MOZAMBIQUE WINS TOTARAM’S TROPHY

Trainer Laxman Singh leading Mozambique (Akshay Kumar Up), winner of The Totaram's Trophy

Mozambique (Western Aristocrat – Jahanara) impressed yet again while racing away with her third win of the season and fourth on the trot, while bagging the Totaram’s Trophy run over 1200 meters. The five year old mare from trainer Laxman Singh’s yard had it easy as she won as she liked and was never even challenged at any stage. She was off in a flash and sped ahead to lead the field. Lightning Fin and Titus were initially just a couple of lengths behind Mozambique, however, nether this pair nor any other rival had any answer to Mozambique’s splendid acceleration in the homestretch. Jockey Akshay Kumar was in complete control and Mozambique extended well and steered clear of the hapless Titus who followed her home finishing a good three and half lengths behind. Ambitious Approach improved in the straight to take the third spot.

Ace jockey Suraj Narredu was the shining star of the day guiding home three prime favourites in the six-event card. His first success for the day came astride Sequeira’s ward Roll Call (Whatsthescript – Knockenduff) in the second race of the day. Suraj kept the strongly fancied Roll Call off the pace as Charlie Brown took over the running form Symbol of Star’s towards the latter curve of the backstretch. Charlie Brown picked up well from there on and led the field homeward. Symbol of Star’s faded away earlier than expected. Francis Bacon was in second, but was getting nowhere and just going through the motions. Roll Call started to make headway past the 300 m and arrived with a big run. Although Charlie Brown had a cushion of a lead, Roll Call was moving sweetly and in no time surged past Charlie Brown to win with a good measure of comfort. Charlie Brown had a good outing as well finishing under two lengths behind the winner and well ahead of Francis Bacon.

Suraj next piloted Paso Robles (Arazan – Mawaheb) to an even more comfortable victory to win the Raja Saheb of Itkyal Memorial Cup. It was all smooth sailing for Paso Robles but for a slight concern as the rider of Excelsior lost his stirrups and was racing just ahead of the favourite until the turn. Fortunately it all went safely and Paso Robles quickened soon on turning for home to sail into the lead. Suraj had only to nudge Paso Robles and it was all over. The L D’Silva trained filly stretched out fluently and was off and away from the rest within strides. There was no threat in sight and Suraj did not have to move a muscle at any stage. Paso Robles won easing up and was hard held all the way to the winning post to win by close to four lengths. Galloping Gangster was close behind the winner while turning for home, could only watch Paso Robles race out of reach. City of Wisdom ended a faraway third.

Suraj Narredu then capped the day with another resolute victory astride Wah Ms Zara (Sedgefield – Cozumel) in the concluding race of the day. Setting off at a good pace Wah Ms Zara led from the start and moved well in the homestretch to bet the opposition by a good four lengths plus. The rest submitted meekly with Healthandhappiness finishing a tame second well ahead of Flag of Honour.

Best In Show (Tazahum – Dubai Spirit) won the opening race of the day with a fine showing. The Laxman Singh ward settled in second behind Coconut Coast until the turn and soon sped ahead with apprentice jockey Gopal Singh doing a good job. Once in the lead, Best In Show lived up to his name, result wise, but did not look good while drifting out in the last few strides. He had the momentum going and was reasonably clear of the rest, winning by a comfortable margin. Bedazzled and Top in Turf too drifted out while taking the minor placing.

Urvasi (Net Whizz – Rick Princess) may have enjoyed a stroke of luck while winning her maiden race.  Gusty Look led them into the straight and was galloping well with a handy lead approaching the distance post. Urvasi made progress along the rails but was still a couple of lengths behind Gusty Look with a furlong to go. At this juncture, Gusty Look veered out abruptly and went way too wide across the turf. Jockey Rohit Kumar seized the opportunity and urged the Satyanarayana trained filly to slip ahead and win by just over a length. Gusty Look certainly squandered a good chance to score by that wayward run at a crucial juncture, ending second. Sputnic just about managed the third place as Bob Campbell finished on fast from the last position and just fell short by a head from taking the third spot.

For the professionals, jockey Suraj Narredu was the star pro with three winners, while trainer Laxman Singh saddled a double.
