Trainer Aashay Doctor leading Izzy (D S Deora Up), winner of The Calcutta Fillies Trial Stakes

The rainy season’s first classic – The Calcutta Fillies Trial Stakes – saw an upset of sorts as Aashay Doctor-trained Izzy (6/1) was piloted to a facile four-length victory by Dhanu Singh Deora. The runner-up too was none of the fancied runners as Vijay Singh’s Valeria occupied that slot after giving up the lead to the eventual winner mid-way up the straight. The fancied trio of Rosina, Eastside and Louboutin finished third, fourth and fifth respectively. Deora maintained the filly by Western Aristocrat out of La Joie De Vie in third slot, behind pacemakers Arabesque and Valeria.  After the turning for home, Valeria shot ahead, but Deora ensured that his mount stayed in close contact. In the final furlong, it was all Izzy. The winner is jointly owned by the Doctor family, Zadmal Singh and Menaka Gupta.  It’s quite possible that much fancied Rosina may prefer a longer trip.  The disappointment in the race was Eastside who appeared to be out of her league.

Apprentice Sujit Kumar Paswan surpassed all expectations when he grabbed all three opportunities that came his way to land a lucrative treble comprising Hurricane Storm(10/1), The Last Judgment (3/1) and Eastern Star (18/10). The last named lifted the Bhishma Cup after staving off a strong challenge from Accolade. The Bharath Singh-trained four-year-old by Knight’s Tour out of Lyocel was handily placed behind front-runner Amorous White till well into the straight. As Paswan made his move, so did Deora on Accolade. Thereafter it was a neck and neck battle for supremacy. The apprentice rode his third winner like a man of experience and in fact eased his mount in the final 30 metres! Kudos to the lad! One thing is sure, the boy will be much in demand at this centre after this show as he can still claim a 3kg allowance.

Paswan’s first winner was Daniel David-trained six-year-old Hurricane Storm (Hurricane Dream – Paddy’s Dasher). He had to pull out all stops to get the better of Dakshesh in a close contest. Itsamoocow ended up a good third. In the very next race, The Windsor Forest Handicap, Paswan rode another fighting finish atop Javed Khan-trained The Last Judgment (Sussex-Midnight Club) to get the better of Diamond Harbour and Glorious Leaps.

Trainer Vijay Singh opened the afternoon’s proceedings with a double – Yuvan and Arjuna. Both runners won their respective mile races start-to-finish quite comfortably . Yuvan (Arazan-Accessorize) bagged the Alibi Handicap with Nikhil Naidu astride while Arjuna (Pleasantly Perfect-Disarming) was piloted by the reliable Suraj Narredu in The Bold Raider Handicap.

The last race of the day, The Andrada Handicap, saw Summerhill being installed as the favourite. The six-year-old was never in it despite Suraj Narredu’s best efforts. He seems to be another one of those horses that fall into the ‘bookies delight’ category. Carpe Noctem tried to make every post a winning one but came unstuck when challenged by the 6/1 shot Novikov (Holding Court-Dancer’s Fan) from James Mckeown’s yard. The mare was ridden by Hindu Singh.
