The nomenclature of Gr.3 Bangalore Summer Million has undergone changes several times because of the sponsors. The race was introduced in the last decade and despite the change in the name of the race, its competitive fervor has never been diluted. Christened Usha Stud Bangalore Summer Million this year, the mile race for three-year olds has attracted a quality field and offers rich prize money thanks to final entry of Mystical and the high number of entries the race originally attracted. The Ganapathy trained Mystical, who won twice during the season in sensational manner giving rise to hopes of being a top-notch classic prospect in winter, towers over the opposition and goes into the race as an overwhelming favourite despite conceding weight to his adversaries. It is a pity that two other late entrants on the scene, Aristotle and Salvatore are not in the fray because their presence would have given this race the tag of a classic if only because of the top quality of the field. However, there are still many top class horses like Fedora, winner of the Gr.1 Poonawalla Breeders’ Multi-Million, the highly rated Hugo and the up and coming filly Risada. The gold and red silks of Deepak Khaitan had dominated this race for the last five years but with the connections deciding to give the race a miss and concentrate on the plums at Mysore through Aristotle, they will have no representative in this year’s race. The son of Alnasr Alwasheek-Mystic Memory, Mystical won his maiden race during the season in a manner that spoke of his undoubted class. He confirmed the good impression he had created by yet another win on Kingfisher Derby day by leaving the field for dead at the top of the straight. The striking acceleration and the ability to sustain it for longer periods is what sets Mystical apart from most of his contemporaries. Though it is too early to rate him alongside Holding Court, there is no doubting his potential. If Mystical treats the present opposition the same way he has done in his earlier outings, then there will be no stopping this MAM Ramaswamy owned three-year old. Unlike his full brother Randsberg, who is hopelessly one-paced, Mystical is more compact and his a good turn of speed should stand him well because he has the breeding to stay. Vinayak trained Fedora who came to Bangalore last month, is in pink of condition as evidenced by her superb mock race. Fedora was full of running despite being held in restraint by Mallesh Narredu. Going by her mock race and the fact that she is already an accomplished performer, Fedora goes into the race with big expectations. The daughter of Diffident out of Chloe’s Delight, Fedora has been kept in fine trim and if the mile long trip does not put a premium on her abilities, she can cause a flutter. Hugo has been rated currently as the best three-year old in his yard by trainer Imtiaz Sait. A son of Greensmith, Hugo won his lead up race quite impressively and the expectations are high. However, this run will put things in prosper perspective; whether he can turn into a classic contender or not. Padmanabhan trained filly Risada is certainly talented. The daughter of Placerville seems to have overcome the problems that plagued her initially. Though she needs to muscle out much more, she has plenty of scope and can blossom into an Oaks performer. After running a noteworthy second to Arturo, she won her next outing in impressive fashion. Since she is favoured by the terms of the race, she should make them run for the money. Wingnaprayer who ran Powerthrust close is another who is also well placed in scales but whether she has the requisite class to make a mark will be known by the way she paces with this set
