Multitude pegs back Whomakestherules

Trainer Vijay Singh leading Multitude (Hindu Singh Up), winner of The Mayfowl Cup

Trainer Vijay Singh’s seven-year-old warhorse Multitude continued his winning ways with a thrilling victory over Whomakestherules in The Mayfowl Cup. In the absence of Suraj Narredu, jockey Hindu Singh got a couple of chance rides – atop Ruby Cube and Multitude – and he made no mistake on either of them. The lad in fact completed a treble on the last named as he had earlier won astride Gold Bond as well. The 1400m trip suited Multitude to the hilt while Whomakestherules would have preferred a furlong more as his late charge fell short by less than a length.

A hairline verdict between well-backed Sheer Force and Glorious Leaps in The Golden Celebration Handicap resulted in some crowd unrest after the sixth race . The controversy was fuelled further as Nikhil Naidu atop the narrow “loser” Sheer Force expected to be led in while RS Bhati on the photo-finish winner Glorious Leaps headed straight for the unsaddling enclosure, assuming he had lost the race. To differentiate between the pair from the photo exhibit, with the naked eye, was virtually impossible – hence the unruly behaviour from a section of the spectators. However, the presence of the mounted police got things back under control before the seventh race.Despite the controversial result, one must congratulate apprentice RS Bhati for persevering with his mount Glorious Leaps (Lucifer Sam-Perfect Rhythm) from a seemingly improbable position as Nikhil Naidu and Sheer Force made a bee line for the winning post.

The afternoon commenced with Shafiq Khan-trained Beatrix (Decado-Brilliance) doing an encore despite the penalty she incurred for her last victory during the monsoon season. Jockey DS Deora made every post of the mile race for the Bollywood Dreams Handicap a winning one.

Much fancied Ruby Cube ( Samidd-Su Doku) lived up to her billing to hand Hindu Singh his first winner of the day. Like in the rear of the small field of five (Othello had planted), Ruby Cube moved well after a reminder to sail past front-runners Gaurish and Lumenac.

Arti Doctor-trained Speed Force (Mull Of Kintyre-My Pension) won the Andreno Handicap – a No Whip race – with apprentice RS Bhati astride. It was once again Nikhil Naidu who played second fiddle as his mount Marigold faded out to the runner-up berth after raising the hopes of her backers in the straight. The filly Moskova finished a close third and is one for the notebook.

The debacle of 2000 Guineas hopeful Jaivant at the hands of Bath-trained Gold Bond came as a bit of a rude shock for his followers. The colt Jaivant was in a box seat till the top of the straight while Bojangles called the shots. When asked for an effort by jockey C. Alford, his response was not as sprightly as one would have expected from the winner of the Calcutta Million. The temperamental five-year-old Gold Bond (Dean’s Kitten-Sharatila) decided that it was his day and he galloped resolutely to a half-length triumph.

Trainer Arti Doctor completed a brace when she brought the curtain down with well-prepared Communique (Air Support-Cocktail Circuit) to hand jockey Christopher Alford his first win of the season. It was vintage Alford as he stole a march over his rivals along the rails to peg back Modification and Avebury.
