Diomedes pulls it off

By Sharan Kumar | 21 Jan 2006 | BANGALORE

Diomedes (Appu up), winner of the F.K.Irani Memorial Cup, trainer Mr.Darius Byramji

Moody customer Diomedes exploited the pull in weights to win the 1200 metres F.K. Irani Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 40 and above, the highlight of Saturday’s races. Jockey Appu took Diomedes to the front from the outside draw and the son of Royal Kingdom lasted out rather comfortably. Florican who was expected to have a say at the finish, ran detached last till the final turn but flew home on the wide outside to be a close fourth. The weights favoured Diomedes and Florican and they were the ones expected to dominate in the competitive field of 12 runners. Crown Secret who had run a fair second last time out and who appeared to be in a good condition was also strongly supported. In the event, Diomedes who runs best when he is races freely in front, dictated a fast pace and then thwarted off the challenge of Crown Secret before settling the issue. Linette flew home along with Florican and all these runners were clocked in a photo-finish. Florican, who had run in almost identical fashion last time out, had won as he was taking on modest opposition. Ministrel Heights ran poorly he might be a force to reckon with after some load shedding. Jockey Srinath was in his elements, driving home a treble through Alvinia, Royal Brackla and Steelium. Alvinia who was running after a long lay off, proved too good for the opposition in the 1400 metres Ullal Beach Plate (Div I), overhauling the front-running Beyond Limits close home. Fancied Shining Example was never in the hunt and lost the third spot to Green Park who finished with a flourish. Cold War was left to tackle a mediocre opposition in the lower division and he beat his only nearest contestant Algebra with a fair degree of ease. There was strong support for Sunlight King who has never run true to public expectations and once again, the Faraz Arshad ward let down badly. However, another unreliable customer Royal Brackla who broke off level from the gates won in the hands of Srinath quite capably. Rain God had all the chances but he beat all except the eventual winner. There was drama preceding the win of Steelium. The Dominic trainee had run behind Florican in his last appearance in the Bangalore Summer Season and the latter had landed himself in the highest class. As such Steelium was expected to have it easy. Steelium broke loose when being led to the starting gates but was caught before much damage could be done. There was a request for the horse to be withdrawn under the circumstances but the vets who checked the horse, certified it fit to race. In the confusion, top-weighted Cilldara came in for spirited betting but there was no drama in the race itself as Steelium went away from his nearest challenger to win as he pleased. There was inspired betting on Loknath trained Sparklette but the favourite found foot when the race was in the safe keeping of Spring Fair. The lack of strong preparatory gallop went against the favourite. First-timer Bons Amis was well backed but the four-year old gelding 'bled' and finished down the field. In a nail-biting finish, Master Yoda just about held on to beat Hollywood Girl in the race meant for juveniles. In the day’s other action, Emilio managed to thwart the bid of Most Convincing.
