Trainer Puttanna did well to exploit the form of temperamental filly Tribal Fantasy in quick time. The speedy daughter of Tecorno held off a spirited challenge by favourite Noble Excellency to lift the Brindavan Gardens Cup (Div.I) which featured Friday’s races. Jockey Prakash put everything into getting Noble Excellency to catch the rank outsider but the filly could do no better than snatch the runner up berth by the skin of her teeth. Perpetuate who has never been a model of consistency, flashed home late to add to the frustration of her supporters. Diffidence, was the best performed in the lower division, and won without much fuss. The trend in the betting ring is what influences the mind of most race goers because Noble Excellency did not deserve support totally at the expense of her rivals, most of whom, were almost of the same capability. Tribal Fantasy was not considered good enough to win as she was totally neglected in the ring despite the filly showing out in the paddock parade and not throwing her wonted tantrums. There was also sudden spurt of support was Clueless Puzzle. Star Qualities, once considered by her trainer Rashid Byramji as a Sprinters Cup material, led the field into the straight before Tribal Fantasy took charge. Though Noble Excellency essayed a strong challenge, the front runner held on comfortably. Perpetuate flashed on strongly but missed the runner up berth by a whisker. Clueless Puzzle was a dismal last. Diffidence looked a cinch especially after his eye-catching second behind Opera Queen. Roda Rosen was the nearest challenger and though the filly had to change course to essay her challenge, she came up with a strong run but the favourite was not going to be caught. Diffidence tends to idle in front, despite which he was getting better at the finish. Grey Hawk led the field into the straight, with Diffidence biding his time and once asked to quicken, the public fancy did not disappoint. Charleston who had to wade through nevertheless finished third ahead of Grey Hawk and Alla Famiglia who both had good forward runs. Jockey Pradeep Chauhan, who was astride Diffidence, had a double for the day as he had earlier guided Magic Touch to a comprehensive victory in the 1600 metres Snow Dew Plate. Magic Touch had run behind Mystical in her last run and was showing out in the workouts but Predominant was more fancied to win mainly because of the success enjoyed by the stable. In the event, Magic Touch was allowed to run at liberal odds and the daughter of Razeen won quite readily from Florican and Predominant who plodded home. Magic Touch would relish longer trips and her progress can be profitably followed at Pune. Highly rated Radiate was running the mile and half Sardar Khan Memorial Plate, a handicap race for horses rated 20 to 25 and she looked too good to miss because she had matched strides with better quality horses in the past. Srinath took Radiate on a start to finish mission and the daughter of Placerville held on without much fuss to win from Sandokan who chased her form the word `go’. My Winning Charm hadn’t run to potential in her last essay and she made amends when winning with comfort in the hands of apprentice T Rahul over strongly fancied Supreme Chieftan. There was inspired support for Pleaser but the favourite unaccountably finished last. Star Hopeful had all along been a poor performer but the magic was performed with the use of blinkers which saw the son of Razeen backed to the exclusion of the rest and win the way a favourite should. Epic who led the field with a long lead, nevertheless held on to finish second and the day she gets a modest set, her turn will come. Yet another horse to sprout wings from the same stable was Starry Sky who put daylight between herself and the rest. It takes some doing for jockeys to give a run to horses of the calibre of Starry Sky!
