MULTIFACETED PROVES TOO GOOD IN SPRINTERS TRIAL

By Ikram Khan | 07 Feb 2020 | BANGALORE

Trainer Darius Byramji leading Multifaceted (Suraj Narredu Up), winner of The Sprinters Trial Stakes (Gr.3)

Fresh from their spectacular Indian Derby success at Mahalaxmi on Sunday, champion trainer Prasanna Kumar and top gun Suraj Narredu recorded a double on Friday. So did leading pro Trevor Patel, on a day the punters threw a couple of good punches on the bookies, four overwhelming favourites and two well supported second choices romping home in the eight-event card.

Prasanna first struck through the second in demand at the betting ring, Indian Empress in the upper division of the Bharachukki Plate run over a sprint. The winner piloted by John proved too good for her 10 rivals including the favourite Skyfire who on the strength of his facile victory in his last essay was fancied most. Indian Empress won by a widening margin of five lengths from Skyfire, who found the winner too hot to handle. Singhsaab surprised many finishing third ahead of Win all.

In the lower division of the event, Harbour Sunrise from Prasanna's yard garnered maximum support. The public choice who had let down her supporters a couple of times earlier made ample amends in the hands of Trevor Patel, assuming command at the distance post before putting the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong. Donna Bella from Irfan Ghatala's yard gained the runner-up berth ahead of Sandarina, who in her attempt to make every post a winning one found the first two, much superior. Now that Harbour Sunrise has broken ice she is set to provide an encore when saddled next.
Suraj Narredu had it easy on the Narayan Gowda-trained Areca Angel in the Davangere Plate run over a sprint. After tracking Dersert Gilt for most part of the trip, Suraj alerted the topweighted fancied contestant and the Narayan Gowda ward shot ahead to cruise home in effortless style. It will again pay to follow Areca Legend on the strength of this performance taking into account that the five-year-old mare is in fine nick. Perfect King from Sharath Kumar's yard did well to finish second ahead of She's Stylish while Jai Vikram made the board.

Astride another favourite Multifaceted in the Sprinters Trial Stakes, the plum event, Suraj again didn't really need to move a muscle, the even-money favourite Multifaceted from Darius Byramji's yard donkey-licking his nine rivals from the word go. Multifaceted on the strength of this performance is certain to start favourite in the Sprinters Cup at Mysore later this month and he will be the one to beat in the race for the best sprinter crown. Knotty Ash edged out Mauritania to gain the second spot while Tutankhamun caught the eye while finishing fourth and is one for the note book.

After the favourite Mrs Thatcher from Padmanabhan's yard was withdrawn, Vernesco from Azhar Ali's yard and Up Front from the stables of Irfan Ghatala topped the betting board before the former was installed the first favourite in the third division of the Forever Elegance Plate run over a sprint. The public choice piloted by John flopped in his effort to make a race of it. And it was Up Front who waltzed to victory in the hands of the leading apprentice Shamaz Shareef. Iconic Princess from Sulaiman Attaollahi's yard finished second ahead of Command Post, a `nose' separating them at the wire while Vernesco only managed to get into the frame.

The first division of the event was claimed by another top fancy Queen Of Sands from trainer Imtiaz Khan's yard who justified her top billing with a measure of comfort. It was good to see T S Jodha in the winners' circle after a long while at this centre. The struggling `Knight' produced a copybook effort on the winner. Torosanto finished a game second ahead of Alberto who is struggling to justify his bloodline.

The second division of the event saw the Pradeep Annaiah-trained The Preacher drop the biggest bombshell making every post a winning one in the hands of lesserlight Mubarak. The rankoutsider paid a handsome dividend of Rs, 1,035 on a tenner at the tote window. The favourite Heavenly Angel from Lokanath Gowda's yard, who was strongly fancied reared up and fell unseating her rider Darshan  the moment the starter brought the flag down. Blarney Stone edged out Hidden Soldier to gain the second spot while the second in demand at the betting ring, Southern Power lacked the power to match strides with the first three.

The Neil Darashah schooled Violin was a smart winner of the February Plate. The second choice hit the front in the 1100M dash soon after the dozen runners came under the starter's flag and powered through to score in resplendent style. The favourite Code Of Honour from Padmanabhan's yard, it was clear needed this run and will prove to be a different proposition next time out. Welcome Surprise surprised most gaining the runner-up berth after failing to even make the frame in his last three starts this season.
