CORFE CASTLE WINS SPRINTERS' CUP

By Ikram khan | 29 Feb 2020 | MYSORE

Leading pro Suraj Narredu lost on the most fancied contestant Multifaceted in the Sprinters' Cup before booting home the lesser fancied Bangalore challenger Ambrosio in the Stayers' Cup on eve of the Indian Turf Invitation Cup at Mysuru on Saturday. Multifaceted on the strength of his brilliant earlier effort was considered a `moral certainty' by most racing pundits despite the fact that the best Western India sprinter Iron Age was in the fray. The top two sprinters hit the front and called the shots for most part of the speedy journey before Sandesh astride the Leo D'Silva schooled Corfe Castle packed a punch and the Hyderabad mainhope stormed through to emerge the best sprinter in resplendent style. Mauritania from Padmanabhan's yard gained the runner-up berth ahead of Intense Stylist, while the top two fancied contestants failed to even make the frame. Mention must be made that Multifaceted suffered interference soon after the 10 contestants came under the starter's flag and Suraj did well to hang on the public choice before chasing the leader Iron Age before both ran out of gas even before the race came on a boil, Iron Age finishing last in the field.

The Shroff-trained Sacred Roman partnered by Srinath gained the top billing in the Dr M A M Ramaswamy Stayers Cup. Cosmos from Darius Byramji's yard, who was disappointed with the result of Sprinters' Cup, too had a fair share of his followers, while Ambrosio, who opened at (3/1) was offered at (9/2) before the nine runners came under the starter's flag for the energy sapping 3000 metres on a warm afternoon. The favourite Sacred Roman hit the front and dictated the pace all through the backstretch before Suraj reminded Ambrosio, who looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring, the task ahead and the Sulaiman Attaollahi ward produced a brilliant turf of foot to gallop to fame.
The Arjun Manglorkar-trained Point To Prove finished a creditable second ahead of Raees while Cosmos could only fill the frame.

The Japan Million run over a sprint produced a pulse-pounding finish, the second in demand at the betting ring, Rapunzel from trainer Rakesh's yard and Gold Field from the stables of Surender locked in a ding-dong battle in the final furlong before Rapunzel nailed it in the final stride. Lion from the stables of Michael Eshwer who garnered maximum support in the event was never in the hunt while Brabourne did well to save money in place.

The Satish Narredu-trained Star Sapphire surprised most in the RWITC Million run over a distance of nine furlongs. Hokkaido from Vishal Gaikwad's yard was the firm favourite on the strength of a couple of good efforts in Mumbai, but the top fancy was seen struggling all through the nine furlong journey. Star Sapphire piloted by Yash Narredu produced a sprakling gallop in the final furlong to gain the day ahead of Brown Bess while Star Holiday took the third spot.

A big gamble on the Pradeep Annaiah-trained Lagopus came through in the concluding event, the Delhi Race Club Million run over a sprint. The Altaf Hussain-trained Divine Glory and Lagopus opened joint favourites before money came pouring in on the Pradeep ward and with a confident Imran Khan to guide his fortunes, Lagopus zoomed past Power Of Thea in the final furlong to the delight of the Pradeep supporters, who were `moral' on the winner. Donna Bella manged to save money in place while Divine Glory, it appeared was not in serious contention.

Earlier, the on-money favourite Sherwin from Arjun Manglorkar's yard started the two-day racing carnival on a promising note winning the opening event, the Madras Race Club Million run over a distance of seven furlongs. Allabouther from Sulaiman's ward piloted by Trevor Patel did give Sherwin a scare, a `neck' separating the two at the wire. Code Of Honour grabbed the third spot ahead of Ombudsman while the Mumbai challenger Rubik Star failed to make an impression.

The eight to one shot Subah Ka Tara from trainer Samar Singh's yard won the next event, the Dashmesh Win Legend Million. The winner powerfully piloted by leading pro Srinath stormed ahead at the distance post before gallantly pegging back the belated effort of Cerise Noir. The favourite Bernardini from Irfan Ghatala's yard performed below par and so too Valegro from the stables of Pesi Shroff.
