TWO GOOD GAMBLES HELP PUNTERS MAKE MOOLAH

By Ikram Khan | 18 Feb 2022 | BANGALORE

Mr Sarosh Mody & trainer S S Attaollahi leading Queen Spirit (P Trevor Up), winner of The Sarb-Kla Plate

It was a day two good gambles paid off and that helped most punters return home, satisfied with the end result of the small six-event card on Friday. The Sharath Kumar camp fancied the topweighted, The Inheritor very strongly in the lower division of the Gaganchukki Plate run over a sprint. The good word doing rounds in the course was that The Inheritor has no opposition worthy of mention and that he is a `moral certainty'. Add to it, The Inheritor looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring and soon punters, big and small went bang-bang in the betting ring confidently backing the Sharath Kumar to the exclusion of his 11 rivals. The overwhelming favourite in the hands of Sai Kumar without raising a sweat justified the confidence of his supporters making it a one-horse race, the moment Sai Kumar cracked the whip on the heavily backed favourite. The winner left the rest for dead winning by a  widening margin of eight lengths. The Inheritor is in great heart and is set to provide an encore. Capri Girl from Prasanna Kumar's yard again finished second ahead of Chiraag while Planetary Joy from trainer Padmanabhan's yard, who was fancied in place on the strength of her suggestive effort in her last essay failed to make an impression in the hands of apprentice jockey Saqlain.

The second gamble brought home the desired result in the upper division of the event. Here trainer Kishan Thomas was sweet on Aztec Queen and it was touted that the `Queen' will bolt home in the hands of top `Knight' Akshay Kumar. Like The Inheritor, Aztec Queen too garnered good support in the betting ring The public choice despite failing to gain a favourable position early on in the sprint event produced  a sprakling gallop when the race came on a boil and soon put the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong, the Kishan Thomas ward donkey-licking her 10 rivals to win in effortless style. Defining Power finished second ahead of the Thousand Words who in his effort to make every post a winning one held on gamely to save place.money.

The Faraz Arshad schooled Measure Of Time on the strength of her first two runs this season in the higher category was a `sitter' in the upper division of the Koyna Plate for horses in the lowest class. The half-money favourite looked as fit as hands can make in the parade ring and that was enough for all the on-money favourite big bettors to go slam-bang and pick up what they considered a `gift' on offer. Measure Of Time to the delight of her connections sealed the issue a furlong from home and that came as no surprise taking into account that the Faraz Arshad ward was head and shoulders above her nine rivals in a race which proved to be a walk in the park . Measure Of Time like the above mentioned two winners is in good nick and is certain to record her second straight success when saddled next.

The lower division of the event saw the M R Singh-trained Je Ne Sais Quoi record a shock victory in the hands of Umesh. The 10 to one shot after racing in mid-division for most part of the seven furlongs trip shot through on the rails to assume command in the final furlong and then powered home to the delight of a few fluke seekers. Capital Gain from Dominic's yard finished second ahead of the second in demand at the betting ring, Sodashi while the favourite By The Book from Neil Darashah's yard failed to even figure in the frame.

In the Hampi Plate run over a mile, the in-form Almanac from trainer Pradeep Annaiah's yard, who has chalked out two wins before finishing third in his last essay was strongly fancied to register his third victory this winter. The favourite piloted by top gun Trevor Patel produced another good effort, but that was just not good enough to stop the 25 to one long shot Aferpi piloted in determined fashion by Surya. The winner from Imtiaz Khan's yard incidentally is also owned by the Aggarwal brothers, Rajan and Gautam, owners of Almanac. The second in demand at the betting ring, Electric Blue from trainer Parvati's yard  finished a tame third ahead of Tyto Alba.

On the strength of her impressive showing in her debut, second behind the talented Ravishing Form from Parvati's yard, Philosophy from Padmanabhan's yard was fancied most to score in the Sarb-Kla Plate, but the on-money favourite performed below par much to the chagrin of  the followers of form, only managing to finish fourth behind Ashwa Magadheera. The seven to one shot Queen Spirit from Sulaiman's yard piloted by Trevor Patel made every post a winning one pegging back the creditable debut performance of the runner-up Eternal Princess from Satish Narredu's yard.
