GRAND ACCORD DROPS A BOMBSHELL

By Mahendra Mallya | 15 Dec 2019 | MUMBAI

Trainer Karthik Ganapathy leading Grand Accord (N S Parmar Up), winner of The A C Ardeshir Trophy (Gr.3)

The uncertainties of racing came forth at the cost of followers of form and most of the fancied lot took a severe beating through the day. The feature event of the day - The AC Ardeshir Trophy (Gr3) was bagged by the least fancied Grand Accord (Dream Ahead - Glebe Queen, Hazara Stud) beating a competitive bunch and leaving the followers of form stunned. Both the Super Jackpot and Jackpot pools were carried forward as well.

Costa Brava garnered the maximum support with La Rondine and Bronx having a good share of the betting pie. Raees and Grand Accord had scant support. Costa Brava shot into the lead soon on start with La Rondine and Raees close behind, followed by the two long-shots.

Costa Brava led them into the straight with La Rondine looming large on the outside. Bronx failed to reproduce that scorching turn of foot he displayed in Pune and was out of the equation as the race came to a boil. La Rondine got the measure of Costa Brava approaching the distance post and soon sped past the favourite. Grand Accord started to make his presence felt in the final furlong and was inching closer to La Rondine. Jockey Bhawani Singh rode his heart out and got the Karthik trainee to get going in the last 100 meters to just about put his neck in front at the right time to spoil La Rondine's party. That the punters all round were stunned would be an understatement. The 15 to one shot surprised the majority while picking up his sixth career win and bagging the AC Ardeshir Trophy (Gr3) in a keen finish.

Karthik had saddled Star Comrade (Rebuttal - Celtic Memories, Hazara Stud) another long-shot earlier in the day. This one was at even higher odds   and Star Comrade went for it from the word go. Apprentice jockey A Prakash got off to a good start with Star Comrade and galloped at a steady pace. Khartoum was up next with Armaity and Till End of Time followed by Princess Annabel. The last named was the second favourite, but disappointed a large following, failing to raise a gallop at any stage.

Star Comrade entered the straight full of running and had a slender lead as well. Till End of Time got past Khartoum and appeared to gain on the leader. However, his challenge fizzled out just as soon and he failed to make any impact. Hot favourite Armaity had to switch lanes for clear passage and that took a couple of strides in doing so. Star Comrade by then had smothered Till End of Time and was making his way to the wire. Armaity gathered momentum in the final furlong but had a lot of ground to cover. She arrived with a good burst, but was a tad too late. Star Comrade held on by just under a length to cause a flutter while claiming the Kheem Singh Gold Cup. Armaity will live to fight another day.

Rehanullah Khan trained Sharareh (Varenar - Pointilist, Equus Stud) was another fluke that floored the punters in the Shantidas Askuran Trophy. At least the filly had winning form coming into this one unlike the Karthik pair. King Khalil darted into the lead and galloped on once they entered the straight. Between The Waters, Kilkarry Bridge and Flaming Martini set about to chase down the leader. While the other two could not match up, Sharareh with Parmar up in the saddle started to accelerate well. He caught up with King Khalil in the final furlong; the pair fought out all the way to the post with Sharareh surging ahead a few strides from the winning post to score a second win within a week. Apprentice jockey Vinod failed to add the finishing touches although King Khalil went down fighting all the way down to the wire. Sharareh has shown tremendous improvement this season and is in great heart. Kilkarry Bridge perhaps needed this run to sharpen up and is one to note. Flaming Martini clearly could not sustain giving weight all around.

Two of trainer Pesi Shroff's wards Sea The Dream and Notoriety attracted almost equal betting in the Ahmdbhoy Trophy in a small field of six runners. The race turned true to the trends as the slightly more fancied Sea The Dream (See The Stars - Navajo Dream, Equus Stud) held off Notoriety by a length to clinch the issue.

Notoriety went into the lead soon on star with Fanfare and See The Dream a couple of lengths behind, followed by Power of Thor, Justified and Gold Medalist close behind.

Sea The Dream made an early move and got alongside \notoriety at the turn and this pair were abreast as they straightened up for home. Sea The Dream wrested the initiative and jockey Neeraj Rawal got past Notoriety early in the homestretch. Not one to give up easily, Notoriety stuck by Sea The Dream, while the rest didn't seem to be going anywhere. Sea The Dream was hard ridden all through and managed to maintain the upper hand all through the straight to eventually get home with a length to spare. Notoriety was forced to change course as jockey Neeraj deftly had Sea The Dream too close for comfort, leaving  very little room for Notoriety to squeeze through should she pick up speed again. Notoriety had to switch lanes but by then Sea The Dream had all but sealed the issue. Power of Thor did well to beat the other youngsters for the third place.

Shroff lead-in a second winner in Saskawa (Kingda Ka - Jahanara, Nanoli Stud) a firm favourite and the most steady bet of the day. Sasakwa was not too far behind Untitled who lead right from the start. Jockey Leigh Roche was quick on the button as they wheeled round the corner and confronted the leader. Untitled was fighting a losing battle and soon Sasakwa surged ahead and then galloped on strongly to win with a measure of comfort. Despacito improved in the straight to finish second a good two and half lengths behind Sasakwa. Untitled saved the place money, finishing third well ahead of Saltbae.

Ebony (Varenar - Mandara, Equus Stud) built on her sublime form and scored an impressive win to clinch the Jehangir Dubash Trophy from Wild Fire with a smooth late run. Wild Fire did most things right and led the field home. She shaped well too until midway down the straight which was when Ebony started to flex her muscles. The Altamash trainee arrived at a cracking pace with the same fluent gallop she has shown in recent times and when she appeared on the scene, Wild Fire looked in trouble. Wild Fire fought on well though, but Ebony had enough steam to douse Wild Fire in the final few strides. Ebony may have won by just a neck, but she never really had to toil too hard. Cezanne did well to finish in the money.

Angels Harmony (Varenar - Aliwiyya, Equus Stud) scored a pleasing win in the day's opener. It was all smooth sailing for the Altaf Hussain trained mare as she took off at a good pace and finished on impressively to win it start to finish without giving her rivals even a semblance of chance. The fight was on only for the minor slots where Saffron flower got past Cray Cray for the runner-up berth. The manner of victory suggests that Angels Harmony could capitalise on her good form and notch up another win or two this season.

The last race of the day too saw another long-shot in Palomar (Surfrider - Leit Motif, Ruia Stud) who charged in from the mid-bunch to storm past the front runners in the last furlong and half. Slam Dunk retired after leading them into the straight and Westros assumed charge briefly. Stick To The Plan made an attempted to sneak through the rails, but cold not quicken. It was Palomar who burst on to the scene and galloped full of steam to surge past and build a wining lead in quick time. Oui Sauvage was the best of the beaten lot and finished on at a good tempo to finish a notable second. Anatevka ran on to finish in the money ahead of Odessa.

For the professionals, trainers Pesi Shroff, Karthik Ganapathy and Altamash Ahemd saddled a double each, while jockeys Neeraj Rawal and NS Parmar scored a double each.
