MY OPINION WINS STAYERS TRIAL STAKES

By Ikram Khan | 21 Jan 2022 | CHENNAI

Trainer B Suresh leading My Opinion (Akshay Kumar Up), winner of the South India Stayers Trial Stakes

After winning the Stayers Cup on the Invitation Cup day at Mumbai, My Opinion confidently piloted again by Akshay Kumar won the South India Stayers Trial Stakes in emphatic fashion and on the first Saturday of March will look forward to win the gruelling test of stamina and speed for the second time at his home centre. Akshay Kumar settled the B Suresh ward nice and easy for most part of the race in the fifth position as the Futnani-trained Angelino set a decent pace all through the backstretch. followed by Make My Way and Avellino, while the two fancied contestants, the even-money favourite My Opinion and the Bengaluru challenger Lake Tahoe.chose to play the waiting game. Angelino kicked well to establish a three-length lead while negotiating the final curve and at this stage Akshay got busy on My Opinion, reminding the public choice of the task ahead and the stout stayer produced a good gallop at the distance post to romp home in resplendent style. Angelino, who did all the front running did well to gain the runner-up berth ahead of Lake Tahoe, while  Pissarro completed the frame. Taking into account that the winner is in good nick, Chennai's mainhope in the Stayer's Cup at Guindy, again  this year will take a lot of beating.

The Deepesh Narredu-trained Storm Breaker on the strength of his impressive victory over a sprint in his last essay garnered the maximum support in the Governor's Trophy run over a sprint. And the public choice smartly piloted by Yash Narredu seized the initiative at the distance post before gallantly pegging back the belated effort of Mzilikazi partnered by top gun Trevor Patel and Night Hunt to register his second straight success. The in-form Storm Breaker, it must be mentioned is in good heart and is set to complete a hat-trick of wins when saddled next.

The Sebastian schooled Emperor Ashoka, who had caught the eye while finishing a satisfactory third behind the goodtype of youngster, Once You Go Black on his debut, produced a much improved effort to come up trumps in the Red Chieftain Plate for three-year-old maidens run over a sprint. The winner piloted by the promising Nikhil Naidu hit the front soin after the field of seven contestants came under the starter's flag and never was under any pressure to stay in front and shed his maiden status. Sporting Spirit from Mandanna's yard finished a creditable second ahead of McKeown-trained Rubirosa, who again failed to justify his top billing after his dismal effort in his first start.

The upper division of the Talk Of The Town Handicap produced a shock result, Wonder Blaze in the hands of the in-form Antony Raj upsetting the applecart of the well-backed favourite Lady Solitaire. The 20 to one shot in the 1000M dash tracked the leader Henrietta before stealing a march in the final furlong to score in convincing fashion. Lady Solitaire piloted by Nakhat Singh finished on strongly at end to take the second spot ahead of Henrietta while Grey Twilight managed to stay in the frame. After the event,  many in the stands were involved in a debate that Nakhat Singh had delayed his final assault and this cost the `Lady' dear, but the fact is that Wonder Blaze on this day was just too good and on the strength of this impressive effort is set to provide an encore when saddled next. The lower division of the event was claimed by the lesser fancied Constant Variable from Adhirajsingh Jodha's yard. Nakhat in this event too was partnering the favourite Prince Of Windor and like Lady Solitaire the `Prince' found Constant Variable too hot to handle.

Despite looking a trifle gross at the paddock, the speedy Karadeniz from lady trainer Rupa's yard was fancied most in the Moon Flower Handicap run over a distance of seven furlongs. The favourite after failing to gain a favourable position at the start improved well to stake his claim when the race came on a boil, but it was clear that the Rupa ward just didn't have anything left in the tank to make a race of it in the final furlong and had to rest content with the fifth spot. It will pay to exploit Karadeniz over sprint trips and once Rupa choses to provide Karadeniz a chance over a sprint, he will perform at a optimum level to enter the winners' circle. Knight In Armour piloted by leading pro Umesh reigned supreme edging out Beethovan in this close contest. Manzoni who finished third caught the eye and is one for the note book.

Umesh earlier enjoyed an arm-chair ride to success in the Wish Upon A Star Handicap. The second in demand at the betting ring, Valeska donkey-licked her seven rivals including the well supported Angel Light who in the hands of apprentice M S Deora failed to even save money in place. Sovereign Power from Robert Foley's yard finished behind the winner and this suggestive effort is enough to follow this chestnut filly in her next attempt. Angel Light lacks initial speed and she will prove a different proposition if her connections chose to campaign her over a minimum of seven furlongs.

The opening event saw the on-money favourite Symphony In Style from Uthaiah's yard edge out Roses In My Dream to the delight of the followers of form. The good start from the punters point of view didn't last long, most lesser fancied runners nailing bold colours to the mast and the punters yet again returning home with a big hole in the pocket.
