TALENTED IMPERIAL POWER IS BACK AT HIS BEST

By Ikram Khan | 23 Jul 2022 | BANGALORE

Trainer Satish Narredu leading Imperial Power (Suraj Narredu up), winner of the Marilingaiah Memorial Trophy

Form played true and most fancied contestants including the three, who landed successful coups helped  most punters recoup a major portion of their losses they suffered during the Derby week-end. Two on-money favourites Queenstown and Imperial Power and an even-money favourite Aguila from trainer Aravind Ganapathy's yard justified their top billing, while Forty Niner, backed down from (2/1) to (16/10), Spectacular gunned down from (17/4), to (13/4)  and Super Kind smashed down from (5/1) to (3/1) provided a reason to smile for all the railbirds.

Twice second from as many starts, the Neil Darashah schooled Queenstown was quoted at a miserly price (45/100) in the S G Madhukar Memorial Trophy, bookmakers too  not willing to take a chance on the Neil Darashah ward knowing that she is head and shoulders above her nine rivals. Leading pro Akshay Kumar, fresh from his sublime effort, four winners on the opening day of the Hyderabad season guiding the fortunes of the public rage didn't really need to raise a sweat to help Queenstown make it third time lucky while shedding her maiden status. Andorra from James McKeown's yard made a satisfactory debut gaining the runner-up berth ahead of Urban Borbon after making all the running till the distance post. Andorra, it is needless to mention will benefit most from this run under her belt and it will pay to follow her when next saddled.

Back after he failed to justify favouritism on the second day of the season, the talented Imperial Power from Satish Narredu's yard provided leading pro Suraj Narredu an arm-chair ride to success in the Marilingaiah Memorial Trophy run over a sprint. The winner who missed out on a couple of major plums is back at his best and soon he will make a mark on the classic scene. Devils Magic after two listless efforts produced his best in the hands of Jagadeesh to gain the runner-up berth ahead of the Chennai raider Kay Star from Anil Kumar's yard, while Michigan Melody completed the frame.

Aguila was one other top fancy who had it easy in the Aboline Plate run over a distance of seven furlongs. The bred in the purple three-year-old filly on the strength of her performance, third behind Tough Cookie was fancied most despite her below par last start and the Aravind ward in the hands of Trevor Patel produced a winning gallop to the delight of the followers of form. Peridot finished second ahead of the topweighted Strength, while Art Power came home fourth.

Forty Niner from trainer Dominic's yard who had finished a creditable third behind the winner La Reina and the runner-up Star Admiral and Tripitaka from Irfan Ghatala's yard who went down fighting to Inyouwebelieve were fancied most in the Abode Of Clouds Trophy, the latter opening at even-money while Forty Niner was offered at (2/1). But soon after the 10 contestants left the paddock, money started pouring in on the Dominic ward and Forty Niner was backed down to (16/10). The well  supported second choice jumped out smartly from the gates and called the shots for most part of the 1100M dash before Akshay got cracking approaching the distance post and Forty Niner soon put the race  to bed. Tripitaka tailed the winner all through the trip and despite Chouhan producing his best failed to match strides with the winner who proved too good on this day. Slainte was another debutant from Mckeown's yard who caught the eye while finishing third ahead of Solid Power.

It was surprising to see Embosom opening favourite ahead of the Padmanabhan-trained Spectacular in the Tudor Jet Plate run over a mile. In her two earlier efforts Spectacular had made a favourable impression though she failed to get into the winners' circle. This time out Padmanabhan chose a four-kilo claimer to guide the fortunes of Spectacular and the result was spectacular to say the least, the winner shooting ahead soon after the 10 contestants came under the starter's flag and romping home by more than 10 lengths in the hands of apprentice Salman Khan. On the strength of this effort, Spectacular should be backed again in her next start too considering the fact that the Padmanabhan ward is now at her brilliant best.

In the concluding event, the upper division of the Sha Tin Plate run over a sprint, Super Kind from Pradeep Annaiah's ward was a medium of a king-sized gamble. The winner piloted by apprentice Salman  Khan who recorded a double was backed down from (5/1) to (3/1) while Speed Seven from Irfan Ghatala's yard was the overwhelming favourite before the price drifted on the favourite the moment the supporters of Super Kind went bang-bang in the ring. After the lesser fancied The Omega Man from Dheeraj's yard partnered by apprentice Siddaraju streaked ahead and raised hopes of the Dheeraj camp, Salman setalight Super Kind and after a brief duel with the The Omega Man, the Pradeep ward forged ahead and put the issue beyond doubt in the final furlong . Jersey Legend ran on to finish second ahead of the The Omega Man, while the public choice Speed Seven only managed to complete the frame.

The Satish Narredu-trained Peyo surprised most in the Karnataka Police Trophy. The 15 to one shot in the hands of Vinod Shinde assumed command at the distance post and then hung on gamely to peg back the belated effort of the favourite Promise Kept piloted by Trevor. Mountain Lion who garnered good support before the start found the first two too hot to handle and had to rest content with the third spot. Last start winner Capable from Sharath Kumar's yard blotted her book failing to make the frame and that is largely due to the fact that the consistent mare was asked to compete against better ranked horses in less than a week after her victory on D-day.

Apprentice Vivek who is enjoying a fine run, fresh from his double at Mysuru on Wednesday booted home the six to one shot Golden Time in the opening event. The Lokanath ward competing in the lower division of the Sha Tin Plate donkey-licked his 11 rivals including the favourite Port Of Beauty who took a lot of good money down the drain. Chain Of Thoughts gained the runner-up berth in suggestive style and is one for the notebook. Perfect Halo only managed to save money in place, while Red Lucifer was never in the hunt.
