong gallop. The eyes had hardly shifted to Dragonmoss when Gandalf arrived with a smooth but powerful run. When Gandalf flashed on the scene, he floored the rest and sailed ahead to pile up three lengths on Dragonmoss in split seconds. Hi Ho Silver ran on to save the place money.

Trainer Pesi Shroff was the lone pro to score a double.
