MYSTIC BAY WINS P D BOLTON TROPHY

By Mahendra Mallya | 11 Dec 2020 | MUMBAI

Trainer M Narredu leading Mystic Bay (P Trevor Up), winner of The P D Bolton Trophy

Malesh Narredu trained Mystic Bay (Leitir Mor – Memory Boy, Poonawalla Stud) showed what a run benefit can do as he blasted his opponents to score a facile victory claiming the P D Bolton Trophy the feature event of the day. Mystic Bay had to work his way around initially as Wild Fire dashed to the front at a quick early pace. Wild Fire was followed closely by Headway, Golden Guest and Impala, with Mystic Bay on the tail of the quartet.

Wild Fire struggled to keep up, while Headway could not find the necessary acceleration. Both petered out early. Mystic Bay, with Trevor in the saddle, didn’t wait too long and pounced on the front runners with an effective gallop. The moment he made his surge, it was clear that he had it covered. He dashed to the front and within strides he was speeding away from the rest. He looked the winner a furlong from home and was eased up yet scoring by a margin two and half lengths. Golden Guest ran on to take the runner up berth, while Sharareh improved well from the rear to take the third spot.

Alluring Silver (Leitir Mor – Personal Allure, Poonawalla Stud) provided an easy ride to jockey Suraj Narredu as he proved far too superior to her rivals.  The Shroff trained filly settled nicely in a close fourth position as Aspiration and Tasman led field until the turn. Dumas, who was right behind the front-running duo took charge briefly, but when Alluring Silver arrived from the outside, Dumas and company all looked pedestrian.  Alluring Silver cruised past them all and showed a clean pair of heels as she stretched out fluently to score her second victory following on her debut run on the Mahalaxmi track last season.  Alluring Silver stole the show and the only interest left was for the minor pool bettors. Dreams was the best of the beaten lot ending over five lengths from the impressive winner. Dumas saved place money, but only just as Multistarrer finished on fast to fall short by half a length doing well to force his way to the frame. Multistarrer’s was a good run for a first timer as he covered good ground in the straight and is one to note.

Silver Flames (Leitir Mor – First and only One. Poonawalla Stud) had to dig deep to carve out a narrow victory that culminated in a thrilling finish. Excellent Gold was a shade in front as they turned for home with Silver Flames, Gazino and Intense Stylist crowding up closely. Excellent Gold gave them all a run for the money as he kicked on showing no signs of letting up. Silver Flames, who was expected to zip ahead and go away, didn’t do so as he came under pressure soon on turning for home; jockey Trevor had to go flat out atop the Altaf Hussain trained gelding. Gazino added to the excitement as he came alongside the fighting duo to stake his claim. Right behind was the top weighted Intense Stylist, who was stuck behind horses and had nowhere to go all along the homestretch. The four runners finished in a bunch as Silver Flames eventually managed to get the measure of Excellent Gold close home, with Gazino and Intense Stylist finishing close behind.

Birkin Blower (Midnight Interlude – El Khazneh, Nanoli Stud) powered his way all the way through building on a quick start to clinch his first win in the six furlong Girl From Ipanema Plate Div I - a race for maiden three year olds. The Vishal Gaikwad trainee took off at a nippy pace and led the field to kick on all the way. Market king moved to second and stalked Birkin Blower all the way into the straight. This pair dominated the straight while the others failed to provide any fight. The tussle was restricted to these front runners in the homestretch. Jockey S Zervan riding out furiously while the pressure was on Sandesh atop Market King. The duo fought to the last stride, but Birkin Blower held the edge right through and eventually won by just under a length. Market King was guilty of shifting out more than necessary and in a close call such as this one, may have lost an opportunity to score. Enlightened finished in the money and Decaprio improved to finish in the frame.

Sunderji trained One wish (Arazan – Rhapsidion Snow, Poonawalla Stud) was confidently ridden to a comfortable victory by jockey A Sandesh. Sitting right up with the leader Rising Sun, Sandesh opened throttle soon on turning for home. One Wish responded brilliantly and strode out impressively to draw away from them all. Chancellor, who was racing in third, tried hard but made little impact on One Wish and ended a fair second. Rising Sun held on to finish in the money, while Psse did reasonably well to finish in the frame.

Historian (Phoenix Tower – Dolce Vita, Manjri Stud) picked up his maiden win with a pleasing come-from-behind victory in the last race of the day.  Resolute made all the early running and brought the field into the homestretch. Martini first gave a fight and even headed Resolute for a stride or two, midway in the straight. Historian warmed up and timed his finish well to surge past the fighting duo in front and score a comfortable victory. Resolute rallied to take the runner up berth. Peerless added further woe to Martini with a late dash to pip her for the place money.

For the professionals, trainers Malesh Narredu and SK Sunderji saddled a double each, while jockey Trevor was the pick among the pros to score a treble. Jockey Sandesh had a double as well.
