KRAMER UPSETS FANCIED TRIO

By Epsom Ace | 03 Sep 2019 | KOLKATA

Trainer Vikash Jaiswal leading Kramer (Rupal Singh up), winner of The State Treasure Handicap

Vikash Jaiswal’s 15/1 shot Kramer bagged the State Treasure Handicap after pegging back the fancied trio of The Kiss, Arashi and his stablemate Mygrator. Piloted by able apprentice Rupal Singh, Kramer moved with telling strides under the whip to overhaul Mygrator and stave off the public fancy The Kiss without much ado. The disappointment was Arashi who lacked the sparkle of his earlier run. It may be noted that his odds also expanded.

Earlier in the day, the opening event, The Ballet Master Cup, saw the Raunak Banerji-trained favourite Descartes (Mahesh up) make every post a winning one. Though Vrishank issued a serious challenge in the straight, he could never head the front-runner – a six-year-old from western India by China Visit out of Tarnished Lady.

Jockey Neeraj  Rawal finally broke his duck for the season with a hard-fought triumph while astride Bharath Singh-trained Bojangles (Win Legend-Moment Of The Day) in the day’s last race – The Vanitas Handicap run over 1800m. He too made every post a winning one.  The favourite issued a serious challenge in the straight but Bojangles stretched out well once Neeraj put the whip away and rode him out hands and heels.

The Jujube Handicap, run over seven furlongs, saw Prince Of Heart close as the surprise favourite. Needless to say that he was never in the race and finished in the ruck. Optimum was next in demand and he ran a good race. He looked to heading for the winning post midway up the straight but a tenacious effort on 5/1 shot Fabiola from Hindu Singh saw the filly land the spoils. Sired by Whatsthescript out of Understood, Fabiola was the first of two winners who sported the green-and white colours of Joydeep Datta Gupta and team  – the other being Bojangles.

The Two In One Handicap- a No Whip race – saw seven-year-old Dancing Prince (Ace-Dancing Greens) put his best foot forward again. Sujit Kumar Paswan was once again in the saddle. The front-runner ended up on the outer rails as he is wont to do. Aashna made a bold effort to get on even terms her adversary but failed. It would be a cliche to state that she will be worth keeping an eye on as form-workers have been keeping an eye on her for the past one year. The rest of the field never appeared to have a chance against the heavily gambled ‘Prince” (of Kolkata racecourse).

Trainer Vijay Singh completed a well-deserved double with Hukumat (Win Legend-Epic) and Gaurish (Top Class-Nano Belle). Both runners closed as favourites. Nikhil Naidu rode a well-judged race on the former to bag the Stay In Shape Plate. The classy filly may do well over longer trips. On this occasion, she left the field cold in the straight. In his eagerness to wrap up the race, Naidu appeared to use the whip a trifle redundantly. Naidu was far more relaxed on Gaurish as he made every post a winning one and quite easily staved off the likes of Princess Rumela and Dil Mangey More.
