LONG RANGE WINS POLICE CUP IN THRILLING FINISH

By Mahendra Mallya | 01 Sep 2019 | HYDERABAD

Trainer R H Sequeira leading Long Range (Abhay Singh Up), winner of The Police Cup

Long Range (Surfrider - Outtostealthescene) created a flutter in the main event of the day - The Police Cup. chasing runaway leader Mr Baahubali until into the straight, Long Range surged ahead with a furlong and half to go. Apprentice jockey Abhay Singh rode out with single-minded determination and that seemed to have got the best out of the Sequeira trainee. Long Range kicked on regardless of the challenge brewing behind with favourite Ace Ace Ace inching closer and Ashwa Bahula warming up for his final bid. Long Range held on courageously as Ashwa Bahula flew towards the end only to fall short narrowly. Ace Ace Ace ended a close third.

Popular fancy Nimble Mind (Burden of Proof - Systematic) obliged her large number of followers with a strong finish to score a comfortable victory in the Dr Harish Chandra Memorial Plate. Liberate tried to repeat her start to finish style but this time could not sustain.

Liberate led them into the straight but soon had Midnight Dream putting up a strong challenge. Nimble Mind, with jockey Koushik in the saddle, started to improve in the straight and quickened approaching the distance post. Nimble Mind met with some resistance from Midnight Dream but in the final few strides, it was all Nimble Mind. The Sequeira trained filly won with a measure of comfort from Midnight Dream; Cincia Azzurrra ran on to finish in the money.

Sequeira had started the day on a winning note with Call of the Blue (Chinese Whisper - Nightlife) also obliging the followers of favourites. Jockey Akshay Kumar settle the filly well off the pace over the 2400m journey as Ashwa Arjun made all the early running. On turning for home, it was Symbol of Star's who took charge and built a slender lead. Call of the Blue started to wear the new leader down with a sustained gallop and Askhay Kumar had to urge the gelding all the way. Symbol of Star's gave him a tough fight for a breif while, but finally gave in as Call of The Blue surged ahead a few strides from the winning post to win by over two lengths. Symbol of Star's did well to stay in second at the wire comfortably ahead of Mossad.

Jockey Akshay Kumar struck immediately in the very next race astride Ravindra Singh's ward Artistryy (Sedgefield - Ballade Danon) in the upper division of the Diablo Plate for maidens.

Flamboyant Lady led them into the straight and was reluctant to surrender her lead. She fought on grimly even as Ashwa Calvari and Artistryy attacked her from either side. Premier Action took a while to warm up but came with a fast run, but was not fast enough to get the measure of Artistryy. Akshay Kumar looked well in control as he rode out Artistryy all the way past the winning post sparing less than a length to the fast finishing Premier Action. Flamboyant Lady fought off Ashwa Calvari to wrest back the third place.

Heaven Can Wait (Eljohar - Hava Nagila) saddled by trainer Ananta Vatsalya, was ably ridden by apprentice jockey Afroz Khan who warded off a stiff challenge from Akshay ridden favourite On My way and both these runners were way behind entering the homestretch.

Composure had a good lead coming into the straight and he was made to look even better off with the lead as Actually and company were struggling to catch up. Heaven Can Wait and On My Way made a forward surge at almost the same juncture but had a leeway to cover in the last furlong. Composure was still comfortably ahead and commentator Shiva Prasad made a bold quip stating that Composure "needs the post" with the strong challenge brewing with about 100 to go. He was proved right as Heaven Can Wait collared Composure just in time to win it narrowly from On My Way. Composure settled for the third close behind the top two.

Explosive (Sedgefield - Pickwick Papers) lived up to his name and was indeed explosive at the business end. It was not smooth sailing by any measure for the winner as favourite Her Legacy had shaped well leading them deep into the straight but started to feel the pressure as Allitson and No Compromise were getting too close for comfort. Explosive emerged from between the horses to challenge Her Legacy with about 100 to go. Jockey R Ajinkya rode his heart out and got the Ravindra Singh trainee to give off that extra bit and they surged past Her Legacy in the dying moments of the race to score by just under two lengths. Her legacy ended a good second warding off No Compromise and Allitson who all finished in heap.

Joy of Giving (Dancing Forever - Shivalik Stone) made heavy weather of what could have been an easier task by running erratic and not maintaining a straight course. Jockey SG Prasad had a tough time in the straight as Joy of Giving veered outward and then inward again after leading them into the straight. Top Contender fought hard and kept up his challenge not letting Joy of Giving get away. Humaaghar then produced a good gallop to join the fighting duo. Joy of Giving however, kicked on gamely to thwart off the challengers and hold on to carve out a narrow win from Humaaghar and Top Contender finishing close alongside.

Royal Green (Revel - Cindy Lou Two) waited behind leader Platinum Classz until into the straight and then jockey Ajit Singh swung into action urging Royal Green ahead under some hard riding. The Ravindra Singh ward responded well and stole a march past the distance post and galloped away picking up good speed and leaving it to the rest to catch up. Royal Green sustained it all the way and pulled off an upset win. Vancouver ended second, while Magical Skill arrived with a big gallop far too late ending a close third.

For the professionals, trainers RH Sequeira and Ravindra Singh saddled a double each, while jockey Akshay Kumar scored a double.
