GODSPEED

By Ishaan Shroff | 11 Jun 2020 | MUMBAI

Godspeed (Multidimensional - Almandine) was born in 2011 at the Usha Stud Farm. She was one of the last horses left in their ring at the 2013 RWITC Annual Auction Sale of two-year-olds in Pune and was selected by Malesh Narredu who would then go on to train her.  My father, Ram Shroff, my uncle, Raj Shroff and their friend Mr. Sameer Tapia owned her in partnership.

Godspeeds racing career began on 6th April 2014 in the Karl Umrigar Trophy at the Mahalaxmi racecourse, where she won comfortably by 4 lengths showing the racing fraternity her pure class and tremendous potential.  Three weeks later she won again pulling up by 3.5 lengths with Suraj Narredu in the saddle.

The owners and trainer then decided to step it up and take her to Bangalore for the Fillies Championship Stakes, Gr.1 where she came a credible 3rd to Maisha after not having the smoothest of runs.

Godspeed was back to her winning ways in her next start and scored over Bold Majesty in The Bangalore Summer Million, Gr.3 with her trademark start-to-finish style of running.

She then travelled to Hyderabad and displayed a gritty performance in The Deccan Bookmakers Fillies Championship Stakes, Gr.3 beating Culebra.

She developed some complications on her return to Mumbai after her hectic travel schedule and it was discovered she had a choking problem that was treated by Dr. Hasneyn Mirza.

Her next target was the Indian 1000 Guineas, Gr.1. Mumbai experienced unexpected rains in early December of 2014 that caused the postponement of the race. This delay worked in favour of the filly and thanks to the great care of trainer, Malesh Narredu, Godspeed was destined for success.

The New Hope 1000 Guineas, Gr.1 finally took place on 18th December 2014. Maisha was the firm favorite and it seemed be a one-horse race going by the betting on her.

Both Godspeed and Maisha were well positioned to make a move around the bend and fought it out to the very end.  Godspeed displayed tremendous heart and her will to win along with great riding by Suraj Narredu led to an incredible victory.

Her racing career ended in March 2015 with a fine record of 5 wins from 8 starts. Godspeed retired to stud and proved to be a success as broodmare too. Her very first foal, California is already a Gr.3 winner and she has 2 more promising foals to come.

Unfortunately, Godspeed lost her life to laminitis on June 7th 2020 despite all the efforts made at the farm. The cyclone and ongoing pandemic caused many problems and prevented expert vets from coming to treat her.

I dedicate this article to her memory, as she was very dear to me. Whenever I visited her at the stables as a kid I would pet her, feed her and always had a great time thanks to her loving nature.

She was the toughest horse with the biggest heart and a fighter to the very end. Thank you for all the amazing memories you gave us Godspeed, love you forever !
