DESERT GOD WINS ST.LEGER IN FINE STYLE

By Ikram Khan | 28 Jul 2019 | BANGALORE

Col. Swapan Bhadra, Mrs Sharmila Padmanabhan & trainer S Padmanabhan leading Desert God (A Sandesh Up), winner of The Tetrasoft Inc. Bangalore St. Leger (Gr.2)

The legendary Desert God who found the in-form and more importantly a lot younger Adjudicate, winner of the Indian Turf Invitation Cup, too hot to handle in his earlier start won the final classic, the St. Leger, to sign off in style. Sandesh took the top choice to the front and set a comfortable pace in the gruelling 2800M energy-sapping trip and the champion performer produced another fine effort, first shrugging off the serious challenge of the Mumbai hopeful Roberta at the distance post before putting the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong. Point To Prove finished third while Salazaar failed to make an impression, finding the trip beyond his compass.

The eight to one shot Angel's Kiss floored the two fancied contestants, Kvasir from Pradeep's yard who was backed to the exclusion of his 10 rivals and Wings Of Desire (4/1), in the upper division of the Smart Chieftan Cup run over a sprint. Antony Raj partnering the winner pushed the Arjun Manglorkar ward to the front soon after the start and successfully held on to snuff out of the challenge of Wings Of Desire. Kvasir despite Srinath packing punch in the straight failed to match strides with the first two and finished a tame third.

The lower division of the event was claimed by the Prithviraj schooled Depth Charge confidently piloted by Pradeep. The first favourite Helenka from Kishan Thomas' yard piloted by Zervan finished on strongly to finish a creditable second ahead of Panama. The Nithyanand ward opened the favourite before money came pouring in on Helenka. But the public choice met a tartar in Depth Charge who gamely held on to win much to the chagrin of the railbirds.

A big coup on Princess Holly came good in the Allied Forces Plate. The winner from Narayan Gowda's yard who was backed down from a long price to favouritism trounced her 11 rivals in the hands of apprentice jockey Raghu. Hafnium did well to finish second ahead of She's Superb while the other fancied contestant Fantastic App and the lesser fancied Prince Azeem were never in the hunt.

Earlier, the Neil Darashah-trained public rage Tenno Sho, a half-money favourite in the opening event, the Manitou Plate made every post a winning one in the hands of leading pro Trevor Patel. The consistent performer who was knocking at the door looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring and readily justified the confidence of followers of form winning without being unduly extended. Cavaliere from Arjun Manglorkar's yard gained the runner-up berth ahead of the Padmanabhan schooled Legendary Princess who struggled to keep pace.

The topweighted Darahasini from Pradeep Annaiah's yard was heavily backed in the Lively Emprey Plate run over a sprint. The favourite opened at (19/10) before being slammed down to (90/100). John astride the public choice after failing to gain a favourable position early on in the race swung the favourite wide on the outside at the top of the straight before charging down to challenge the lesser fancied Arrogance who had streaked ahead and established a winning lead. The Rajesh Narredu ward piloted by brother Suraj didn't let the initiative slip and held on to score from the Pradeep ward. Show Girl after a couple of listless efforts surprised most gaining the third spot in the hands of Vinod Shinde while Majestic Rajkumari, who at one stage looked good to save place money, had to rest content with the fourth spot. After Arrogance broke the favourite chain in the second race, Life Awaits, a 20 to one shot dropped the biggest bombshell in the Marillingaiah Memorial Trophy run over a sprint. Treasure Delight from Satish Narredu's yard was fancied most like Darahasini and it turned out to be a same result, Treasure Delight like Darahasini finishing second, nosing out Fair Warning. Last start winner War Hero who also enjoyed small support from his connections failed to display his true potential and finished off the frame.
