ROSINA LIFTS CALCUTTA OAKS IN GREAT STYLE

By Epsom Ace | 21 Dec 2019 | KOLKATA

Mr Joydeep Datta Gupta & trainer Bharath Singh leading Rosina (Y S Srinath Up), winner of The Calcutta Oaks (Gr.3)

It was ‘run for the roses’ for trainer Bharath Singh’s Rosina who showed a clean pair of heels to her five rivals to lift Calcutta Oaks at RCTC on Saturday, that too after a tardy beginning which saw her lose about four lengths at the start. With jockey Y Srinath in the saddle, the filly by new stallion Speaking of Which out of the well-performed mare Roses In Bloom, spared two-and-half lengths to Shivalik Sight. The public choice Izzy failed to stay the trip and  finished a lacklustre fifth. Outstation challenger Roll Call had the misfortune of being withdrawn after playing up at the starting stalls. The filly’s final entry fee was forfeited.

The Deepak Khaitan Memorial Gold Cup went Star Superior’s way after a keen tussle with Adjudicate from the distance post. Jockey Sandesh rode an overconfident race on the latter, other than which the tables may have been turned. After streaking two lengths clear at the top of the straight, Sandesh had no business to look back as if toying with his powerful rival. Star Superior was under the stick from the top of the straight while Sandesh’s mount was galloping smoothly. He paid the price for overconfidence.

RCTC stand members, owners and regulars were severely inconvenienced as the entire parking area was allotted to the police personnel on the Police Commissioners Cup day. It was unfortunate that the high-handedness of some of the parking attendants left a sour taste in the mouth. One would request the authorities to allot an area for parking to such regular bonafide visitors at the designated area in the future.

The Police Commissioner’s Cup saw apprentice Tejeshwar at his best as he guided home Javed Khan-trained Vice Admiral (Lord Admiral-Go Out Backwards) to a thrilling victory over Surf Romance. Fashionably bred Nandish (Multidimensional-Silken Star) was piloted to a facile victory in the mile race for the Police Martyrs Cup. Public choice Topnotch (Top Class – Elzaam) won the Kolkata Mounted Police Cup by the proverbial whisker from rank outsider Joss while Aquaracer was a close flying third.

Trainer Vijay Singh had three runners in the Calcutta Juvenile Stakes – the favourite Daring Heart (2/1), Copacabana (4/1) and the 6/1 shot Court Jester. It was the last named with Sandesh in the saddle who collared Fenicia Mist and drew away from the field. The colt is by Net Whizz out of Matilda.

On an afternoon of outsiders, it was not surprising that the last race of the day – The Eagle Pines Handicap – it was not surprising that Daniel David’s seven-year-old Prince Of Heart came good after finishing 9th, last and 9th in his three outings this season. Outstation jockey RN Darshan did the honours. Those in the know had a touch at the totalisator to make it a happy ending for them.
