AMRELI SHOCKS FOLLOWERS OF FORM

By Ikram Khan | 19 Mar 2022 | BANGALORE

Mr Rajan Aggarwal and trainer S Padmanabhan leading Amreli (Ranjeet Singh up), winner of The S Rangarajan Memorial Cup

Leading trainer Padmanabhan dropped the biggest bombshell of the week, Amreli from his yard winning the S Rangarajan Memorial Cup in the hands of jockey Ranjeet, who many railbirds including a couple of old hats in the game revealed, are not aware when and where Ranjeet booted home his last winner. But the fact that he did it in style in a plum event on Saturday only confirms that it is the horses who make jockeys and the unfancied Amreli making her debut bolted in with Ranjeet on her back . Top gun Trevor Patel was guiding the fortunes of the strongly supported favourite Empire Of Dreams and Akshay Kumar, darling of the Hyderabad railbirds was astride the lesser fancied Nikolina and the in-form Antony Raj was on top of Archway. But all the top `Knights' had no answer to the amazing turn of foot Amreli displayed and were mere spectators when the goodtype of filly sped past the favourite Empire Of Dreams and powered through to win in emphatic fashion. Roudy piloted by Oliver Richard was seen finishing on well to take the runner-up spot ahead of Appsara while Nikolina completed the frame.

In the next event, the Sirimane Falls Plate run over a sprint, Akshay Kumar astride the Faraz Arshad schooled Thousand Words made it clear that it is not always the horse and that saddle artistry too makes a difference. In his effort to make every post a winning one on the speedy Thousand Words, Akshay approaching the final furlong was challenged by apprentice Rozario astride the Pradeep-trained Anakin. The two locked in a ding-dong battle matched stride for stride before Akshay digging deep into his reserves produced the special effort to help Thousand Words regain the initiative before romping home a deserving winner to the delight of the punters. Anakin and Rozario, in defeat were not disgraced and live to fight another day. Jokshan did well to save money in place finishing ahead of the second in demand at betting ring Cherokee Moon.

In the concluding event, Aircraft from Neil Darashah's yard was fancied most but the topweighted public choice much to the chagrin of his supporters only warmed up after the upper division of the Hindon Plate run over 1100M was in the safe keeping of the four to one shot Domina from Arjun Manglorkar's yard confidently piloted by John. Apprentice Shreyas on the M R Singh schooled Amazonite took off a trifle too early at the top of the straight and expectedly in the final furlong surrendered the lead to Domina, who helped Arjun establish a two point lead over Sulaiman in the race for Champion Trainer's crown.

Earlier, the ;public rage Kensington Court from Irfan Ghatala's yard proved too good in the Catherine Falls Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs, comfortably pegging back the brave effort of Belvedere in the straight. The runner-up it appears is in good nick and it will pay to follow him early in summer.

In A Breeze from Irfan Ghatala's yard garnered the maximum support in the Yagachi Plate run over a mile, but the public choice failed to produce a smooth gallop and in fact posed a few problems to Antony Raj before charging home in the final 50 metres to go down by the shortest of margins to the Neil Darashah schooled Livisilla. Aferpi did well to take the third spot and is one for the note book.

The five to one shot Striking Point in the hands of Darshan donkey-licked the opposition in the lower division of the Hindon Plate. The winner after calling the shots early in his pillar to post effort  detonated his 11 rivals the moment Darshan packed punch on the Lokanath ward, who sent out a strong message that he does not belong to the lowest class. Smile Around finished a game second ahead of Lightning Charlie, while the favourite Impeccable failed to even save money in place.
