TREVOR PATEL RECORDS GRAND TREBLE

By Ikram Khan | 06 Mar 2021 | BANGALORE

Trainer Prasanna Kumar Leading Obsidian (A Sandesh Up) Winner of The Topmost Plate

Leading pro Trevor Patel was on top of his game on Saturday. The top gun, who had lost couple of races which he should have won in the last couple of weeks at this premier centre, made no mistake while recording a grand treble, including booting home the second in demand in betting Bellator from trainer Sulaiman Attaollahi’s yard, winner of the plum event, the Dr. C Vittal Memorial Trophy run over a mile.

In the feature event, Trevor astride Bellator chose to follow the two nohopers, Allabouther and  Play Safe for most part of the trip before he pushed Bellator ahead at the distance post and the Sulaiman ward, who had failed in his mission to justify favouritism in his last effort over a seven furlongs trip produced a sparkling gallop in the final furlong to romp home in emphatic fashion. Ansaldo from Prasanna Kumar’s yard, who was fancied most again had to rest content with the runner-up berth, while Livisilla from trainer Padmanabhan’s yard finished third ahead of General Patton.

Earlier, Trevor guided home another Sulaiman ward, The Sovereign Orb who made a winning debut as a four-year-old. The winner competing in the lower division of the Katil Plate hit the front the moment the dozen runners came under the starter’s flag and never let the initiative slip in the seven furlong journey. The on-money favourite In A Breeze from Irfan Ghatala’s yard again failed to enter the winners’ circle, only managing to edge out the topweighted Golden Memory to gain the runner-up berth by the shortest of margins. The Sovereign Orb was seen getting stronger towards the finish and on the strength of this performance is certain to make a mark in the summer season. In a Breeze will breeze in when nourishing odds are offered and certainly not when she is fancied most and miserly quoted on the betting board.

Aceros from Pradeep Annaiah’s yard was strongly fancied to score in the lower division of the Taj Mahal Plate like In A Breeze, but unlike the Irfan ward the Pradeep trainee justified the confidence of his supporters cruising home without being unduly extended by Trevor. Candlelightqueen finished second ahead of Schafenberg, while Mr Humble made the frame despite jockey Surya making no effort to ride him out in the final furlong. It is time the stipes and stewards exercise proper vigil though only two meetings are left before the curtains are drawn for the winter season.

Nerva from Neil Darashah’s yard was tipped strongly to come out on top in the opener run over a sprint, but Florencia from Samar Singh’s yard piloted by apprentice H M Akshay spoilt Nerva’s party edging out the fancied contestant by the shortest of margins. Glorious Days finished third ahead of Barog, while the favourite Shivalik Show from Azhar Ali’s yard failed to figure in the frame.

Obsidian from trainer Prasanna Kumar’s yard looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring and the good looking son of Excellent Art made a smashing debut winning the Top Most Plate in resplendent style. The winner, it is needless to mention is a goodtype of youngster and his progress in summer is certain to evoke maximum interest. Flying Safe the son of Be Safe finished a creditable second ahead of Eternal Blaze and Pefect Empress in that order.

The Arvind Ganapathy schooled Pastiche on the strength of her impressive effort, second behind Desert Rose last week was fancied most in the lower division of the Shivanasamudra Plate run over a sprint and the favourite in the hands of Darshan donkey-licked her 11 rivals to post her maiden win. Arrogance finished second ahead of Raw Gold while Bahurupah came home fourth. Pastiche appears in fine nick and is set to provide an encore if her connections decide to campaign her in the final two meetings.

Arlette, who had let down large following in her last essay again disappointed her supporters failing to justify her top billing in the upper division of the Katil Plate. The Sulaiman ward, who had finished second in his last essay dropped a place this time, finishing a tame third behind the shock winner Flaming Orange from Sharath Kumar’s yard piloted by Saikumar and Papparazi from the stables of Arjun Manglorkar. The winner paid a whopping dividend, Rs 927 on a tenner at the tote window. Rosy Rapunzel promised much at the distance post before finishing fourth while last start winner Smithsonian performed like a dud.

Osiris was one other who floored the punters, reigning supreme in the upper division of the Taj Mahal Plate run over a sprint. The winner in the hands of the experienced apprentice M Naveen edged out Musterion partnered by Darshan and Sea Of Cortez, who was touted a `moral certainty’ by all the insiders and the right connections in the Neil Darashah camp. Apprentice Likith Appu took the speedy customer to the front and held the edge before Osiris and Musterion challenged the leader in the final furlong. Osiris it was who gained the day much to the chagrin of the favourite supporters who had punted big on the Neil ward.
