SURAJ MAINTAINS CLASSIC WINNING STREAK

By Ikram Khan | 25 Dec 2020 | BANGALORE

Trainer Darius Byramji leading Cosmos (Suraj Narredu Up), winner of The Bangalore St. Leger (Gr.2)

Leading pro Suraj Narredu added one more classic to his distinguished list. The champion, who had chalked out three classic victories at three different centres last week guided home the in-form Cosmos to an emphatic win in the St.Leger at home to maintain his classic winning streak. The winner from Darius Byramji's yard garnered the maximum support on the strength of his two straight wins and in line for a hat-trick in the exacting 2800M classic journey, Cosmos needed to stretch every sinew to register a hat-trick. The on-money favourite looked the best in the paddock parade and the moment he streaked ahead of Knight Templar in the coveted event, it was all over bar the shouting. The Madras challenger My Opinion from trainer B Suresh's yard  produced a gallant effort and looked good to upset the applecart of the public choice in the final furlong, but Cosmos in a never-say-die bid gamely held on to register a deserving hat-trick. All credit to Darius for sending out Cosmos in pink of condition, each time he was paraded in the paddock this season and Cosmos made his owner proud on Xmas Day. Well Connected from trainer Padmanabhan's yard did well to finish third ahead of Secretive Force while Knight Templar after setting his own pace in the first half struggled to keep pace and eventually failed to make the frame.

The principal added attraction the Narasimharaja Trophy run over a distaance of 2000 metres saw Royal Crystal from trainer Arjun Manglorkar's yard produce a winning gallop in the final furlong to edge out rankoutsider Peluche close home. The winner piloted in determined fashion by John opened at (9/2) before a good number of his supporters chose to punt big, declaring that the topweight was easily the best performed contestant and Royal Crystal proved them right. Roma Victor from Prasanna Kumar's yard finished a game third ahead of Electra who is certain to earn her corn bill when next saddled.

A facile last start winner, Northern Alliance was one other in the eight-event card who looked outstanding and he confirmed that in the RWITC Cup romping home by more than five lengths. The in-form performer is at the top of his game and is certain to emulate Cosmos when saddled next. Rafa from the stables of Dominic after failing to break level from the gates did well to gain the runner-up spot ahead of Saint Petersburg while Into The Groove after making all the early running managed to stay in the frame.

Earlier Suraj booted home the Satish Narredu schooled Golden Vision to a resounding victory in the lower division of the Mount Joy Plate run over a sprint. The winner was fancied most by the insiders and right connections and Golden Vision justified the confidence of his supporters and the vision of his masters cantering home without extending himself. Bloom Buddy who was expected to give Golden Vision a run for his money found the winner too hot to handle and had to rest content with the runner-up berth.

The Samar Singh schooled Casey surprised most winning the Topmost Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. The winner piloted by Naveen proved too good for his 13 rivals powering home by a widening margin of five lengths. Casey on the strength of this performance is set to provide an encore. Last start winner Sadaqat finished second ahead of the well fancied Hafnium while Zhu Zhu Zest came home fourth.

After a number of disappointing efforts last season Wings Of Desire from trainer Dominic's yard came good in the Kolar Plate run over a sprint. Leading pro Trevor Patel produced a copybook effort on the winner who was fancied sweetly by the stable heads. Venus Bay again finished second and it will not be long before the Azhar Ali ward gets into the winners' circle in the weeks ahead.

The Sulaiman Attaollahi-trained Hokkaido was touted a `moral certainty' in the Bharachukki Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs on the strength of her easy victory in her last essay, but the on-money favourite flopped badly much to the disappointment of all the followers of form finishing a tame third behind the shock winner Poseidon and the consistent Grey Channel. Hokkaido's run was too bad to be true and calls for explanation. But will the stipes and stewards seek an explanation, well your guess is as good as mine.

In the concluding event, the upper division of the Mount Joy Plate, Mystic Eye was slammed down from (2/1) to (85/100) and the Kishan Thomas ward in the hands of Zervan bolted in to the delight of her supporters. Lovely Sierra followed the winner while Griffin saved money in place.
