Trainer Shafiq Khan leading Lady Of Luxury (P S Chouhan Up), winner of The Indian Air Force Cup

Trainer Shafiq Khan's Lady Of Luxury (PS Chouhan up) moved with giant strides in the final furlong to win a blanket finish involving Oak Brook and Incendio, and lift the Indian Air Force Cup at RCTC on Saturday. Held back in the rear of the nine-horse field till while Gaurish and Double Nine called the shots, Chouhan asked the daughter of Varenar out of Oh So Romantic for an effort after heads turned for home and the filly responded magnificently. She was easily travelling the best of the trio.

The Eastern Air Command Cup saw an equally tight finish as Arti Doctor's Simply Soaring (Imran Chisty astride) edged out Excelsior at the wire. The filly by Air Support out of Sabre Dance was kept off the pace while the other fancied runner Excelsior stayed in touch with the front-runners till the top of the straight. She took the shortest route home and may have pulled it of had Simply Soaring not displayed such a brilliant turn of foot. Both Chisty and Chouhan went on to complete a brace each.

Chisty completed his double in the very next race when he coaxed a rousing gallop out of Bharath Singh-trained Solo March (Tazahum-Heroine's Beauty) to bag the Wansfell Handicap. Dakshesh attracted a lotof betting in the ring and he ran a good race but unfortunately burst his blood vessels. Chisty in the meantime gradually improved his position from a outside draw to move into top-gear opposite the grandstand and get the better of Leopard Creek.

Not to be left out of the limelight, PS Chouhan went on to complete his double with Vikash Jaiswal-trained Apalachee (Serious Spender-Aprillia) in the next race of the day. The six-year-old was engaged in a keen tussle with speedy Shimmering Star all the way down the straight and ultimately prevailed over the fast finishing Summerhill and the tiring front-runner. Advait showed a bit of early speed before fading out.

Champion trainer Vijay Singh drew a blank till the fifth race – The Obligado Plate for Maidens. In this race, his three-year-old gelding Supreme Legacy (Speaking of Which-Star Supremacy) outclassed the field over seven furlongs. Jasbir Singh's Pinatubo was installed as the 10-to-7 on favourite but he failed to match strides with Vijay's first timer, on whom Suraj Narredu rode a regulation race. He maintained him in fourth spot behind pace-setting stablemate Huntsman and gave his mount a free rein at the top of the straight. He won as he liked in smart timing.

Suraj however failed to deliver on the favourite Roethke in the seven-furlong race for The Roubaix Handicap. It was Manvendra Singh-trained Kimaya who sprung a bit of a surprise in the hands of apprentice Sujit Kumar Paswan. The filly by Sedgefield out of Saporelli found the field rather weak and was easily travelling the best right through the race. Roethke hung in under pressure and was beaten by a superior horse. Atom finished up a close third.

The handicapper was having a great day till then and capped it with another delightful blanket finish featuring four horses. It was Shafiq Khan-trained Christiana (Burden Of Proof-Strelitzia) who produced an encore  and edged out Storm Front, Happy Returns and Uncrowned King. The frail filly made light work of the top-weight thanks to jockey RS Bhati's fine understanding of his mount. He kept her completely off the pace till 300 metres from home and went hell for leather thereafter, riding her our hands and heels in the final 100 metres.
