By Ikram Khan | 03 Oct 2019 | MYSORE

Trainer Sriram Komandur leading Diamond Rays (Y S Srinath Up), winner of The Chief Minister's Trophy

After a couple of failures, Diamond Rays justified his rating to the delight of the followers of form in the Chief Minister's Trophy, the plum event run over a sprint on Thursday.

The Sriram Komandur ward looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring and readily produced his best in the hands of leading pro Srinath. Now that Diamond Rays has resumed his winning ways the talented sprinter is set to add to his kitty before the curtains are brought down this season. Haedi's Folly, who has changed stables moving out from Darius Byramji's yard and joining Mohd Khan's string finished a creditable second ahead of Side Winder.

The popular 'Jodi', even money favourite Kimera and the well backed Colonel Harty went out of the window in the Dr M A M Ramaswamy Trophy, run over a distance of seven furlongs. The lesser fancied Glorious Destiny from J Sebastian yard powerfully piloted by Umesh gained the day edging out Colonel Harty who in his effort to make every post a winning one shifted out badly at the all-important end and this cost him a certain race. Facile last start winner Kimera who at one stage looked good to record his second straight success, failed to quicken when the race came on a boil and had to rest content with the third spot.

On the strength of his impressive effort in his last start and subsequent eye-catching movements in the morning trials, Glorious Dancer from the stables of Lokanath Gowda was backed to the exclusion of his eleven rivals in the Ellora Plate and the top fancy without a fuss bolted home in the hands of the promising Darshan. Radiant Treasure did well to gain the runner-up berth ahead of Chantelle while the top rated Another Rainbow filled the frame.

Darshan earlier booted home the public choice Agnar to a convincing victory in the Mandya Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. The Pradeep Annaiah ward competing in the lowest class looked head and shoulders above his 11 rivals and Darshan encountered no problems while guiding the favourite home. Agnar needed to win the race again in the stewards room following an objection lodged by jockey Prabhakaran guiding the fortunes of Dolphin. Prabhakaran contented that the winner cut across his mount and as a result his progress in the final stages was hampered. The stewards quickly and rightly overruled his protest.

Monte Greco from Bipin Salvi's yard garnered the maximum support in the Jayanagara Plate run over a sprint. But all that the top fancy did was take a lot of good money down the drain, finishing a tame third. Rank outsider All In, in the hands of Anand shocked the rail birds, paying out a rich dividend of Rs.642 for a tenner at the tote window. Eloika finished second while Sufficient Proof made the frame.

After the top fancy Russian Spy opted out from the Fleet Indian Plate, last start winner Ireland was fancied strongly and the J Sharavanan ward who had floored his rivals last week came good again to the delight of the Sharavanan camp. Lesser fancied Big Time Bay piloted by apprentice jockey Chotu Jaiswar challenged the public choice strongly and was locked in a ding-dong battle all the way in the final furlong before going down by the shortest of margins. Felix Legion fancied in place by his connections made sure  that his supporters went home on a happy note.

In the concluding event, the Jog Falls Plate, Cyclone on the strength of his impressive victory last Friday was strongly fancied to score. But the overwhelming favourite met a tartar in Murcilago who produced his best to peg back to the challenge of the favourite. The top weighted Nikka after making all the running in the sprint trip held on to finish third ahead of Siddhani.
