SUPERNATURAL PROUDLY WEARS BETWAY DERBY SASH

By Ikram Khan | 17 Jul 2022 | BANGALORE

Ms Ameeta Mehra leading Supernatural (P Trevor up), winner of the Betway Bangalore Summer Derby (Gr.1)

After winning the winter Derby on Zuccarelli on Republic Day, champion trainer Pesi Shroff, who is now making classic winning a habit, and the top gun Trevor Patel  again combined successfully to win the summer blue riband in resplendent style. Supernatural in the classic showdown at sundown on Super Sunday galloped home to wear the Betway Derby sash and it was time for song and dance in the Mumbai camp, the first three finishers from the power centre. The winner of the Colts Championship Stakes, Mojito finished third behind Supernatural's stablemate  King's Ransom and the 1-2 finish in the champion event provided Pesi Shroff a big reason to smile, while Ameeta Mehra and the Usha Stud Farm went one better in this classic exercise, the first three bred at the top Indian breeding centre. It was a record of sorts and Ameeta and Usha are consistently raising the bar and that augurs well for Indian racing.

A dozen contestants, nine colts, after Once You Go Black was withdrawn at the gates, and three top fillies came under the starter's flag for the  mile-and-quarter classic journey. The Sulaiman Attaollahi schooled Prague hit the front and in company of Cyrenius from the stables of Padmanabhan set a decent pace all through the backstretch followed by Success from Vijay Singh's yard, while Sandesh astride the favourite Philosophy, winner of the Fillies Trial and Trevor guiding the fortunes of Supernatural played the waiting game. Prague brought the field into view and soon it was a cavalry charge, Success, Mojito and Supernatural pouncing on the leader before the winner assumed command at the distance post and soon put the issue beyond doubt, powering home in resplendent style. King's Ransom finished on fastest at end to peg back the Colts winner Mojito, while Prague did well to hang onto the fourth spot. It was a dream result for Ameeta and the Usha team while Pesi and Trevor it is needless to mention will cherish the moment taking into account that Supernatural in the Colts had performed below par and none of the old hats in the game after that dismal effort gave the Shroff ward a chance in the mega event and that was one big reason, the bookmakers offered (10/1) on the bred in the purple star performer, who apart from a couple of fluke seekers had no takers. While Supernatural produced his best when it mattered most, justifying the confidence and trust of his master, Leonardo and Success from Vijay Singh's yard and the champion filly Philosophy failed to make their presence felt in the big one much to the surprise of the knowledgeable and followers of form.

A delighted Pesi while lauding the exemplary effort of Trevor pointed out that it was a team effort and the 1-2 result provided the icing on the cake. "It is not easy to obtain a 1-2 result in a open classic and I'm happy that all the hard work paid off," said Pesi adding that Supernatural's dismal Colts effort was just one bad day at the office.

After losing out on the Derby eve, punters lost their shirts on D-day, only two favourites, Sucre and Queen Envied, both from Irfan Ghatala's yard coming through in the eight-event card. Sucre made a fantastic debut, winning the Mukul A Sonawala Million in splendid style. The talented son of Sanus Per Aquam from the famed Kunigal Stud Farm displayed stunning turn of foot in his maiden appearance and it is clear that he will be the one to watch in the months ahead. Shamrock did well to finish second ahead of Roudy, while Triple Wish completed the frame.

Queen Envied like his impressive stablemate Sucre proved too good for her nine rivals in the Chivas Trophy run over a distance of seven furlongs. Leading saddle artiste Akshay Kumar after earlier guiding home Sucre again had it easy on Queen Envied who simply put the race to bed the moment she cruised part Monteverdi 300 metres from home. The winner is in fine nick and is set to provide an encore.

The second in demand at the betting ring, Own Legacy from trainer Ganapathy's yard donkey-licked her seven rivals including the well-backed favourite Knotty City in the concluding event, the Indian Pattern Committee Trophy. A confident Trevor spurred by his Derby success took Own Legacy to the front soon after the first furlong and never let the initiative slip driving home the Ganapathy ward to an effortless victory. Je Ne Sais Quoi finished second ahead of Roman Power while Knotty City only manged to complete the frame.

Earlier, the Hyderabad camp pulled a rabbit out of the bag in the BTC Anniversary Cup, Knotty Dancer from the stables of Netto powerfully piloted by Suraj Narredu pegging back the public choice Miracle in convincing fashion. The winner looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring and he readily justified his looks, form and rating producing a classy effort in the quality field. All Attractive in his effort to make every post a winning one hung on gamely to save money in place, while Ascoval in line for a hat-trick found the classy company too hot to handle.

After a series of consistent efforts, Capable who was not knocking but only banging the door entered the winners' enclosure coming up trumps in the Hyderabad Cup run over a distance of nine furlongs. The winner piloted by promising apprentice Vivek produced a sparkling gallop at all-important end to snuff out the challenge of Ruling Goddess close home. Prince Abir finished a creditable third while the two other fancied runners Southern Dynasty and Scribbling Hopper were never in the hunt, the former losing more than five lengths at the start.

The lesser fancied Psychic Warrior in the hands of apprentice jockey Angad made every post a winning one in the opening event, the Mumbai Salver. Automatic did well to gain the runner-up berth ahead of The Sovereign Orb who was backed to the exclusion of his four rivals and was considered a cinch. The public choice performed like a dud after consistently blazing the morning trials.

In the next event, The TAI Trophy Unyielding chalked out her second win this season producing a late dash in the hands of four kilo claimer Saqlain to overhaul the leader Thousand Words. Del Mar raced in patches and deserves another chance.
