NRI POWER WINS CHARMINAR TROPHY

By Mahendra Mallya | 19 Aug 2019 | HYDERABAD

Trainer Robin Reddy Kondakalla leading N R I Power (Kuldeep Singh Up), winner of The Charminar Trophy

Mossad (Hymn – Night Dancer) from the stables of trainer Ananta Vatsalya, pulled off his maiden victory outpacing his rivals in the straight. Halo's Princess surged into the lead on start with Lion Heart in second; Turf Emperor made progress to settle in third with Hud Hud close behind, Mossad had Dippy Dip behind him until past the half way mark.

Halo's Princess tried the runaway tactics at the turn and established a fairly big lead, but that ploy failed to work as Mossad gathered momentum in the final two furlongs and started to inch closer, lapping up the deficit briskly. Turf Emperor tried hard to stay in contention, but found Mossad too good to tackle. Mossad eventually won with a sizable margin and Turf Emperor had to be content with the next best slot. Halo Princess was not disappointing in the least, as she ended close behind Turf Emperor.

Reunion bit the dust and the shortest priced runner of the day barely made an impact on the outcome of the race. Carrying 62 kilos, Reunion understandably sat in the last position as Magical Skill made the early running.

Golden Fortune moved up to led them into the straight and jockey Ajeeth Kumar got the Deshmukh ward going at a good clip. Be Sure came up with a game challenge but all he could do was join Golden Fortune, but never get past. Golden Fortune galloped resolutely and fought his way through to etch out a narrow win. Golden Fortune also wrote his name in the record books by smashing the track record clocking 1:51:55 eclipsing Policy Maker's record of 1:55:82 set in 2016. Be Sure fought hard and stuck by the winner right through and was a gallant second; after all it needed a record-breaking run to beat the mare. Reunion could have wilted under the heavy weight he had to carry and deserves another chance.

Deshmukh struck again this time with prime favourite Ruletheworld (Speaking of Which – Averoff) who was ably ridden by apprentice jockey Surya Prakash. Settling in second behind Red Snapper, Ruletheworld inched closer soon on turning for home and sped ahead of Red Snapper with ease. Only in the lead, Ruletheworld galloped resolutely to stay comfortably ahead of his rivals and clinch the issue scoring his maiden win on his fifth start. Explosive and Miss Marvellous finished on well but neither posed any threat to the winner.

Victory Parade (Top Class – Harmonica) pulled off an impressive victory with a strong finish, stretching away in the final furlong to romp home all alone. Victory Parade was out quickly and was joined by Consigliori and these two were a shade ahead of Hailstorm and Honest Hunter.

Victory Parade, with Akshay Kumar in the saddle, shifted gears on turning for home and started to break away from Consigliori. Victory Parade accelerated well and drew away and Consigliori just could not match up to the winner.  Honest Hunter ran on to save place money finishing ahead of Dunkirk.

L D'Silva trained Max (Chinese Whisper – Confluence) strode out majestically in the homestretch to reign supreme in the final furlong and score a facile victory. It was not all smooth sailing though initially as Max found himself at the rear of the front bunch which was closely huddled. City of Ayaansh led them into the straight with Amazing Script close behind, Max started to devour ground from the wide outside. Once Max started to accelerate, he looked good enough and it was a matter of time before he would take charge. Apprentice Jockey Afroz Khan got into action mode and Max responded with a powerful burst surging ahead of the front-bunch and then lunging forward to skip away from them all. Amazing Script did well to pick the runner-up berth. Favourite Holy Healer never looked in the hunt but ran on to finish a close third.

Siyabonga ran the worst race of her career and just could raise a gallop at the business end. She was in third as King Maker led the field with NRI Power in second as they turned for home. King Maker resisted meekly and soon NRI Power (Excellent Art – Awarding) shot past the leader and was galloping at a good clip. Siyabonga looked in trouble as she did not raise any quality gallop and simply bowed out without even a fight. NRI Power compiled a useful lead coming into the final furlong. Nayadeep improved well and picked up speed and was seen finishing the fastest, but had too much to do with not much ground left. NRI Power held on as Nayadeep fell short by a narrow margin. King Maker held on to save place money from Durango.

Evon Von Brando (Net Whizz – Private Collections) won the concluding race f the day with a neat start-to-finish essay. He entered the straight with apprentice jockey Surya Prakash urging him forward. Evon Von Brando responded with a fiery gallop and stretched away from Magic Street and increasing the distance between them. None of the others made any impression on the winner as Evon Von Brando marched on ahead to score by a widening margin. Delphina who was way too far back, ran on to finish second. Southern State saved the place money. For apprentice lad Surya Prakash, Evon Von Brando got him his first landmark of completing 10 winners and his allowance will now be reduced to 3.5 kilos and he will be allowed to carry the whip.

For the professionals, trainer LVR Deshmukh sent out a fine treble, while apprentice jockeys Afroz Khan and Surya Prakash scored a double each.
