MOMENTUM GALLOPS TO THIRD SUCCESSIVE VICTORY

By Mahendra Mallya | 21 Mar 2019 | MUMBAI

Mr Mehernosh H Deboo Mrs Auzita M Deboo & trainer P Shroff leading Momentum (Neeraj Rawal Up), winner of The Radha Sigtia Trophy

Pesi Shroff trained Momentum (Mull of Kintyre – Cockayne, Sohna Stud) extended his winning run to achieve a third successful victory while claiming the Radha Sigtia Trophy. Having won over the present trip of 2400 meters twice earlier, Momentum was backed with confidence and was the joint favourite along with Bronx. This pair battled the entire length of the homestretch as Momentum got past erratic leader Gloriosus to hit the front soon on turning for home. Gloriosus went wide in the back stretch and the jockey had trouble on getting him back on even keel.

Bronx got down to chase Momentum early in the straight and this pair battled hard all the way to the wire. Bronx did look threatening all the time but Momentum with Neeraj Rawal riding out persistently ensured that they stayed ahead and ward off the game challenger. Momentum won by a length and Bronx had to be content to take the runner-up berth. The rest were distance behind.

Princess Annabel (Arazan – Priceless Glory) showed fierce fighting qualities as she grappled with a couple of more experienced rivals while scoring a close win on debut to clinch the Jimmy Bharucha Trophy in a thrilling finish.
Silver Flames this time hit the front soon on start and had Princess Scarlet and Arabesque close behind. Princess Annabelle was closer to the rear, while Queens Gate was taken outward at the gates by Highdare and found herself in the last position.

Silver Flames galloped on with jockey NS Parmar hard at work and looked vulnerable coming into the final furlong, although he was enjoying a slight upper hand. Royal Crystal was warming up and getting closer approaching the distance post. Princess Annabel with jockey Bhawani Singh in the saddle, quickened well and was devouring ground briskly. The Altamash trained filly accelerated fluently in the final 100 meters to storm past Silver Flames and Royal Crystal and land the spoils. Queens Gate did not have the luck of the race. She not only got a raw deal at the start, but even while finishing on well, Princess Annabel shifted out ever so slightly, just enough to cast a doubt in the filly’s mind and she shied away a bit. That managed to pip Silver Flames for the third spot goes to her credit. There was no doubt that Queens Gate was finishing on well and missed out on a good chance to finish more prominently.

Zadmal Singh’s Arrecife (Arazan – Intuitio, Exhilaration Stud) notched up a maiden victory on her 12th start and had to fight hard for the memorable first win. Whoopsidaisy led them all the way into the straight and was kicking on gamely to stay ahead. Nightfall tried to challenge the leader but could never get past. Arrecife, with jockey PS Chouhan in the saddle took a while before picking up momentum and he inched his way closer in the final furlong. He caught up with Whoopsidaisy but had to contend with the fast finishing Master of Studies who put up a game challenge but lost out narrowly as Arrecife held on grimly to get her taste of victory. Whoopsidaisy hung on to save place money.

Narendra Lagad trained Red Carnation was another one to achieve a maiden success and this was his 10th outing. He was close behind leaders Fire Flame and Bee Quirky and made his move on entering the straight. Red Carnation made steady headway and got past Bee Quirky with ease but had to keep the momentum going. Navigator was too close for comfort and apprentice jockey PS Kavraj had to ride him out all the way to stay ahead past the post.  Navigator kicked on to send a close second, just over a length behind the winner. Isinit was poorly poised and was last one into the straight, but did well to manage to finish in the money.

Harmony of the Sea, from the stables of trainer Imtiaz Sait had it easy and the second in demand was well ridden by jockey Trevor to score an emphatic victory. Democrat led them into the straight with Super Mario close behind, Poco Azul started to draw closer to these two past the 400 m mark. Harmony of the Sea made her bid from the outside and the moment Trevor alerted her to the task, she responded with a good burst of speed to sail past the bunch of runners in front bounding toward the winning post.  Golden Eclipse and Fencing charged in with a late dash to take up the minor positions.

Pablo (Varenar – Si Gentille, Equus Stud) saddled by Sanjay Kolse was perhaps the most impressive winner of the day. He settled in the mid-bunch as Bonafide hit the front and led them into the straight. Bonafide galloped well and built a handy lead coming into the straight, but soon Pablo started to catch up with the leader. Favourite Tasch was a pale shadow of his winning performance on debut and although he was in striking position on straightening up, he could not capitalize on it.

Pablo collared Bonafide midway into the straight and surged past without encountering any resistance. He worked up good speed and marched on ahead to draw away from them all and won easing up by a healthy margin of over five lengths. Bonafide fought on and did well to keep Tasch at bay for the runner up berth.
