KULSUM WINS IN PULSE-POUNDING FINISH

By Ikram Khan | 18 Aug 2022 | BANGALORE

Trainer Irfan Ghatala leading Kulsum (P Trevor Up), winner of The Justice P Medapa Memorial Cup Div-1

It proved to be a very satisfying day for the followers of form, five firm favourites and a couple of well fancied second choices coming through in the competitive eight-event card. The plum event, the upper division of the Justice P Medapa Memorial Cup run over a distance of seven furlongs produced a pulse-pounding finish, the strongly fancied and well backed favourite Kulsum from trainer Irfan Ghatala's yard and  Angel Bliss from the stables of Arjun Manglorkar locked in a ding-dong battle all through the straight before the public choice piloted by leading pro Trevor Patel gained the day by the shortest of margins at the shadow of the winning post. The Neil Darashah schooled Domingo started the favourite in this event having comfortably beaten Kulsum and Angel Bliss in his last essay, but the Neil Darashah ward partnered by Zervan sustained a fracture on the left hind sesamoid during the event and retired even before the race came on a boil. Super Veloce from Azhar Ali's yard caught the eye while finishing a suggestive third ahead of Serdar who also produced a satisfactory effort on his first start after being gelded.

The lower division of the event saw the Padmanabhan-trained Splendido make every post a winning one in the hands of leading `Knight' Sandesh. The winner who had performed below par in his last two starts hit the front soon after the eight contestants came under the starter's flag and never let the initiative slip to the delight of the Padmanabhan camp. The well fancied Siege Courageous from champion trainer Prasanna Kumar's yard raised hopes at the top of the straight, but the moment Splendido kicked clear approaching the distance post it was all over bar the shouting. The Kolkata hopeful Stormwatch again finished third ahead of Bellissimo. The runner-up appears a goodtype of youngster and he will prove to be a different proposition after this debut exercise under his belt.

The Satish Narredu-trained Peyo chalked out his second straight success, winning the Kunigal Stud Stakes with a measure of comfort. Douglas from the stables of Neil Devaney garnered the maximum support on the strength of his impressive performances on the trial track, but the top fancy raced in patches and finished a tame third much to the chagrin of his supporters who had invested big on the Devaney ward. Suraj Narredu astride the winner Peyo produced a copybook effort, tracking the front runner Millbrook for most part of the seven furlongs trip before assuming command at the distance post and romping home a convincing winner.

A smart last start winner, Mark One from trainer M R Singh's yard produced another neat front running effort to register her second successive victory in the hands of four-kilo claimer Saqlain. The winner bolted ahead soon after the start in the upper division of the  Basque Stakes and was never headed, comfortably pegging back the challenge of the second in demand at the betting ring, Divine Blessings and the quietly fancied Perfect Rendition. Apprentice jockey Hasib Alam guiding the fortunes of Perfect Rendition failed in his effort to improve his position early on in the race and that made the task of Saqlain easy at end, Mark One lasting out to score. Perfect Rendition was seen finishing on fastest at end but the bird had flown a furlong from home and the followers of form enjoyed the scene.

The lower division of the event saw the lesser fancied Benediction, another from M R Singh's yard nail bold colours to the mast. The six to one shot piloted by the promising apprentice G Vivek stole a march in the final furlong before gamely snuffing out the belated effort of Striking Point. The sweetly fancied runner-up warmed up late to the task and this allowed Benediction to establish a winning lead which helped him prevail at end. Belvedere finished third, while Sky Princess, who was fancied strongly in place missed the bus.

After Sling Shot from  Lokanath  Gowda's yard  was withdrawn in the opening event, the lower division of the Bold Gesture Stakes run over a distance of seven furlongs, the supporters of The Omega Man from Dheeraj's yard went bang-bang in the ring and soon The Omega Man was the overwhelming favourite in the opener. The well-backed public choice who looked a picture of fitness at the parade ring justified the confidence of his supporters powering through in the hands of Nayak to bring off a successful coup. Fierce Fighter from Faraz Arshad's yard did well to gain the second spot ahead of Sand Castles, while Southernaristocrat completed the frame. The upper division of the event was claimed by Super Ruffian, who proved too good in the hands of John. The Neil Devaney ward is in fine nick and is set to provide an encore.

The Arjun Manglorkar-trained Tranquilo, a smart last start winner and the Padmanabhan schooled La Reina who impressed most while finishing second behind Polished Girl in her last essay topped the betting board before the former was installed favourite in the Quasar Stakes run over a mile. The favourite confidently and cleverly piloted by John shot through an opening on the rails to streak ahead and put the race to bed before La Reina flashed home late on the scene. Sandesh astride the runner-up  failed to judge the pace and this cost La Reina dear, the Padmanabhan ward finishing on purposefully after the race was in the safe keeping of Tranquilo.
