ATTORNEY GENERAL WINS STEWARDS CUP

By Ikram Khan | 28 Dec 2019 | BANGALORE

Mr Rajan Aggarwal & trainer K Pradeep Annaiah leading Attorney General (YS Srinath Up), winner of The Stewards Cup

Two mounts of Chetan Kalay floored the followers of form from which they never could recover and returned home with a big hole in the pocket. Orogenesis from Prasanna Kumar's yard was fancied most in the lower division of the Amathos Plate run over 1100 metres. The favourite was touted a good bet and soon the connections went bang-bang in the betting ring. The Padmanabhan schooled Temple Dancer who opened the favourite was offered at (7/2) soon after the supporters of Orogenesis placed big bets. To the delight of the bookies who were back this week, the two failed in their mission to deliver the goods. Temple Dancer failed to jump level from the gates and thus was out of it while Orogenesis met a tartar in Radiant Beauty who produced a good gallop in the hands of apprentice Chetan Gowda to score.

Next in the Agumbe Plate run over a sprint, Chetan Kalay was listed to partner the Azhar Ali schooled Daring Sweetheart. The three year-old filly who had failed to make the frame in her two earlier starts was tipped a `moral certainty' by the stable connections. In an attempt to quickly recover the lost money on Orogenesis, the supporters of Kalay and Azhar Ali went big on Daring Sweetheart. Money came pouring in and to the surprise of most pundits in the game, the Azhar Ali ward closed (70/100).  All that the heavily-backed `Sweetheart' did was take tons of money down the drain. The ten to one long shot Show Girl piloted by Vaibhav won the event in a close finish from Kanthaka who in his attempt to make every post a winning one lost out close home. Turf Prospector finished third ahead of `Sweetheart' who failed to even save place money.

The opening event for juveniles run over a sprint saw the well-prepared Forest Flame from trainer Sulaiman Attaollhi's yard justify the big support she garnered in the betting ring. The fashionably bred youngster from the famed Poonawalla Stud Farm appears a goodtype and her progress in the months ahead will evoke interest. Golden Oaks from Padmanabhan's yard finished second ahead of Drusila while Stone House made the frame.

A facile last start winner Bernardini was rightly fancied to provide an encore in the Kunigal Stud Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. The favourite piloted by Umesh pulled the plug and blew the fuse on his 11 rivals winning without unduly being extended by a widening margin of 8.5 lengths. On the strength of this superb effort, this Ghatala ward is certain to complete a hat-trick of wins when saddled next.

Colonel Harty fancied strongly in place gained the runner-up berth ahead of Excellent Sorrento. The Ganapathy schooled Mighty Red and Crack Of Dawn from the stables of Padmanabhan were fancied most in the S Rangarajan Memorial Trophy run over 2000M. The former who ended the favourite streaked ahead while negotiating the final curve and held on to score from Crack Of Dawn. Colm O'Donoghue judged the pace to a nicety in the event and this proved decisive at end. Game Changer finished third ahead of Ozark.

After failing to justify favouritism in his last essay, Whizzo from trainer Azhar Ali's yard who had benefitted most with the run under his belt made ample amends in the Native Chieftan Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. The favourite piloted by Umesh who recorded a popular double proved too good, assuming command at the distance post before donkey-licking his nine rivals in the final furlong.

Hidden Soldier edged out Dreams United by the shortest of margins to take the runner-up berth while last start winner Zhu Zhu Zest who also was strongly fancied could only finish fourth.

Apprentice jockey J H Arul who lost out on Zhu Zhu Zest came good on the lesser fancied Sandarina who made every post a winning one in the concluding event, the lower division of the Amathos Plate. The on-money favourite Dragon Mountain despite being favourably placed at the top of the straight failed to match strides with the winner and had to rest content with the runner-up spot. Dallas finished third ahead of Sadaqat.
