Compared to the other premier racing centres, Bangalore winter season has provided punters a reason to smile, good number of fancied horses justifying favouritism on most racing days at the Bangalore Turf Club. This happened again on Saturday, five firm favourites and one well supported second choice, Foi Et Amour from trainer Padmanabhan’s yard winning the Makara Sankrantri Trophy run over a mile in a pulsating finish from the Arjun Manglokar- trained Cavaliere.

The first four events saw the public choices romp home to the delight of the followers of form. Satish Narredu schooled, Born Queen proved too good in the opening event for juveniles. The winner was back to the exclusion of her seven rivals and in the hands of Yash Narredu bolted in to the delight of the Narredu camp. Shanaey from the stables of Prithviraj finished second ahead of Flamingo Road while Capable from the stables of Nithyanand made the frame.

In the next event, the lower division of the Kalhatti Falls Plate, Asgardia from trainer Sulaiman Attaollahi’s yard was the piping hot favourite and the leading pro Traver Patel didn’t really need to move a muscle to score in this moderate set. Chameleons Image gained the runner-up birth ahead of Southern power.
The topweighted Propine was backed down from (3/1) to (6/4) in the Srirangapatna Plate and the Kishan Thomas ward confidently piloted by John produced a sparkling gallop to cruise home a deserving winner. Red Galileo finished second ahead of Premier Premises while Songkran came home fourth.

John next had it easy on the half-money favourite, Gin Daisy in the Shivaganga Falls Plate. The winner who had twice finished second from her to earlier starts this season had no opposition worthy of mention, winning with a great degree of comfort from Perfect King and Bella Mamma. Gin Daisy on the strength of this performance is certain to provide an encore when saddled next.

Last start winner, Cuban Pete came up tops in the Bangalore City Police Commissioner Trophy, the plum event run over a sprint. The winner piloted by Akshay Kumar produced a good turn of foot in the final furlong to snuff out the challenge of the Psychic Warrior. Commodus nosed out the favourite Ice Floe to save money in place. It was clear that Ice Floe found the sprint trip sharp while Cuban Pete enjoyed the six furlongs exercise.

Making an appearance after his impressive mock race in the company of his illustrious stablemate War Hammer before the start of the season, Knotty Oak was fancied most in the upper division of the Kalhatti Falls Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. The public choice hit the front the moment the nine runners came under the starter’s flag and without unduly being extended cantered home to the delight of the railbirds. Second in demand at the betting ring, Legendary Princess partnered by Scottish pro David Allan who booted home Foi Et Amour, expectedly followed the winner home while Augustina who was strongly fancied in place by the Irfan Ghatala made sure that her camp followers returned home with many pink sacks full.
