MIRRA IS IN THE CLASSIC MOULD

By Ikram Khan | 11 Aug 2022 | BANGALORE

Trainer Arjun Mangalorkar leading Mirra (Akshay Kumar Up), winner of The Bangalore Summer Million (Gr.3)

Top gun Akshay Kumar and champion pro Prasanna Kumar sealed it. The two emerged champions of the summer season, Akshay booting home four winners, while Prasanna recorded a double. Akshay rode like one possessed and the saddle artistry on parade provided an object lesson to the young hopefuls looking to successfully don silks in the months ahead. The champion in a mood to win all opened his account through the Prasanna Kumar schooled My Solitaire in the lower division of the Winslow Stakes, the top fancy romping home to the delight of the railbirds in effortless style.

Astride the consistent Thousand Words in the Kimberley Stakes run over a sprint, Akshay pushed the speedy Faraz Arshad ward to the front and never let the initiative slip, gallantly pegging back the late dash of the second in demand at the betting ring, Tactical Command. De Villiers from Sulaiman Attaollahi's  yard surprisingly garnered the maximum support despite making an appearance after six long months. It is true that De Villiers in the past had successfully matched strides with higher rated horses and the Sulaiman ward had consistently produced a couple of good efforts in the morning trials, but the fact that the topweighted favourite lacked race fitness was clear the moment the Sulaiman ward found it tough to keep pace with his four rivals in the first half of the trip and it was no surprise that the public choice finished down the field.

Faraz who led in Thousand Words pulled off a good gamble in the opening event, Tiger Returns, the new addition to his yard  proving too good in the dozen-horse field competing in  the lower division of the Mughal Garden Stakes run over a sprint. The winner opened (4/1) in the betting ring before the Faraz camp went bang-bang and soon Tiger Returns was the overwhelming favourite. The strongly supported favourite confidently piloted by Nazer-ul-Alam showed a clean pair of heels to his 11 rivals cantering home without really being extended. Blazing Engine who found the `Tiger' too hot to handle finished second ahead of Red Lucifer, while Osibisa completed the frame. Tiger Returns,  it must be mentioned is in good nick and is set to provide an encore.

In line for a treble, Akshay Kumar fancied his chances on the Arjun Manglorkar schooled Mirra in the plum event, the Bangalore Summer Million run over a mile. The bred in the purple filly, who had impressed most while shedding her maiden status in her second effort,, clocking almost the same time recorded by the M K Jadhav schooled Mojito in the Colts Championship Stakes on the classic day was touted as one good bet by most old hats in the game and the racing pundits and the talented youngster produced another top draw effort to power home in resplendent style. Trevor Patel partnering Ravishing Form from Parvati Byramji's yard  hit the front and called the shots for most part of the mile long trip before the favourite produced an amazing turn of foot to collar the leader in the final furlong and put the race to bed in the final 100 yards. Victoria Punch finished a creditable third ahead of Shabelle, while the Rajesh Narredu-trained Polished Girl performed below par, finishing way down the field much to the disappointment of her supporters who had sweetly fancied her to complete a hat-trick of wins.

Back in the next event, the Kanva Stakes run over a distance of six furlongs, Akshay was guiding the fortunes of Aztec Queen who opened at (2/1) before the price quickly drifted on the Kishen Thomas ward, freely available at (4/1), The Inheritor from Sharath Kumar's yard was backed down from (16/10) to (90/100), most big bettors choosing to go big on the in-form contestant piloted by Suraj Narredu. But the favourite again failed to earn his cornbill finishing a tame third behind the winner Aztec Queen powerfully piloted by the champion `Knight'' and the runner-up Golden Vision from Satish Narredu's yard. The Inheritor's loss floored all the big bettors while the Akshay supporters  were jumping with joy with a sizeable amount of pink currency in their bags.

Inexhaustible from Prasanna's yard was fancied most in the Himalaya Stakes, but all he did was take a lot of good money down the drain failing to even save money in place. The overwhelming  favourite much to the chagrin of his supporters failed to make the board and this cost the punters dear. The second in demand at the betting ring, Lady Supremos from Satish Narredu's yard confidently piloted by Rayan Ahmed recorded her second win this season  producing her best when it mattered most to peg back the belated effort of Domina. Silver Swift did well to finish third ahead of Altair and is one for the notebook.

She's All Class from the stables of Imtiaz Khan was backed to the exclusion of her 11 rivals in the concluding event, the upper division of the Mughal Garden Stakes, but the solidly supported public choice despite leading pro Srinath packing punch lacked the gas in the tank to make a race of it in the final furlong and had to rest content with the third spot. The eight to one shot Foveal Vision from Prasanna Kumar's yard piloted by John gained the day edging out Solo Prince while Pastiche from Aravind Ganapathy's yard completed the frame. Phoenix Surprise was fancied most in place in this final event but the moody customer raced in patches and finished in the ruck.

Aravind Ganapathy struck through the third time lucky Star Admiral in the upper division of the Winslow Stakes. The favourite after finishing second in his last two starts went one better while justifying favouritism in the hands of leading pro Srinath. Empire Of Dreams in his bid to make every post a winning one failed in his effort to match strides with the winner in the final furlong. Loch Lomond from James Mckeown' yard  was seen finishing on purposefully at end and on the strength of this performance is certain to enter the winners' circle went saddled next.

The lesser fancied Imperial Blue from Irfan Ghatala's yard packed too many punches for his rivals in the Mussoorie Stakes romping home in the hands of the four kilo claimer Rozario. The favourite Pink Jasmine never got going and finished down the field. Last start winner Divine Ray finished second ahead of Capable . The winner appears to have regained form and fitness and is certain to fill your pockets again next time out.
