ASHWA BAHULA, SOUTHERN CROWN WIN JURALA CUP DIV I & II

By Mahendra Mallya | 25 Feb 2019 | HYDERABAD

Outsiders came to the fore as favourites tumbled in most races on the concluding of the Hyderabad season. The curtains however, will come down at Hyderabad after the Invitation Cup to be held during the first weekend of March.

Ashwa Bahula (Mull of Kintyre – Lii Najma) from the stables of trainer Srinivas Reddy annexed the upper division of the Jarula Cup showing clear superiority over her rivals. Ashwa Bahula, with jockey Imran Chisty in the saddle, settled the filly down quickly towards the inside in the fourth position until the turn.

Astra led them into the straight with Your Grace alongside; Chisty switched Ashwa Bahula to the outside and egged her on. Ashwa Bahula lugged out slightly and that held her back for a couple of strides, but she focussed soon enough and there ended any possible challenge from brewing. Ashwa Bahula stretched out nicely to win with a good margin. Ashka Ashka Ashka and Aragonda Princess improved positions to take the next two slots.

Southern Crown (Aljohar – Jingles) picked up the lower division of the Jurala Cup with a sustained gallop in the homestretch. La Romance entered the straight with a slender lead but was soon countered by Southern Crown who arrived with a zestful run. Southern Crown got past La Romance with ease and built up nicely to surge well ahead. He galloped on gamely even as Newport arrived with flashing finish, but it was just not enough to catch the winner. Southern Crown successfully smothered the late attack and survived holding on to post a narrow win. Top Link saved the place money. Champion Bull arrived from long way back to finish in the frame.

Paso Robles (Arazan – Mawaheb) trained by L D’Silva flourished with a late bid and jockey P Trevor timed his run aptly and steered the favourite away from the traffic on the wide outside.  Original Temptress led them into the straight and soon fell back as Buzz Light Year got past her; Kintsugi was hard at work to stay in contention, while Paso Robles moved up widest out. Peso Robles picked up momentum approaching the distance post and arrived with a fiery burst of speed to down Buzz Light Year a couple of strides from the winning post to register a fine maiden win on her second start, bagging the div one of the Onnu Onnu Onnu Cup. Buzz Light Year just missed the bus and had to be content with the runner-up berth, while Kintsugi hung on to save place money.

Zamora (Declaration of War – Aptiana) saddled by Laxman Singh sprang a surprise to knock off her opponents and make a memorable debut. City of Blossom was in the lead as they turned for home with Maskova asking questions, and while Linewiler moved up along the rails, Stepper and Zamora made their bids from the outside. Zamora was the pick of the lot as she finished on powerfully knocking her rivals one by one and stretch away in the last fifty meters to score a convincing victory. Linewiler got the better of City of Blossom for the place stakes.

Shakesphere (Varenar – Pointillist) build on the handy lead he had compiled soon on entering the home and he sped away to steer clear of the rest. Rahil tried to make a fight of it but at a crucial juncture he stumbled and set off a reaction in which those that were following were hindered and in that occurrence, jockey RS Jodha sustained a fall as his mount Southern State veered in sharply, unbalancing the rider. Rahil Steadied herself in time and stayed on to take the runner up berth ahead of Flying Spaghetti and the long-time leader Platinum.

City of Ayaansh (Green Coast – Above the Line) finally notched up a much needed maiden win on his 12th start and this was a clinical effort. Taking off quickly from the gates City of Ayaansh build a sizable lead comeing into the homestretch and handled the task of sustaining through the long Hyderabad straight pretty well.  He kept galloping on even as Bombastic came at him and so did Moka. But neither could make an impact on the leader as jockey Rohit Kumar stayed focused to the task and egged City of Ayaansh on all the way to the winning post. Hurricane finished on fastest on the very wide outside to snatch the runner-up berth from Bombastic and Yogastha.

Magic Street (Green Coast – Justicia) scored a runaway victory his first on his ninth start. It could not have gotten easier for jockey Rohit Kumar was had it all under control right from the start. He led them into the straight with a handy lead and then accelerated nicely to put a huge gap between him and his opponents. Super Act tried hard to bridge the gap but it was just too much to do and not enough ground to cover it in. Magic Street kicked on gamely to score comfortably over Super Act. Agilis and Rose Petals caught the frame but a good distance behind the top two.

Arc of History tried the runaway tactics but failed to sustain as he was clearly overwhelmed by the late dash from Vallee Sceptre (Lord Admiral – Crown Sceptre). Arc of History looked good coming into the straight and held his ground into the final furlong. There he came under pressure as Running Fire came too close for comfort and Arc of History wilted. However, there was more suspence to unfold as Vallee Sceptre arrived with a terrific burst to shock the fighting duo just on the wire. Your Grace too finished on fast and did well to snatch the runner-up berth in the four-way finish.
