Trainer Saddam Iqbal leading Single Malt (A Ashhad Asbar Up), winner of The S Rangarajan Memorial Cup

On a day, punters were shocked and floored in the very first race, the 50 to one rankoutsider Sea Script powering home in the hands of Ramandeep Bal, three favourites including the well-backed public choice Single Malt came good in the plum event, the S Rangarajan Memorial Cup. The winner confidently piloted by Ashhad Asbar, on the strength of his impressive effort behind Star Romance was fancied most and the public rage justified the confidence of his supporters pegging back arch rival Remediesofspring. Ashhad played it smart, hitting the front  the moment the dozen horse field came under the starter's flag and then gallantly held on to help the Saddam Iqbal ward gain the day by the shortest of margins to the delight of the followers of form. Remediesofspring was unlucky failing to get the nod of the `magic eye' in her favour, but it is safe to recommend this bred in the purple to come out on top next time out.

The nohoper Sea Script was not in the picture when the lesser fancied Rwanda from B Suresh's yard piloted by leading pro Umesh and the favourite Ginsburg from Adhirajsingh Jodha's yard partnered by apprentice M S Deora were locked in a ding-dong battle in the run-up to the line. The two calling the shots and matching strides kept their supporters on the edge of their sets before Ramandeep cracked the whip on Sea Script  and the Sebastian ward covered acres of ground to zoom past the two leaders close home. The public choice Ginsburg much to the disappointment of the favourite punters finished second ahead of Rwanda while Air Marshall completed the frame.

After the shock victory which put the punters on the back foot, Palsy Walsy from Govindrajan's yard produced his best in the hands of Peter to help a majority of punters recoup the first race losses. The winner made every post a winning one comfortably snuffing out the challenge of Stern Maiden from Ajith Kumar's yard, who was also fancied strongly to score in the lower division of the Highland Warrior Handicap. Shadow of Love did well to take the third spot ahead of Red Hot Jet and is one for the note book.

. The upper division of the event was claimed by the lesser fancied Pappa Rich from P Krishna's yard. The winner who looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring produced an astounding gallop in the hands of Prashanth Dhebe to score from another long shot Winraise piloted by Ramandeep Bal. Rush More finished third while the favourite Star Fling who was favourably placed at the top of the straight and raised hopes at the distance post ran out of steam in the final furlong and eventually finished in the ruck.

Before his victory on Single Malt in the feature event, Ashhad Asbar booted home the eight to one shot Right Move from the stables of Jagadeeshan in the lower division of the Eye Of The Storm Handicap run over a mile. Turf Beauty and Come Calling appeared to have the best chance alongwith Windermere when the race came on a boil, but the moment Ashhad setalight Right Move, the Jagadeeshan ward produced amazing turn of foot to collar the leader Turf Beauty and prevail in a close finish. Turf Beauty in defeat was not disgraced and lives to fight another day. The same cannot be mentioned in favour of the favourite Come Calling,  who looked one-paced when asked to quicken in the final furlong.

Umesh had it easy on the James McKeown schooled Ganton in the upper division of the Eye Of The Storm handicap run over a mile. The winner despite making his move on the wide outside stormed ahead 300 metres from home and quickly put the race to bed in the final furlong. Ganton is in fine nick and it will pay to follow him again next time out. Sweet Fragrance piloted by Dhebe gained the runner-up berth ahead of the favourite Sonic Dash while Soul Mate completed the frame.

Dhebe astride the well fancied Rays Of Sun in the Shadowfax Handicap run over a distance of seven furlongs met a tartar in Empress Eternal from Robert Foley's yard. The winner in the hands of the talented Nakhat Singh produced a winning gallop in the final furlong to deny the public choice the top place on the podium. The winner it appears is in top shape and is set to provide an encore.

Umesh shared the riding honours with Ashhad Asbar packing punch on the Uthaiah schooled Spirit Of Zion to edge out Wild Passion a `nose' separating the two in a pulse-pounding finish. The winner was strongly fancied and most big bettors chose to punt big on the Uthaiah ward and as luck would have it, it was the big bettors who proved lucky, Spirit Of Zion coming through in a humdinger. Price Striker, stablemate of the winner caught the eye  finishing third without really being extended and if his connections choose to quickly race him again, Price Striker is set to pick up his corn bill.
