GUTSY TRAFALGAR WINS FINAL PLUM

By Ikram Khan | 19 Aug 2022 | BANGALORE

Mr Marthand Singh Mahindra and trainer James Mckeown leading Trafalgar (S Saqlain up), winner of the Leading Stud Stakes

Form played true on the final day and that helped most railbirds end the summer season on a winning note. The two on-money favourites, Prime Abbess from trainer Padmanabhan's yard and the Satish Narredu schooled Shamrock romped home without a fuss and so did Yukan, Osiris and a couple of well fancied second favourites including the Kolkata raider Trafalgar, winner of the final plum of the season, the Leading Stud Stakes run over a distance of seven furlongs.

On the strength of his impressive performances on the trial track and the fact that he was systematically prepared with the event in view, a good number of punters fancied Trafalgar to come good, pointing out that on sheer class he was head and shoulders above his six rivals and with a four kilo claimer to guide his fortunes he was in with a big shout. The decision of trainer James McKeown to claim an allowance proved decisive and brought home the desired result, the gutsy Trafalgar edging out the public choice The Sovereign Orb, a `head'  separating the two at the wire. All credit to apprentice Saqlain, who displayed good temperament and poise at end to come up trumps in a thriller, taking into account that he was locked in a big battle with the champion `Knight' Akshay Kumar who packed punch and gave nothing away before class sealed the deal, a proud James and Trafalgar standing tall at the victory podium. Another Kolkata hopeful Jake finished a creditable third ahead of Trafalgar's stablemate Apsara Star, while the facile last start winner Psychic Warrior after making all the early running lacked the gas in the tank to successfully negotiate the seven furlong journey.

A smart last start winner, Yukan from the stables of Sulaiman Attaollahi garnered the maximum support in the Leading Owner Stakes run over a sprint. The favourite despite failing to gain a favourable position early on in the race produced an astounding gallop in the final furlong to floor his eight rivals and romp home a deserving winner. Yukan is in fine nick and is set to complete a hat-trick of wins if his connections provide home the opportunity in the Mysore season. The second in demand at the betting ring, Star Glory gained the runner-up berth ahead of the front running Elusive Girl, while the lesser fancied Garamond burst his blood vessel and was out of it even before the race came on a boil.

On the strength of his impressive effort on debut, second behind the talented Sucre on Derby day, Shamrock was touted a `moral certainty' in the Champion Trainer Stakes run over a mile. And the public rage justified the confidence of his supporters powering through in the final furlong to get into the winners' circle in style. Salento from Arjun Manglorkar's yard did well to finish second while Trevalius it was who caught the eye finishing a suggestive third in his debut. Under the care of James, Trevalius appears a good type and it will pay to follow his progress in Chennai. After a couple of satisfactory efforts in the winter season, Triumphant from Sulaiman Attaollahi's yard continued to take a back seat and after dictating the early pace was the first to pack his bags and retire.

Winner in a thriller in his last essay, Prime Abbess had no opposition worthy of mention in the Champion Jockey Stakes and the Padmanabhan ward readily provided leading pro Sandesh an arm-chair ride to success. Sheer Bliss finished second ahead of The Golden Dream who edged out Inexhaustible in the final stride to save money in place. Nazer-Ul-Alam astride Inexhaustible shockingly made no effort to finish third after he was clear in the final furlong and this dismal exercise calls for an explanation.

Osiris was fancied most in the lower division of the World Photography Day Cup and the Sharath Kumar ward registered his second straight victory in style. Arvind Kumar who partnered Osiris in his last start again produced a copy book effort on the winner. The runner-up Kings Speech like Osiris was strongly fancied in place, the Dheeraj camp confidently putting out big money on the most improved contestant and Kings Speech justified their confidence finishing a game second behind the winner. Capri Girl finished third ahead of Embosom who is likely to earn  her cornbill in Mysuru.

John who recorded a double on Thursday added one more to his tally in the final week, booting home the fancied Sunshine Prince in the opener. The winner who had caught the eye while finishing second behind Spectacular was expected to go one better and he did that without working up sweat, comfortably pegging back the challenge of  Eco Friendly and Love.

Despite her dismal effort in her last essay, Winmylove again was fancied strongly to score in the concluding event, the upper division of the World Photography Day Cup but all that the Arjun Manglorkar ward did was produce a better effort which was just not good enough to stop Memoriter from landing a successful coup. The winner was nominated a `good thing' by the Azhar Ali camp and Memoriter in the hands of champion apprentice G Vivek powered home in resplendent style. Aherne pegged back Lycurgus to claim the third spot. The winner appears to be on top of his game and it will pay to follow Memoriter again in Mysore knowing that Azhar is made a habit of pulling out rabbits from the bag.
