KAMBAKU WINS MAHARAJA'S CUP IN STEWARDS ROOM

By Ikram Khan | 20 Sep 2019 | MYSORE

Trainer Arjun Mangalorkar receiving The Maharaja's Cup (Gr.3) from Dr. Pramoda Devi Wadiyar

Leading trainer Arjun Manglorkar understandably was down after Thailand performed below par in the 1000 Guineas on Thursday. The wheel of fortune swung in his favour the next day, lesser fancied Kambaku emerging the new Maharaja, winning the prestigious Maharaja's Cup after the Chennai  star My Opinion  was disqualified  after winning the event. My Opinion from trainer B Suresh's yard  shifted out and  and interfered with the progress of Shesmyscript who was making a run on the outside and as result it appeared that the Irfan ward Shesmyscript clipped the heels of the winner and Trevor Patel astride Shesmyscript was unseated. The stewards decided to disqualify My Opinion and since Shesmyscript dropped her jockey before the winning post, Kambaku who had finished second was declared the winner to the delight of Arjun while the Chennai camp was not pleased pointing out that it was Shesmyscript, who had clipped the winner. But the fact that My Opinion shifted out at the all-important end resulting in a fall went against Imran and My Opinion. In racing it is not your opinion or my opinion which counts and only the opinion of stewards holds good  and Kambaku  was  declared the new Maharaja. Psychic Force was placed second while Star Baron, the stablemate of My Opinion took the third spot.

Earlier Trevor had struck on the Michael Eshwer-trained Electricity in the principal added attraction, the H H Sri Narasimharaja Wadiyar Memorial Trophy. The winner who was strongly fancied to score proved too good for his 10 rivals romping home without raising a sweat. It appears that Electricity has peaked right and is set to provide an encore. The two Rakesh contestants Order Order and the topweighted Top Striker produced game efforts. The former finished second ahead of his stablemate while Arak came home in time to make the frame.

Another favourite Animal Queen showed a clean pair of heels to her 11 rivals in the upper division of the Ranganathittu Plate run over a sprint. The winner from Rajesh Narredu's yard was confidently piloted by his elder brother Suraj. Hafnium gained the runner-up berth ahead of the second in demand at the betting ring, Ozark while Stari Grad caught the eye leisurely coming home to figure in the frame.

The two runners from trainer Shravanan's yard flashed past the post locked together in the Shimsha Plate before the magic eye nodded in favour of Safe Bet piloted by Imran Chisty. Both the contestants were supported in the betting ring, money first coming on Brave Admiral piloted by Rajesh Kumar and later Safe Bet too garnered good support from the right quarters. It was good to see one owner fancy both his horses and they justified his confidence finishing 1-2 in the event to the delight of both their supporters.

The Corporal on the strength of his brilliant performances on the trial track was an on-money favourite in the opening event, the lower division of the Ranganathittu Plate and the debutant well turned out by Parvati did make a smashing winning debut in the hands of Zervan.

After Trevor was dislodged on Shesmyscript in the Maharaja's Cup, T S Jodha got the opportunity to partner Australis from Satish Narredu's yard and Jodha made no mistake packing punch on the Satish ward to edge out Starry Wind in a close encounter, a `neck' separating the two at the wire. The favourite Super Smart only managed to save place money, finishing third ahead of Reanna.

Imran Khan who lost a race which he had won went home satisfied booting home the Dominic-trained Habanero in the concluding event. The winner available at (5/1) in the betting ring streaked ahead at the distance post before putting the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong. Paradiso produced a late dash to finish second ahead of Aerospeed  while the favourite Sadaqat after gaining a favourable position at the final curve flopped badly and eventually finished in the ruck.
