ANNUAL BREEDING STATISTICS 2018-19 - PART 5
By Major Srinivas Nargolkar (Retd.) | 19 Nov 2019 |
The complete statistics published by Stud Book Authority of India contains many tables. The four most significant ones have each been covered in individual articles. This is the final article of the series and it includes some of the other tables, a few of them quantitative rather than qualitative.
Champion Sire 2018-19 - Number of Winners
| Rank | Sire (Pedigree) | Standing/ Stood At | Rank Last Five Years |

| 5 | Multidimensional[IRE] (b 2003 Danehill - Sacred Song by Diesis) | Usha | 2-5-7-4-10 | 54 |
Note:- In the above table (and others below), 'N' indicates that the stallion was not at stud in India.
Champion Sire 2018-19 - Number of Wins
| Rank | Sire (Pedigree) | Standing/ Stood At | Rank Last Five Years |
Number of Wins |
| 1 | Phoenix Tower[USA] (b 2004, Chester House - Bionic by Zafonic) | Manjri | 1-1-3-4-14 | 110 |
| 2 | Multidimensional[IRE] (b 2003 Danehill - Sacred Song by Diesis) | Usha | 2-6-6-5-10 | 98 |
| 3 | Excellent Art[GB] (b 2004 Pivotal - Obsessive by Seeking The Gold) | Poonawalla | 3-N-N-N-N | 97 |
| 4 | Arazan[IRE] (b 2006, Anabaa - Asmara by Lear Fan) | Poonawalla | 12-4-5-15-N | 96 |
| 5 | Varenar[FR] (ch 2006, Rock of Gibraltar - Visor by Mr. Prospector) | Equus | 5-17-15-x-N | 85 |
Note:- In the above table (and others below), 'x' indicates that the stallion did not feature in Top 50.
The two tables above are complementary to each other. The same five stallions occupy the top positions in both of them this year but the inter se order is different. Phoenix Tower had a double hat-trick, topping both of them for the third year running. He is also the only stallion in the country to have never been out of the top five in these tables for the last five years. He has sired an Indian Derby winner in Rochester but by and large his progeny is at its best around a mile. Varenar's first crop was a disappointing for a horse who had beaten Goldikova. Since then, he has been consistently getting plenty of winners -- albeit at lower levels -- and this is the first year he has had a top five finish. With two new stallions reaching Equus Stud and a dodgy back, Varenar has moved away from his first home. This is the first time since 2000-2001 that only one stallion has crossed the three-figure mark. Usually there are more centurions. In 2009-10 and 2010-11, eight stallions got a 'ton'.
Champion Sire 2018-19 - AE Index
| Rank | Sire (Pedigree) | Standing/ Stood At | Rank Last Five Years |
AE Index |
| 1 | Multidimensional[IRE] (b 2003 Danehill - Sacred Song by Diesis) | Usha | 6-1-1-5-1 | 2.22 |
| 2 | Excellent Art[GB] (b 2004 Pivotal - Obsessive by Seeking The Gold) | Poonawalla | 1-7-N-N-N | 2.17 |
| 3 | Gusto[GB] (b 2009, Oasis Dream - Pickle by Piccolo) | Bishan | 12-N-N-N-N | 2.09 |
| 4 | Ikhtyar[IRE] (b 2000, Unfuwain - Sabria by Miswaki) | Nanoli | x-5-40-34-37 | 1.77 |
| 5 | Saamidd[GB] (b 2008, Street Cry - Aryaamm by Kingmambo) | Hazara | x-N-N-N-N | 1.70 |
Two Champion Sires occupy the top two places in the table above and it is nice to see two young stallions -- Gusto and Saamidd -- rubbing shoulders with them after just two crops. Gusto stands at a small nursery in Punjab, has had just two very small crops and has already produced a Classic winner. He has been quite a revelation and comes across as a real value for money stallion. Ikhtyar was put out of stud in December 2014. At that time, his best 'get' -- Serjeant At Arms -- had not even raced. Serjeant At Arms was one of Ikhtyar's very few runners during the year and his two good wins enabled his sire to end with a healthy AE Index.

Usha | 7-10-2-3-3 | 69 | 33 | 48 | Rs. 3,96,72,489 |
Note:- None of the above five stallions is alive today.
Throughout the last decade, the top two positions in this table have been reserved for Razeen and Placerville; except in 2016, when Steinbeck was the runner-up to his senior barn-mate Razeen. This was Placerville's third successive title and fifth overall. He is still three short of Razeen's tally of eight. China Visit had his best finish ever while Burden of Proof secured his fifth consecutive top five spot. The much underrated Steinbeck also returned in the top five after a couple of years in lower rungs.
Champion Juvenile Sire 2018-19
(Decided by stakes won)
| Rank | Maternal Grandsire (Pedigree) | Standing At | Rank Last Five Years |
Starters | Winners | Wins | Stakes |
| 1 | Arazan[IRE], b 2006 (Anabaa - Asmara by Lear Fan) |
Poonawalla | 11-11-2-3-N | 61 | 29 | 53 | Rs.6,21,97,293 |
| 2 | Air Support[USA], b 2008 (Smart Strike - Gaze by Danzig) |
Kunigal | 6-N-N-N-N | 32 | 14 | 27 | Rs.3,18,34,447 |
| 3 | Saamidd[GB], b 2008 (Street Cry - Aryaamm by Kingmambo) |
Hazara | 17-N-N-N-N | 36 | 17 | 28 | Rs.2,38,23,923 |
| 4 | Win Legend[JPN], b 2003 (Sunday Silence - Shinko Nobby by Nashwan) |
Dashmesh | 2-10-8-10-5 | 31 | 13 | 22 | Rs.1,93,00,923 |
| 5 | Corporate Jungle[USA], dk b/br 2008 (Giant's Causeway - Lady Carson by Carson City) |
Hazara | N-N-N-N-N | 34 | 9 | 13 | Rs.1,56,33,220 |
Arazan finished a distance ahead of his rivals in this table. Whenever he has had a large juvenile crop, Arazan has finished in the top five. Four times in the last decade, the Champion Juvenile Sire has gone on to win the Overall Champion Sire crown the following year. What is needed a good-sized follow-up crop. Win Legend has 47 foals in 2017 crop, Air Support 42 and Arazan 34 while the low numbers of Corporate Jungle (25) and Saamidd (16) prevents the Hazara duo from contesting the big prize..
PAST THE POST
In an earlier article, a suggestion had been made that we should have a Broodmare of the Year award in India. It is not known if the suggestion has fallen on receptive ears and if any wheels have started to move. The parameters for such an award need to be carefully worked out.
In absence of such parameters, the award can become an 'emotional' one. And, certainly it is only emotions with which this column puts forward the name of Psychic Light, the dam of South India Derby winner Psychic Force. Psychic Light, a daughter of Indian Derby winner Psychic Flame, was born blind. She has been at stud for ten years now, has produced five live foals of which four are winners and the fifth is a two year-old filly in training. In India, it is doubtful if there is another instance of a blind mare producing a Derby winner !
