Mr.S.Ganapathy receiving the Bangalore Winter Million (Gr.3) trophy from Mr.Jayant Shah

The run benefit and the pull in weights enabled favourite Flashy Wings to win the Gr.3 Bangalore Winter Million which featured Saturday’s races. However, the talking point of the races was not the performance of the winner but of those in the also ran category. Trainer Ganapathy has a problem of plenty and evidence of this was the fact that he saddled four progenies of Razeen in the race with three of them only taking part for the benefit of experiencing a race situation. The predicament of not always patronizing the best of the stock under him is something which will always be his worry. Had the jockey of Precede let go off his mount, he could well have upset the favourite but jockey Raja Rao being very seasoned in giving runs, managed to keep him from the safety of finishing among the first three. He was the fastest finishing coming from way behind and was traveling all by himself. Flashy Wings is not a horse bred for sprints and she had lost by a whisker to Sarabande in her last run because she warmed up rather late. Yet again, Flashy Wings was under pressure to be in touch with the front runners but she flew home in the final furlong to get past the front-running Appreciate who had led the field from the start. Jockey Rajendra’s vigorous efforts ensured the victory of Flashy Wings as much as the lack of it ensured the eye-catching run of Precede. Lyocel ran on to be third. Padmanabhan trained Red Eagle heralded his arrival as a horse of significance when he cantered home in the 1400 metres Madhavanagar Plate (Div-I), a race for maiden three-year olds. The son of Placerville, Red Eagle was a prominent second in his last outing over a sprint and now running over a furlong more, he took charge of the proceedings from the start and went away for an effortless win by a widening margin of eight lengths in a good time of 1 minute 26.7 seconds. The timing acquires value when one compares it with that of a seasoned performer like Just Brave who timed 1.27.07 seconds in the highest class after being fully ridden out. The lower division of the race went the way of Red Apache who was left with no worthwhile opposition to tackle as Secret Wish proved no match. Royal Recreation gave jockey Prakash an arm-chair ride to victory in the 1200 metres Kumta Plate. The drifting odds on Mountain Flame was a clear give away and Royal Recreation had things his way from the time the start was given. There was inspired support for Golden Edge who was a tame third behind Touching Touching. The two market fancies Alvinia and Rain God both failed to oblige with long shot Wonder Splendour winning in the 1600 metres Amazing Grey Plate. Alvinia was shaping to record an encore but the finishing burst of Wonder Splendour floored the second favourite. Andaluz who had not lived up to expectations thus far, made amends, swamping the opposition with a start to finish dash. Laughing Buddha was a faraway second ahead of Musical Signature. Linette was fancied to win the 1400 metres RWITC Cup but the fast pace set by Corsican Gal appeared to suit Just Brave more than the favourite. Just Brave who was at the rear of the field for most part of the journey, came through with a big run down the centre in the final furlong to snuff out of the challenge of Linette. In the day’s other action, Whisper City recorded an encore, comfortably staving off the challenge of Cellisima and Amazing Wrrior. Caramel ran a poor race.
