By Mahendra Mallya | 13 Mar 2022 | MUMBAI

Mr & Mrs Vijay B Shirke & trainer P Shroff leading Parisian (P S Chouhan Up), winner of The C N Wadia Gold Cup (Gr.2)

Parisian (Champs Elysees – Anywaysmile, Usha Stud) from trainer Pesi Shroff’s yard romped home to a facile victory beating her two rivals without really pushing herself too much. Caprisca hit the front soon on start and jockey PS Chouhan eased Parisian into the second spot holding the mare on a tight rein about five lengths behind the leader, while Truly Epic tailed the field another three lengths away. The pace was way too slow and jockey Chouhan could easily afford 40 winks perhaps every alternate furlong of the 2400 meters race. The timing of the race – 2:45:45 would be among the slowest on the Mahalaxmi turf, at least for this side of the Millennium!

Parisian cut the lead down briskly once they turned for home and then cruised past Caprisca to post her ninth win comfortably. Caprisca, who was beaten comprehensively by Truly Epic just about three weeks ago, foxed his stablemate this time, finishing close to seven lengths ahead while finishing second.

Flying Visit (China Visit – Ooh Aah Camera, Usha Stud) who had last one just over two years ago, did well to take his win tally to eight while clinching the RN Kanga Trophy. Jockey Anthony Raj settled the Imtiaz Sait trainee in third after a quick jump as North Star led the field with Victorious Sermon just ahead on his outside.

On turning for home, Victorious Sermon challenged North Star and after a brief tussle put his neck in front approaching the distance post. Flying Visit warmed up sweetly and picked up speed. Enid Blyton too started making headway, but had a fair leeway to cover. Flying Visit finished on gamely stretching away from them to win comfortably. Enid Blyton did just enough to pip Victorious Sermon for the runner up berth.

Vinesh trained Nothing to Worry (Phoenix Tower – Dixie Evans, Manjri Stud) is making a pattern of winning every alternate race and her five outings read 1-3-1-3-1. Jockey Bhawani Singh settled Nothing To Worry in the second spot behind Sky Fall with Red Merlot close behind. Baby Bazooka was a bit tardy at the start and needed to be kindled by the jockey to move up initially.

Sky Fall was ridden hard to keep his lead as Nothing to Worry started to inch closer and challenge her early in the homestretch. It didn’t take long for Nothing to Worry to snatch the lead and once he did that, he picked up speed and drew away in the final 100 meters to win by a healthy margin of close to three lengths. Monarchy arrived with a good gallop in the final few strides but Sky Fall just managed to hold on to the second spot by a whisker.

Long-shot Ladida (Kingda Ka – Hugoshair, Nanoli Stud) added to her solitary win which was on her debut in December 2020. The Karthik trained mare got past favourite Empower after the first 600 meters and then dictated her own pace. Empower followed about three lengths behind with Chancellor on his tail, while Jubilant Journey was tailed-off last about three lengths behind the field.

Empower and Chancellor caught up with Ladida just before the final turn and three were abreast as they wheeled round the corner. However, Ladida found the extra gear and accelerated fluently in the straight to race ahead and increased her lead to score comfortably. Jubilant Journey warmed up a bit too late, but made enough progress to beat Empower for the second spot.

Pure (Excellent Art – Equine Lover, Villoo’s Greenfield) galloped to his second career victory with a huge margin of over four lengths. Charming Star led the field home with Majorella Blue and Rodrigo alongside, Pure made a quick headway to join the trio past the 400m mark. Jockey NS Parmar urged Pure soon after and the AM Jadhav trained colt bounded forward picking up good speed. Within strides Pure was away from the rest. He won easing up leaving the rest to fight out for the minor placing. Mystical Rose improved positions and managed to pip Majorella Blue for the second place.

Hot favourite Snowfall (Territories – Markabah, Poonawalla Stud) caused no anxious moments while lining up her maiden victory on her second start. She showed high maturity as she trounced the opposition by over five lengths.

Whatsinaname led them early with Snowfall in second initially, before Malachite and Kimoko went past her. Malachite in fact rushed to the lead with Kimiko and Whatsinaname in two, Snowfall settled in fourth with Dragon Lord at the rear.

Malachite had a useful lead at the turn as she was well clear of the rest entering the straight. However, Snowfall, with Akshay Kumar astride, galloped strongly and within strides dashed past them all. She worked up a good pace and once in the lead, she stretched out powerfully proving too good over her rivals. Malachite fell slightly back when Whatsinaname surged ahead of her momentarily, but found her rhythm back and managed to wrest the runner up slot from Whatsinaname on the last stride.

Subhag Singh trained Speculator (Multidimensional – Prolific, Usha Stud) produced a fiery run in the final furlong to score a fighting win in the last race of the day. Fleur Des Lys led them into the straight and was hanging on as Explorer started to draw level. Baku moved up along the rails, but was taking his time to step up the speed. Anoushka was catching up with the front runners along with Speculator, with Zervan up, as they charged towards the winning post. Speculator finished on with a good burst to down Baku by a length. Anoushka did well to take the third spot with Spiritual Rock and Fleur Des Lys finishing together.

Jockey Bhawani Singh was the lone pro to score a double.
