The sparingly raced Padmanabhan trainee Aashirwaad had it easy in the 1600 metres Nilgiris Cup, a race for horses rated 30 to 45, which highlighted the programme on Friday. Though there were doubts about the four-year old gelding getting the mile long trip, Aashirwaad gave no anxious moments to his supporters as he checked in well clear of his opponents, with Awesome Royal being the only realistic challenger. Aashirwaad tended to pull himself to the front at around the final bend but there was no doubting his superiority. Jockey Srinath, who rode Aashirwaad, was in his elements as he consolidated his lead in the jockey's table, booting home three other winners. He was astride the winners in both the divisions of the Savadatti Plate. In the upper division, the daughter of Glory of Dancer, Le Reve proved too good for the opposition, with the well supported Bold Blaze finding foot when the race was in the safe keeping of the front-runner. Satish Narredu trained Super Speed gave a drubbing to his opponents which included the well supported She’s A Melody in the lower division. Srinath piloted another winner through Mount Royale where stablemate Equally Good was slightly better fancied in the betting. Equally Good bolted to the front from the word 'go' but failed to sustain and slackened in the final furlong. Mount Royale pounced on him and went away for a facile win. Jockey C Krishnan, who lost the use of the whip for the entire season for four whip-related offenses a month ago, had the consolation of booting home a winner through Global Agenda who managed to stave off the challenge of Rosalinee and Choice Is Blue. Though Krishnan’s effectiveness has been blunted without the aid of the whip, the win should boost his morale. Apollo Crown brought off a coup when winning the 1400 metres Gumbaz Cup at nourishing odds at the expense of Royal Dazzle and favourite Tamoses who was never in the hunt. Money poured in the direction of Caithraratha who had only past form to recommend his credentials. Big Dream eased off in the betting ring, suggesting the possibility of the favourite bolting in. But in the event, both the market fancies faded out, with Copper Sky getting up just in time to nose out Just Perfect. Caithraratha had all the chances but packed up like a pricked balloon after leading the field into the homestretch.
