TRUMP STAR GALLOPS TO FACILE VICTORY

By Mahendra Mallya | 17 Mar 2022 | HYDERABAD

Trainer D Netto leading Trump Star (Santosh Raj N R Up), winner of The Big Deal Plate Div-1

The final day’s card looked competitive and the form held good throughout the day with fancied horses winning some at lucrative odds as well. Although Trump Star was offered at double digit odds, he had the form and his win too was not really a shocker. The last day then would go even-Stevens vis-à-vis the tussle between the bettors and bookmakers.

Twelve to one shot Trump Star (Mull of Kintyre – Oceanic Wisdom), from trainer Netto’s stables, showed tear-away speed right from the start. He was followed by Ashwa Brooni, the next in demand after Peaky Blinders and the favourite too was not far from the front runners.

Trump Star, with jockey Santosh Raj astride, increased his lead and was a good 4 lengths clear as they turned for home. Ashwa Brooni could not match up and was struggling to stay in contention. Peaky Blinders raced along the rails, but was not finding his acceleration either. Trump Star by then had amassed an unassailable lead and he cruised home, winning by a good margin of three and half lengths. Peaky Blinders did cut down the margin while finishing second. Just Incredible was the late finisher and improved considerably to finish in the money.

Sequeira trained Super Angel impressed for the second time on the trot scoring a fluent victory this time too. Mark My Word and Rhythm Selection shared the lead as they turned for home with Chuckit close behind. With 400m to go, Chuckit  picked up speed to draw level with the joint leaders. While Mark My Word faded away, Rhythm Selection stayed on. Red Snaper made steady progress along the rails and was making his presence felt. Chuckit was fighting hard and was hanging on to his slender lead. Staridar looked to challenge, but could not sustain; Super Angel started to close in on the bunch in front at a quick rate. She picked up acceleration as jockey Abhay Singh rode her out in a splendid fashion to outpace Chuckit and dash away to score easily. Red Snaper did well to beat Chuckit for the runner up berth.

Netto trained Stag’s Leap (Gusto – Corfu) who was the hot favourite to win on his debut, made ample amends by scoring his memorable maiden win on his second start. It was by no means an easy win as he had to fight off a seasoned colt in London Bell and debutante Juramento.

NRI Angel led them into the straight with London Bell on his outside. Silver Lining weakened soon on turning for home. Deccan Ranger and Stag’s Leap were coming up together. Juramento was still a few lengths behind.

The race came alive approaching the distance post as London Bell snatched the lead and was ridden hard to stay ahead. Stag’s Leap came up strongly and challenged London Bell. China Town started to warm up and Juramento also started to quicken well. London Bell drifted out under pressure taking Stag’s Leap along, which is when China Town and Juramento both shifted lanes and moved inwards. There was a jostle between them and that threw China Town off his stride. Juramento moved up fast and joined the fighting duo of London Bell and Stag’s Leap. These three scrambled towards the winning post and until a stride short, London Bell was ahead, but full marks to jockey Vikrant who got Stag’s Leap to make that terrific last-ditch effort and managed to pip London Bell to snatch a narrow win right on the post. Juramento ran a good third, while China Town was a tad unlucky.

Sequeira trained Kancha (Planetaire – Courtship) also made an impact signing off his season on a winning note. Akshay Kumar astride Kancha was confident right through and waited patiently for the right moment to make his move.

City Cruise held a slender lead along with Malibu until the turn, while Kancha was in fifth on the outside. Malibu tried hard to get past City Cruise but could not find the acceleration. Nugget moved up well to join the duo in front and after a brief tussle, got past them. She had barely taken over when Kancha arrived with a good burst of speed and shot past them all. Kancha looked fluent in his finish and won well by a clear margin of two lengths. Nugget ran well too and was beaten by a better horse on the day. City Cruise held on to finish in the money, while Malibu disappointed.

Ambitious Star (David Livingstone – Phoenix) trained by Satheesh, showed a lot of grit and determination to stay strong under pressure and finally achieve his maiden success on his 14th start. Ambitious Star had missed a couple of chances earlier, but this time he was resolute in his finish.

Leading right from the start, Ambitious Star held the advantage until Blast In Class put up a stiff challenge approaching the distance post. Jockey RS Jodha went all-out pushing his mount vigorously and managed to ward off Blast In class comfortably in the end. Ambitious Star went clear in the final 100 meters to win by two lengths. Blast in class didn’t let the late but strong finish from Quality Warrior make any impact and held on to the second spot. Dream Station arrived with a big run and did well to finish alongside Quality Warrior after having to change course at a crucial stage.

Flying Scotsman (Phoenix Tower – Thread Bare) redeemed his reputation by scoring a pleasing victory and making his mark on his new home turf. After a couple of failures in his earlier runs here, Flying Scotsman peaked late but showed his potential winning comfortably without encountering any challenge.

Pedro Planet led them into the straight with Isra, Sorry Darling and Battle Ready close behind. Flying Scotsman, with jockey Ajinkya astride, arrived with a smooth gallop picking up speed with every stride. He zipped ahead with a furlong and half to go and looked good all the way. Flying Scotsman did need to fire on all cylinders and he won easing up by more than four lengths. Southern Act ran on to take the runner-up slot, while Gurbaz managed to peg back Isra for the place stakes.

Shashikanth trained NRI Millennium (Green Coast – Exclusive Wiley) was the shortest priced favourite on the day and jockey Anthony Raj had to pull something from the reserves to fructify his start to finish mission.

NRI Millennium seemed to be on course to an easy win as he had a handy lead coming into the straight. OK Boss, the closest behind him was not up to it and was getting nowhere close. Just when it seemed he would have it easy, Coming Home started to devour ground and was getting too close for comfort for NRI Millennium. Coming Home even drew almost level with a 100 to go, but NRI Millennium found that extra gear to stretch out in the last part to stay ahead and win by just one length. Coming Home did put a scare on the supporters of the favourite and finished a gallant second. Ok Boss held on to the third spot.

Sally was lively at the business end and won the concluding race of the season with a spirited run in the final 100 meters. Exotic Dancer led them deep into the straight and had favourite Garnet breathing down her neck. Sally with Vikrant in the saddle came with a rush to tackle the two in front effectively. Costello too was right alongside and they were heading for a close finish. However, the Netto trained filly shot ahead with a powerful burst to win by a length and half. Costello ran a good second. Fatuma rallied well from a long way back and she covered considerable ground to snatch the place money from Exotic Dancer, which was a commendable effort.

For the professionals, trainer D Netto saddled a fine treble, while trainer RH Sequeira and jockeys AA Vikrant scored a double each.
