THREE ON-MONEY FAVOURITES FLOOR PUNTERS

What a day it turned out to be for punters. Not a single favourite including three on-money favourites, Air Blast, Multifaceted and Royal Glory entered the winners' circle and that effectively resulted in punters walking back home, while the bookmakers were smiling all the way to the bank.

The Pradeep Annaiah-trained Air Blast, who finished second to Tenali on the opening day of the season was backed to the exclusion of his nine rivals in the lower division of the Royal Tern Plate run over a sprint. With leading pro Pradeep Chouhan to guide his fortunes, Air Blast was considered a cinch. But the on-money favourite after gaining a striking position at the top of the straight lacked the gas in the tank to make a race of it and much to the chagrin of all big bettors finished in the ruck. The five to one shot Lauterbrunnen from Narayan Gowda's yard in the hands of Angad seized the initiative when the race came on a boil and quickly put the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong. Speed Seven piloted by another apprentice Likith Appu gained the runner-up berth ahead of the topweighted Ocean Dunes while Gold Gray completed the frame.

Stunned by the below par effort of Air Blast, the big guns in the ring went bang-bang on the Padmanabhan schooled Royal Glory, who had impressed most in her last effort, second behind Artemisignacia, who finished a fine second behind the Juvenile Sprinters' Million winner Ballerina on Saturday. Jumping out from a wide draw (11) Sandesh chose to race the filly on the wide outside, not finding room on the inside. And as bad luck would have it, at the 800M mark, Parmar astride Lady Godiva violently shifted out and bumped Royal Glory which resulted in both riders suffering a fall and Shamaz Shareef on Indian Blues too was unseated. The chaos made the task of Akshay Kumar who had hit the front on Rapidus simple, the winner powering home to the delight of Sulaiman Attaollahi camp. Angel Bliss did well to finish a creditable second ahead of Bruce Almighty, while Geographique, it was clear needed this exercise before she shapes up to earn her cornbill in the weeks ahead.

Two big setbacks didn't deter the big punters from punting big on the Darius Byramji schooled Multifaceted, twice winner of the Sprinters' Cup who was miserly quoted at half-money. On the strength of a couple of top draw performances from the top sprinter, most followers of form including the many old hats in the game were of the view that this will prove to be a walk in the park for the star performer piloted by top gun Trevor Patel. But the overwhelming public choice for more reasons than one failed to produce his best and finished a tame third which floored the punters. This was one knock-out blow the railbirds never could recover from and at the end many were seen tearing the book of form inside out while reluctantly walking back home.

The ten to one shot Enigma from champion trainer Pesi Shroff's yard came up trumps in the hands of Chouhan snuffing out the challenge of Golden Oaks who in his effort to make every post a winning one found Enigma too hot to handle in the final furlong.

Next Lord Vader from Karthik Ganapathy's yard was fancied most in the Fire Haven Plate run over a sprint, but the public choice met a tartar in Star Glory from Satish Narredu's yard, who after a couple of dismal efforts at Udhagamandalam appears to have come into his own, producing a heartwarming effort to resume his winning ways in style. Garamond laboured all through the trip, but gallantly held onto the runner-up berth ahead of the public choice, while General Patton came home fourth.

After the loss of Lightning Flame in the opening event and the strongly fancied Lord Vader, the Ganapathy camp was just not willing to call it a day. Queen Regnant from Aravind Ganapathy's yard garnered maximum support, backed down to (16/10) from (26/10) in the July Plate run over a mile but surprisingly the `Queen' who had caught the eye while finishing a good second behind Star Domination in her last start failed to display her true potential and much to the disappointment of her large following failed to even save money in place. Johnny Bravo from Neil Darashah's yard came out on top, pegging back the last start winner Acaster while Embosom took the third spot.

The Imtiaz Khan schooled Aherne was fancied most in the concluding event, the upper division of the Royal Tern Plate, but it was the in-form Extraordinary from Sharath Kumar's stable who produced another sparkling effort in the hands of Arvind Kumar to seal the deal. Chul Bul Rani in her start to finish attempt held on gamely to finish second ahead of the favourite, while last start winner Divine Blessings found this set a little too tough to make an impression and had to rest content with the fourth spot.
